It makes sense I guess, but I could've told you our mistakes and made similar recommendations a couple of years ago. Also, I'm not exactly sure how Sandra Day O'Connor & Vernon Jordan (for example) are Iraq experts. And some of their recommendations were just silly. I can give examples if you want.

Cena is right about the rich hating Chavez...but significant portions of the middle class also oppose him. He has support from the poor, and that's the majority of Venezuelans. I'm not sure if Floyd is right about people being thrown in jail for criticizing Chavez, I would need to see evidence there. He has changed the constitution and took some other steps toward authoritarianism. Also, "look at the poverty rates" (and not linking to them & showing them) or "watch this documentary" are not good argument techniques, guys. I don't know enough about Chavez's economic policy to agree or disagree with Darryl. I do know that high oil prices have been a major boon to Chavez, as he is the President of the world's 5 biggest oil producer. It's tough for me to blame him for that, especially since he is passing that wealth on to make life better for poor residents. Also, he is much better at PR than President Bush.

He's also been in discussions with Admiral Stockdale as a possible running mate.

Chavez is a pompous ass and seems to be becoming increasingly authoritarian. HOWEVER, his opposition, at least during the early years of his presidency, were pretty horrible too (topped off by a Bush-supported coup attempt in '02) & he has at least provided a voice for & some relief for the country's vast population of very poor people. For the record, I am not a Chavez supporter by any means. Apparently crime has become a huge problem in Venezuela (I'm not sure if it was prior to Chavez) especially in Caracas. Despite Jerk's snide remark, Bacon was right that neoliberal reforms have basically been extremely detrimental to several Latin American countries. I think the center-left, more democratic Lula in Brazil is a better example of what the region needs than Chavez. I haven't read a lot about Morales in Bolivia or this new guy that just got elected in Ecuador. With the recent election of Ortega in Nicaragua, Latin America is becoming totally leftist-dominated.
