i always thought 'ok computer' was pretty overrated. so in light of that, and my ignorance toward the cure & the beach boys, i voted 'grace'.

this is like choosing between my unborn children. i'll get crucified for this, but for now i pick 'loaded'. yes, it's by far the least daring of all their efforts, but the sheer act of such a strange band making a traditional rock record is daring in itself, and it's something they'd never really tried before. works like a beatles album, done in a handful of different styles but with an undercurrent of that pop/rock sensibility to hold it together, and it's the only velvets album where every single song works beautifully; not a single misstep to be found anywhere on it. "new age" and "oh! sweet nuthin'" are among the most moving things they ever recorded.

poppycock. from '89 to '93 disney was probably the most consistently good studio in the states. if you only count their animation dept.
-
from the other disney thread...

Explain what that is all about. see, when barrie (author of the peter pan character) died, he left the peter pan rights to a children's hospital in england. so whenever you make some kind of peter pan product, you pay royalties to the hospital. not too long ago the hospital claimed that disney owed them for...i think royalties for the 'peter pan' sequel or something, but disney refused to pay, claiming they had already paid everything necessary when they made the first peter pan movie.

i'm in a hurry, forgive me if there's any repeats. i'm assuming we're only doing songs with radio/video airplay. the breeders - "cannonball" veruca salt - "seether", "number one blind", "volcano girls" mazzy star - "fade into you", "wild horses" jeff buckley - "the last goodbye nine inch nails - "closer" suzanne vega - "tom's diner" (may be from the 80s, but i remember hearing a it a LOT in the 90s) liz phair - "supernova" stone roses - "love spreads" toad the wet sprocket - "fall down" portishead - "sour times" smashing pumpkins - "cherub rock", "zero", "rocket" ween - "push the little daisies", "voodoo lady" tori amos - "cornflake girl", "god", "caught a lite sneeze", "crucify" bjork - "human behavior", "all is full of love" jane's addiction - "jane says" porno for pyros - "pets" red hot chili peppers - "breaking the girl," "aeroplane," "warped" alice in chains - "i stay away" joan osborne - "st teresa" pj harvey - "down by the water", "man size" the cranberries - "zombie" phish - "down with disease", "sample in a jar" that's all i got for now, more to come i'm sure.

if the raw main event is benoit/hbk, what are they going to do with trips? put him against jericho?

between this, eviscerating their animation department, and refusing to pay 'peter pan' royalties to a children's hospital, this company just gets dumber and dumber.

even more john coltrane: 'first meditations' (i've read it referred to a lot as the spiritual sequel to 'a love supreme' & that sounds about right: more really beautiful, melodic stuff, but more mournful and intense. but yeah, love it. can't wait to get 'meditations' and compare the two.) peter brotzmann octet: 'machine-gun' (holy shit is this thing fucked up. more thoughts later, possibly.)

ornette coleman - 'free jazz'

SPOON! of the choices, i say batman. it's the only retro cartoon i marked out for as a kid and can still appreciate today on its own terms (i.e., story and such, not just "oh i remember that that's awesome!"). i LIKE batman for not having lots of fights, they tried very hard to actually build suspense and create real characters (not just gimmicks) & get you into the choices they make and the situations they're placed in. remarkably well-constructed stuff. i've only seen a couple 'samurai jack' episodes & enjoyed them a lot, but only for the coolness of the animation & how well the action flowed together. i wasn't feeling any of the deeper human drama stuff that batman did so well. there could very well be stuff like that in the series, but i haven't been exposed to it. but raz speaks the truth and the tick owns all.

see, "one love" is the one i have the most problems with. those lyrics just make me cringe. if they'd done the 'mezzanine' approach & made those lyrics really sparse and way back in the mix, so as to just accent the music rather than try to exist down with it, recently burned... coltrane - 'a love supreme' (i have no idea how i lived without this, the sounds of "psalm" in particular just make me salivate) ornette coleman - 'free jazz' (eh...doesn't seem to be my thing, it isn't really striking or abrasive & at the same time doesn't have that melodic flair to tie it together, so i'm finding it kind of boring--but i'll give it some more chances)

austin, if only for the glass breaking. it's always great strategy to start babyface music with something striking & easily recognizable, it's totally pavlovian, but they found THE perfect sound for it in austin's music. about as striking as you can get without being over-the-top, & nicely sums up the characters. and undertaker's early music.

^very nicely said. i quite like the match, but one thing that bothered me about it was the clash in offense. bret's doing the same moves he's always done, and benoit's doing germans & northern lights suplexes, and they have to act like each offense is on equal footing. it teeters on the edge of suspension of disbelief. -
if you want to write seriously, the main advice i would give is write. write, a lot. especially when you don't feel like writing, and especially when it isn't working and you want to give up. don't put it off, don't think about what you're going to write, just write. laziness is your enemy; this shit is hard to do, and it takes a LOT of practice to get good at. make yourself write, don't wait for inspiration. you don't necessarily need to develop a strict daily routine, but it does require discipline. you need to be able to tell yourself "okay, i need to work on ____ scene, i'll go to starbucks and work on it for an hour & a half after dinner," and then go do just that. after a while, it'll come naturally and be like breathing. it isn't even something i think about now, but i remember how hard it was starting out. and don't spend that time writing notes & outlines and shit. notes and outlines and such are fine & can be helpful, but they're dangerous for beginners i think. it's so much easier to write about what you're going to write than it is to actually write it, so there's the danger that you'll start spending all your time on that & create this beautiful little fantasy work of art that never actually gets done. i still have a problem with this, sometimes i'll get lost in all my ideas & write gobs and gobs of notes without getting anywhere.

I want to talk about slash... ...ing your tires that was beyond retarded.

ornette coleman - some weird, truncated 10-minute version of "free jazz" allmusic says the track is supposed to be 37 minutes, anybody know what the deal is with this short version floating around on kazaa?

(too lazy to post pictures) bob dylan - 'new morning' john coltrane - 'a love supreme' (twice) john coltrane - 'ascension' bob dylan - 'blonde on blonde' miles davis - 'miles smiles' miles davis - 'bitches brew' (last disc only) currently listening to neil young, 'sleeps with angels', but i doubt i'll get all the way through it.
-
in the last few weeks i've picked up: bob dylan - 'blonde on blonde' (lost my old copy; and i got the old "nice price" cd, i ain't having none of that expensive remastered shit) bob dylan - 'new morning' (awesome album, it's usually the first thing i listen to everyday when i get up and it just makes you feel good for the rest of the day) bob dylan - 'the basement tapes' (pretty overrated, nothing special) bob dylan - 'highway 61 revisited' (again, lost my old copy; yes, i've been on a dylan kick) nine inch nails - 'the downward spiral' (had owned it on tape since forever, just wanted a cd copy of it) massive attack - 'blue lines' (HUGE disappointment after listening to 'mezzanine', the songwriting is pretty bad & not a whole lot of interesting things going on) john coltrane - 'ascension' (greatgreatGREAT fiery record, and for some reason it goes down easy for me--'meditations' is next on my "to buy" list)

hush. you know nothing of my genius.

Your taste in internet people is questionable. but his taste in movies by internet people is unparalleled.

bret/owen, summerslam 94 hansen/koabashi bret/flair, boston garden iron man match and that's all she wrote. -
gorgeous moment when piper's music hits & flair has this priceless "please god no" look on his face. GREAT booking. i think shawn michaels also had more teased eliminations at that rumble than anyone else ever.
