It may sound dumb but is the controller plugged all the way in? Finally, if you've had the controllers for a long time and play a lot then they tend to wear out. I've noticed that my older controller is less responsive than the new one, especially the d-pad.

I've had my PS2 for four years and have never once experienced any problems with it. I don't do any maintenance on it, I just let it sit on the shelf and that's it.
