    Most Disturbing/Disgusting movie

if he's quoting 'salo', that's probably what he said. there's a lot of forcing young people to eat human feces in that movie.

margo timmins's "la la la la la la la" > lou reed's "la la la la la la la"

i dig the hell out of 'dead elvis', but i don't know if i could objectively call it really good. it's almost entirely laid-back soundscapes & atmospheres and such; some of it ambient, some rock-based, some reggae-based. download "opium shuffle" and "rocco." if you like them, you'll probably like the album. better than "sweet jane" even? i may have to check this out.

really good albums that i almost never listen to all the way through, for one reason or another: the chronic bitches brew check your head 1999 dead elvis (death in vegas) godweensatan hail to the thief (well...not really good, but i always stop listening after "i will") speakerboxxx vespertine i'm starting to think that picking up the nirvana box set was a mistake. if i listen to it for too long, the vocals make me start to feel all strung out. the beatles anthology it is not.

i'm thinking in particular of "something 2 dance 2." it just sounds so...80s. i swear to god dre uses a sample from "supersonic." and a lot of the funky staccato guitar stuff reminds me of early 80s michael jackson. but this is just a sleepy impression from a first listen. 'niggaz' sounds all smooth and fresh and shit.

'gummo', off the top of my head. nothing's scarier than watching a drunk harmony korine hit on a black encephalitic dwarf.

i hung out with a hot girl from chicago last night who recommended the arcade fire to me. i told her i'd check it out when i got the chance. i bought the NWA 'straight outta compton'/'niggaz4life' double cd set tonight. i'm enjoying 'niggaz' way more. production on 'compton' sounded kind of primitive and cheesy, but the sound of 'niggaz' is amazing.

    Preach to me!

you only like one beatles album? you're weird. and get something by the stones. 'sticky fingers' is the best place to start.

i think if i learned all the words, i could do a bad ass "let's go crazy" on karaoke. albums i have at home only on vinyl that i now miss cause i don't have my turntable up here: liz phair - exile in guyville miles davis - kind of blue (actually i had the cd too, but i left it at my best friend's house in illinois) smashing pumpkins - siamese dream peter gabriel - the self-titled melty album prince - batman sndtrk bob dylan - another side of bob dylan, time out of mind i rented the 'ben stiller show' dvd set the other night, and they had one parody called "the grungies", which was a seattle grunge update of the monkees. the sketch stopped being funny after maybe a minute, but their grunge rockstar parodies were spot-on. they had an eddie vedder/chris cornell wannabe, with long thick hair and a goatee who climbed all over the stage; a dave grohl wannabe who never wore a shirt and flailed his hair all over the place; and a kurt cobain wannabe who wore knit sweaters and acted strung out on heroin all the time (which was way more hilarious than it ethically should be--you could never see his face because his head was always down from being so sedated). it's funnier than i've made it sound.

    Sell me on Radiohead.

radiohead has no sense of humor at all. well, almost. i can sense a bit of snide humor in "a wolf at the door." i can't really locate it anywhere, but it feels like it's sort of there.

My bedroom at my new apartment.

i will also be in florida a little while over christmas break, staying with my dad. if spoon, agent, IDRM and i all showed up at the same time at inc's place, i imagine it going something like: inc (opening the door): come on in. spoon (noticing the music in the background): what the hell is this shit? which sets off a 3-day argument between the 5 of us over what music inc should put on. spoon and i are eventually killed in the melee. "push the little daisies" is played at my funeral.

    Sell me on Radiohead.

hmm. this is true. i've pretty much blocked 'pure guava' out of my brain. eh. since the beatles and miles, it's not terribly spectacular anymore to synthesize together a bunch of disparate styles. sure, it's part of what makes any number of bands great, but it doesn't make radiohead BETTER than all the other bands that did this just because they took from more sources. speaking of which, where the hell IS the miles influence in radiohead? can't make a judgment on 'pablo honey', but i do find 'the pod' and 'the mollusk' a lot more fulfilling than 'the bends' and 'ok computer'.

    The Dream Thread

i dreamed a couple nights ago that i went to someone's house where there was a hot woman who thought she was a cat. she started making out with me. then my phone rang and woke me up.
  25. yesterday: 'a very long engagement' holy fuck was this movie frustrating. it's got some moments that are among the best i've seen in any movie this year, but the story constantly derails itself and goes on & on. no flow or momentum at all. i don't think jeunet had any idea what kind of story he was trying to tell.
