    The OAO NBA Playoffs/Finals Thread

this is asinine. neither could the "better" spurs. the fucking LAKERS won more regular season games than the spurs. you don't *barely* escape a six-game series. if you can win four before they can even win *three*, that proves something: namely, that you've been the better team. i don't remember artest being much of a factor in the indiana series anyway. and didn't detroit ANNIHILATE new jersey in that last game, holding jason kidd scoreless for the first time ever? how can you dominate a team so much in a final game and still *barely escape* the wrath of the nets? i guess they *barely escaped* on all those finals wins against the lakers too, beating them by double digits? um...so? when a great PLAYER is on a lesser TEAM, then the player has to create his own shot when everything else breaks down. the great TEAM doesn't have this problem, because it does not break down. the TEAM finds ways to break down the opposition's defense, and expose their weaknesses, so they don't fall apart in the first place. this is the same argument every stupid little los angeles kid made after the finals: "detroit WON? but...but they don't have any stars on their team, they can't do that!" who gives a shit if you don't have a dominant player? it's a fucking TEAM game, not "kobe bryant v. rip hamilton." speaking of which...in game 1, when kobe's defense shut rip hamilton down (who had been far and away their *dominant* scorer, and was easily their MVP up until that point), detroit was not fazed at all because other guys STEPPED UP on the offense when he wasn't getting open looks. yet this article claims that the better team has one player who covers for the rest of the team, while the rest of detroit's team covered for one player. we ARE talking about teams here, right? and this proves...? if they never WON by more than three, there would be a point here, but bad predictions do not somehow magically make a team worse. what does this "on paper" thing mean exactly? is he talking statistics? lack of star players? does it matter?

speaking of which (sort of)... a female friend of mine was going around telling everybody "happy bloomsday!" and when she got to this guy she has a horrible crush on and said "isn't this a cool ass day?" he said "yes, it's the anniversary of the day my father committed suicide."

hemingway would kill faulkner with his bare hands. and faulkner couldn't keep a wife long enough to start beating her.
  4. see above. when all is said and done, i'd like one of these eight good people to explain to me why 'apocalypse now' is a better movie than 'kane'.

Albums that are widely disliked that you enjoy

You know, for someone who considers multiple Greenday and Offspring and Grinspoon albums to be *****, one would think you'd be a bit more judicious with ciriticising people. I can go ahead and ban you if you don't have anything to add here, though... Why threaten to ban somebody for slagging off another's taste in music? What do you think this folders for? I've seen you do it yourself on numerous occasions so its not something you should even threaten to wave your little mod dick over. i think anorak should be banned for taking that post seriously. You know what I hate? Myself. edited for accuracy.

'the war zone'. tim roth's directorial debut, came out in 1999. story of a teenage boy's reaction to what he suspects is incest between his sister and his father. VERY heavy stuff, very disturbing, very affecting. won lots of accolades, one of the best movies of 1999 (which says a lot), but never got a proper wide release.

and he just lit a fire under detroit's ass in doing so. When you're up 3-1 in the NBA Finals, you shouldn't need bulletin-board material. That shiny gold trophy should be motivation enough. my bad. i didn't mean to imply that a fire wasn't already under their asses, just that this dumbass comment will make them play that much harder.

sarah mclachlan's 'fumbling towards ecstasy' isn't too widely respected, and it's in my all-time top 5. michael jackson - 'bad'. apparently most people think of this as downhill and inconsistent, but i think it's better than 'thriller'. ace of base - 'the sign'. i can't help it. catchy as hell. "wheel of fortune" and "happy nation" are just fucking cool.

"the girl i'm dating's" house? can't you just call her a girlfriend like normal people? it's less awkward-sounding.

i don't see how this will work. george is spotty on offense, nobody on the team has proven they can stop chauncey billups, and unless kobe runs around the court like a chicken with its head cut off again, they can't stop hamilton. they have a chance of throwing detroit off with this early in the game, getting into their rhythm IMMEDIATELY to set up a big lead, and hold on to that lead dearly by just trying to outscore them. but that's only for one game.

    Micheal Moore to target

And I probably would since my films wouldn't be about anything that I bitch about all the time and make no effort to fix itself myself. His films mean nothing other than what most people would / should already know. go for it. show me the results.

fear it. LA is just as dangerous as detroit on the road, and i think it's fair to say that anything can still happen.

    Script writing programs

why do you need a program for that? go to the bookstore and find any number of books on scriptwriting. they'll tell you what the format is, use MS word and use caps & margins accordingly. it takes maybe four minutes to learn the intricacies of it, and it's not like it takes a lot of time pressing the tab button more than you would normally press it.

    Actors

i think he gets way too much credit for it, but aside from the deathbed scene his performance is quite good. you CAN see him trying, and sometimes character gets lost in all the moving around & overall weird shit he's doing. but he's obviously having the time of his life, and it's a ton of fun just to watch him let it all hang out and use all that energy.

    Actors

all you crowe nonbelievers need to see 'the insider'. tom cruise is terrible in 'eyes wide shut'. whenever he's supposed to act surprised or perturbed (like the "climactic" scene with sidney lumet), all he does is furrow his brow in this incredibly annoying way and you can just FEEL him trying SO HARD to exude the emotion. it looks fake and shallow. he does the same thing towards the end of 'magnolia' at his father's deathbed. when he starts crying, it doesn't read like a man who doesn't want his father to die, it reads like an actor trying really really hard to make himself cry. but he IS fantastic in 'jerry maguire', with a role that plays to all his strengths and looks effortless. especially the scene when he, renee zellwegger, cuba & his wife are at the restaurant. that little "oh shit, this is how people in love are supposed to act and we don't have it" moment depends COMPLETELY upon his reaction and his body language, and he nails it perfectly with that fake warm smile of vague discomfort and gingerly taking renee's hand. cameron diaz in person annoys the hell out of me and seems like 3/4 of the actresses i knew in high school and college: always "on", way too bubbly & ostentatious, and without any substance.
