Per capita income is about $8,000 and I'd say that's highly concentrated, especially given the prevalence of human trafficking and low-wage labor in Saudi. -

Oh I certainly don't think there's a direct correlation nor am I suggesting that the map proves any causation, but it just seems to indicate that if your country is more developed, then it is less likely to be corrupt. Of course, it could be the case that if your country is less corrupt then it is more likely to be developed. But many of the countries that are "light-colored" now were more corrupt at some point in the past, but as they have developed, they have become less so. And, I3K, I wouldn't call Saudi developed. It of course has great oil wealth, but it is politically and socially backward. And to answer your question about the map: -

Every developed country was more corrupt prior to its development. This is a map from Transparency International. The darker the red the more corrupt the country is. Notice that all of the wealthiest countries in the world (US, Canada, W. Europe, Japan, Scandinavia) are not very corrupt. It DOES matter whether corruption begets poverty or poverty begets corruption. If corruption-->poverty then giving aid to Africa is useless, as you have suggested. If poverty-->corruption (which the map would seem to indicate) then we can help countries become less corrupt by helping them develop. As an aside, I agree with you that monies shouldn't be given to corrupt governments. Development could probably be better accomplished through the action of NGOs, Grameen Banks, etc. -

Invader3K, African and black American are not one and the same and the way you used them interchangeably was weird. Anyway, yes, slavery has been over for 150 years, but Jim Crow has only been gone for about 40. Many of the same people who voted for segregationist candidates for President & other offices & opposed integration are still alive and, in some cases, in positions of power. Onto Africa. The European legacy of colonialism was very harmful to Africa. They were basically left with no infrastructure and the Berlin Conference carved up the continent in arbitrary ways that often exacerbated political tensions. Also, keep in mind that many African states did not receive independence until as recently as the 1970s, so they have not been given much time to develop. And you suggest that we should cut off aid to Africa because of corruption. But a lot of the poor governance & other problems that exist in Africa exist because of its recent colonial legacy (for example, colonial favoritism of Hutus in Rwanda is considered to be a major factor leading to the genocide there) There is an ongoing debate in the development community: does corruption-->poverty OR poverty---->corruption Sachs, in his The End of Poverty, makes a strong case for the latter. Precedent for post-colonial development is being set by the Asian "Tiger" economies (who received independence much earlier than Africa) that development is possible. And aid to Africa has not been increasing. Aid fell 48% over the course of the 90s. Hopefully, the G8 strides will prove beneficial. I think that people who want to abandon Africa are "blaming the victim." -
Why don't we all just use the board's ignore feature instead of being bitches and asking for people to get banned? Although, admittedly, when MikeSC posted here it would have been difficult to ignore him because he posted so much and in almost every thread (in CE anyway).

Don't mind if I do... All she did was sit her ass down because she didn't feel like standing no more. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I know you were just joking, but I think this is a common misconception. Parks was a CR activist well before and long after the famous incident. From Aldon Morris's The Origins of the Civil Rights Movement:
