    The OaO AoO QnA

will that 23-year-old stripper who had her twat in my face thursday night ever finish school and fulfill her dream of being an interior decorator, or will she become trapped in the sex and drugs and start doing porn for cocaine and end up ODing in the bathroom before she's 30?

    Good Documentaries

if you're starting out, 'roger and me' is probably the way to go. it only lasts 90 minutes, never drags, and once you get past moore's EXTREMELY nerdy and nasal voice it goes down real easy.

this mortal coil - 'it'll end in tears' kangaroo - 7.5 song to the siren - 10 holocaust - 7 fyt - 7 fond affections - 6 the last ray - 6.5 another day - 9 waves become wings - 7 barramundi - 5.5 dreams made flesh - 7 not me - 3 a single wish - 7 almost-perfect example of an album whose song-by-song rating doesn't do it justice. aside from "not me", which is an atrocity with a tone that is COMPLETELY WRONG for the album, the "weaker" tracks on the album blend into each other incredibly well and create a great, unified sense of atmosphere. michael jackson - 'thriller' wanna be startin' somethin' - 8 baby be mine - 5 the girl is mine - 3 thriller - 6 beat it - 8 billie jean - 8 human nature - 7 p.y.t. - 6 the lady in my life - 9

sleeve is in pretty good condition, with that stupid promotional stamp on it. the vinyl itself is flawless; absolutely no flaws whatsoever in the grooves, and it even looks all shiny and new.

'kwaidan' has a REALLY good ethos & style that ties it all together. the pace and atmosphere are uniform throughout, the characters & conflicts are always simple and mythic, and they all do something to reinforce this really unsettling idea that we're just insects at the mercy of gods who don't answer to any higher law. it feels more like an anthology of dreams than horror stories to me (with the BRIGHT colors and the painted sets and what not). this is true. "great photography/crappy content" would've been a better title, cause character/conflict-wise, boy did that movie ever suck. i thought 'gummo' was a much better movie. it horrified me, but at least it wasn't boring.

What's the loudest band you've ever seen live.

i agree. i think it would work especially well for radiohead and sigur ros.

great final lines edition: 1. 'night and fog' 2. 'kwaidan' 3. 'confessions of a dangerous mind' 4. 'happiness' 5. 'jules and jim' ***************************SPOILERS************************* 1. "There are those who look at these ruins as though the monster were dead and buried beneath them. Those who take hope as the image fades, as though there were a cure for the scourge of these camps. Those who pretend this happened only once, in a certain time in a certain place. Those who refuse to look around them, deaf to the endless cry." 2. "I can imagine several possible endings. But none of them would satisfy your imagination. I prefer to let you attempt to decide for yourself the probable consequence of swallowing a soul. The man who swallowed a soul...[trails off]" 3. "I came up with a new game-show idea recently. It's called The Old Game. You got three old guys with loaded guns onstage. They look back at their lives, see who they were, what they accomplished, how close they came to realizing their dreams. The winner is the one who doesn't blow his brains out. He gets a refrigerator." 4. "I came!" 5. "Catherine wanted her ashes to be thrown to the wind, but it was not permitted."

okay, what exactly do you mean by "kurosawa's relative experience with color"? do you mean he didn't know how to use it properly because he didn't make a color film until the 70s? because there's *maybe* 2 directors i can think of off the top of my head who consistenly use color better than he did. basically, there's 2 schools of thought in relation to the use of color: the "realistic" school, and the "technicolor" school. kurosawa is VERY firmly within the technicolor school, as am i: if you're going to use color, USE it. it's a movie: it's not supposed to look like real life, it's supposed to look cinematic. nobody ever complains that the grotesquely baroque lighting in 'citizen kane' is unrealistic, because it looks so fucking cool. 'ran' is supposed to be mythic and primal and larger than life. the acting and makeup in 'ran' certainly don't resemble anything realistic, & a shot of hundreds of soldiers rushing to a battle just wouldn't be the same if the colors were dirty or muted. i honestly cannot conceive of 'ran' being shot without those colors, because they're essential to the basic, mythic strength of the movie.

the non-musicals with musical numbers in them edition: 1. 'magnolia' - "wise up", which needs no explanation. 2. 'pierrot le fou' - no idea what the song would be called, and the song doesn't matter anyway, as it's just belmondo running around making an ass of himself. 3. 'jules & jim' - don't know the name of this song either, but it's set up perfectly with all catherine's suitors there and it sums up everything about the movie in just the right way without being too obvious about it. 4. 'almost famous' - "tiny dancer", moment that comes out of nowhere and just turns into pure joy. 5. 'vivre sa vie' - karina's impromptu dance number that feels really really honest, and comes off exactly as an extremely sad girl with a horrible life trying to forget about everything and cheer herself up for 2 minutes. i'll have to think about that wild card pick.
