It's been done and done well before, but not often. I'm thinking of Malaysia and Singapore, mostly. And I disagree that it was inevitable that part of the world would eventually brutalize another part of the world. But that's a deeper argument than I really care to get into.

One this issue I would tend to trust, I dunno, the US National Academy of Sciences & the national science academies of all the G8 nations, the Union of Concerned Scientists, IPCC, etc. more than a scifi writer and his book that has been pretty well ripped to shreds.

Wow. Excellent point. I don't get the "Robitussin-swilling" reference. -

It's wrong that the minimum wage is worth less than it used to be? That many adults have to live off the minimum wage? That Americans want an increase in the minimum wage? That 2/3 of minimum wage earners are adults over 20? Economic Policy Institute, 1998 And I love how you can take a contentious debate and act like you're a national authority on it because you have an econ degree. I know the basic economic effects of a price floor. But conventional wisdom has been turned on its head by by economists such as Card and Krueger within the past decade. I didn't know we had many immigrants from Spain here in the US. Also, I love your detached anthropological study of them. They get to play soccer so they must be happy! Could you chronicle their mating and feeding habits for us? They must feel so lucky to have an enlightened gringo like you grace them with your presence.

http://www.dol.gov/asp/programs/history/re...reports/pay.htm Here's a pretty straightforward, easy to read argument in favor of raising the minimum wage (although it is a little old).

I thought this thread was going to be about the 62nd anniversary of D-Day.

That's bullshit. Maybe it happens in some cases, but do you really think secondary schools, colleges, and universities all over the country are conspiring to inflate the grades of athletes? Whenever one of my students joins the football team, he now has an impetus to do well (to maintain eligibility), coaches breathing down his neck and stopping by the classroom to see how he his doing, plus as a teacher, whenever he is being lazy, I can just say, "What about football?" and he will get right back to work.

Atheists identified as America’s most distrusted minority

That's a pretty good description of what I am, too. I would like to have some sort of faith, but I just don't or can't. -
I don't want to ban any foods for adults, just for kids in public schools who often don't know better. I know I didn't get a good grasp on nutrition and health until pretty late. Also, I think a healther, more fit person is generally more energetic and motivated and probably would do better in school. For example, student athletes tend to do considerably better than non-athletes academically. Of course this also has to do with their having to maintain eligibility.

I think you're underestimating how difficult the citizenship process is, and numbers are limited.

No applicable skills for a real job? I'm allowed to make fun in this case, since I also have a BS in Econ and went to grad school partly to avoid a "real job" I would like to stay in school as long as possible to avoid a real job. Unfortunately, I got a fellowship that is gonna make me work for a year or two or have to pay it back.

Sports drinks are good for people engaging in intense athletic activity. There's a good bit of science behind them. Maybe your point is valid, though, because they're not really all that good for sedentary people. But if you had vigorous PE classes, then it would make sense to have some sports drinks available.
