the CLAIMS themselves don't matter. what matters are the ARGUMENTS: there must be reasons why person X thinks bret/bulldog is 5 stars, what are they? are they better than person Y's reasons for bret/bulldog not being 5 stars? relatively intelligent people argue like this: "i think it was 5 stars because (insert reasons)." "no, it wasn't, because (insert attempt to disprove previous reasons, or another set of reasons coming to the opposite conclusion)." "but (insert more reasons, or replies to previous objections)." you're suggesting they argue like this: "i think it was 5 stars." "why?" "just because. it's only my opinion." "oh." now...i'm not saying people in this thread HAVE been arguing intelligently, but you're saying it's not possible just because "opinions will be different no matter what," and that just isn't true.

i am blown away by the depth and profundity of the responses in this thread. i'll never look at family guy the same way again.

i think inc has issues with living under my shadow. for months he's seen me openly defying the rules of traditional english grammar with my refusal to capitalize, and feels he must outdo me by refusing to use certain punctuation. or maybe it has something to do with alf.

too much blownspotness in the jcup match for me. the ladder match is the only wwf one they really got a proper amount of time for. and it's the best match on my favorite ppv ever. so i'll go with that one.

'repulsion'. borders. twelve dollars. i rule the world. and here's an AIM conversation i recently had with a friend. i think it would fit most closely in 'movies', but i didn't want to devote a thread to it: StatelYes: okay, check this out & tell me if it sounds like something from 'amelie' or a wong kar-wai movie StatelYes: so, amy knows i love miles davis StatelYes: so last night, she goes to walmart & buys a miles davis cd, and listens to it for her entire shift at work this morning other person: Awwww StatelYes: and when i get there, she brings my attention to the fact that miles davis is playing over the speakers, and shows me the cd other person: Awwwwwwww StatelYes: now...this is all probably because she likes miles and i just didn't know before, but if you irrationally refuse to believe that for a minute, isn't it cute? other person: Downright adorable. StatelYes: see, that is my sense of romance StatelYes: i am living in 'chunking express' StatelYes: and it is cool

ok, makes sense to just say that reed deteriorated with age (which he did). i was just wondering if the analogy carried over to "being an early guitar god." there was absolutely nothing special about his guitar playing. it fit the rough-and-ready VU style, but i think that's about all you can say about it. sterling morrison's a different story, and while i don't think he's a guitar god, he was the best pure musician the velvets had, & a very good player in his own right.

you should probably add spoiler tags to that. yup...very intense & disturbing movie, & my favorite action movie ever. Spoiler (Highlight to Read): the dream jon voigt has at the end, with the redneck's hand coming up from out of the lake scared the shit out of me. the first time i saw it was at like 2 a.m. when i was twelve, and i could not sleep because i kept seeing that image. and the final shot of the movie going back to the lake was genius, i kept waiting for the hand to come back out. it did a great overall job of maintaining the tension throughout the movie, even when their lives weren't directly in danger (the missing redneck, having to change their story, etc). the only major flaw i can think of is after burt reynolds kills the first redneck and they have this big overblown discussion about the law & such, and it feels out of place. other than that, i think it's practically perfect in every way. --Was Drew really shot, or was Lewis imagining it? IIRC, it's left unclear. i personally think he was shot, but it's been years since i've seen it. --Was that the other redneck or was that just some guy hunting? who do you mean by "that"? you mean the guy jon voigt put an arrow through? if so, yes: it was the other redneck. for a second voigt thinks he shot the wrong guy, but recognizes him when he pulls the false teeth out of the guy's mouth. --Was the deputy's brother in law one of the two main rednecks? again, it's been years since i've seen it, but i think the answer is yes.

WTF? Agent's one of the coolest guys on the board. but he's very weird. he also said he beat the shit out of some guy once for no reason. speaking of which, AoO: i talked to the chick, she is so down for it. you just have to arrange it. and you have to let me go first.

there's something strange about that statement that i can't put my finger on.

Matchstick Men: Is Nicolas Cage back for good?
godthedog replied to Downhome's topic in Television & Film
some random thoughts: 1) i'll reserve judgment on cage till i see it. ridley scott is not my favorite guy in the world, so i'm not holding my breath. but i'll probably see it. 2) 'leaving las vegas' SUCKED. not to say cage himself wasn't great in it (as was elizabeth shue), but holy shit do i hate that movie. Spoiler (Highlight to Read): 3) how could you NOT get the last act of 'adaptation'? it was unbelievably obvious. kaufman had already dropped enough hints at it earlier in the movie, and it was completely different from the first 2/3. anybody who didn't get it should be put in a dark room and forced to watch 'persona' until their brain collapses on itself. my favorite part of adaptation... kaufman's agent: see that girl? kaufman: yeah? agent: i fucked her in the ass. totally out of nowhere. i said that line for days afterward. -
stephen frears AND audrey tautou? i am so there. and how does she look like catherine zeta jones?

Explain. As for my other reactions to the list... they've all been covered. But really Edwin, I want an explanation. Clapton was absolutely awesome in Cream, and though he's mellowed out with age like many other '60's funkadelic guitarists (RE: Lou Reed), he managed to produce PLENTY of classics even then. He's simply awesome. So you best be ready to back up him being not, biotch. i agree with clapton, but...are you implying that lou reed used to be a great guitarist?

the psychology and the "spotfestness" of the summerslam 95 match are woven pretty tightly together.
-
you could've said the same for austin at wm13.
-
trish doesn't do the spinebuster like austin did it. and i don't like her frankensteiner spot. it's fine if only done as a special occasion when the opportunity arises (like the way angle's top rope belly-to-belly was for a while), but having it in almost every match is just stupid & contrived.

sorry, you will never be as cool as an online catfight between a conservative lesbian and a teenage boy pretending to be her lover.

i think the life-partner gimmick will turn out to be prince paul. and what about the bokken?

i was there for the rumble, but there seemed to be a little something missing from it. maybe it was the crowd, they didn't even really pop for the near-fall after 2 lionsaults. i'll go with vengeance. can't really give any concrete reason why, i just remember enjoying it more; probably because there was a little more at stake and i was really rooting for him to win. there was also a DAMN good little 12-minute match they had on 'raw', with rocky winning on a fluke pin. they need to work together again, they'd probably be able to put together even better matches than before.
