30. Making the Shining Force series into shitty action RPGs that get crummy reviews and that no one buys. At least if they were making quality SRPGs, they'd have a small, loyal hardcore fanbase, even if the games weren't going to be mainstream successes.

In Canada, Sony raised the price of the 60 gig PS3 to $699 from $650. Fucking brilliance. Sure it's still $7~!~!~! cheaper than it is in the US, but where is the sense in doing that NOW?
-
Yep. I only bought a Wii early so I could trade-in my GameCube before it completely plummeted in value. The PS3 has 2 games coming out in the next 2 months that look better than anything the Wii is getting in the same timeframe (VF5 and Virtua Tennis 3). The rest of the year doesn't look very good for either system. They both have a couple high-end titles slated to come out near the end of the year, but not much else. And It wouldn't surprise me if a couple of those got pushed back. Contrast that to the XBox 360, which has a whole bunch of interesting titles due out in both the short and long-term. Console launches suck.

I hit the ball long, most often when hitting a hard slice backhand. It can also go long if it clips the net. Other than those two scenarios, it doesn't happen a whole lot, if at all.

WON News + Notes, January 22nd Issue

Matt Sydal is an odd choice, considering he has no personality and isn't a very good worker. Well, the latter means nothing, but the former seems like a deal breaker. Then again, what do I know? Ah Meltzer, your match ratings are so nutty but your banter is so entertaining. Hilarious. Bob Backlund is outstanding. -
I was only referring to the ending. Most of the conspiracy wackiness was fine, if not a bit convoluted. That ending FMV with the scenes from New York was just ridiculous, and something I could have lived without. In retrospect, it's clear they never intended to do anything with the ending, because all of the loose ends (and there were a lot of them) were going to be tied up in a future sequel.

Too ambitious is a pretty good description. They had a fairly decent plot going (terrorists/conspiracies), but ended up turning into some social/psychological commentary that wasn't all that interesting or relevant. Did Hideaki Anno have a hand in the MGS2 plot? Hmmmm.. And then you had MGS3, with your basic spy movie plot, and a conclusion that actually had something to do with what had happened during the game. And it ended up being worlds better.

Maybe Japanese gamers are smarter, so they won't buy an expensive system that's lacking in good games? Oh wait, this is the same region where a collection of five tech demos selling for full price, is topping the charts. But seriously, Sony is fucked until they get some good software out, but that is nothing new. It'll be interesting to see how the release of VF5 affects things. I can see it spiking sales for a bit, but after that it'll be back to what it was before. At least until the next big time game is released.

Most wireless routers have wired slots as well. My cheap D-Link has 4 LAN ports for instance. So I've got the wireless going out to my Wii, and eventually a PS3, while I have ethernet cables going to my PC and XBox 360. Very nice.

Greatest WWF Matches of the 90's Poll/Tourney

More like top 30. Sorry, I couldn't resist -
Rave vs. Morishima is a nuttier thought than Homicide vs. Morishima. The problem is that the only 2 men in the company who really match up with Morishima are Joe and Nigel. No one else has the size to be a legitimate opponent, ie one that could beat him. That's why it's so hard to predict the title match. I don't even think having Homicide beat him via screwjob is an option. The only way he should lose that match is getting himself DQ'd, but that seems really unlikely. A draw is the same as a loss, not a believable outcome. Which leaves Morishima winning the title, but it's hard to imagine they end Homicide's reign that soon after he won the title.
-
He's very good. He's not the best heavyweight in the world as Meltzer claims, nor is he a legitimately great worker yet, but he has talent. Given how well Joe did in the Kobashi match, I have no doubt that he could bump around and take a beating from Morishima. Unless they have some communication problems, I would expect a very good match, at least.

vgcharts.org goes on number of sales, not number shipped. As far as I know, the NPD numbers don't count Canada, nor does that article. The "million shipped" was only to the US. vgcharts also uses sources other than the NPD.

Homicide vs. Morishima is bizarre. I can't imagine any scenario where Homicide pins or submits Morishima, so does that mean Morishima wins the title? Or do they have a cheap finish? Very intriguing.

I don't know about the writing per se, but Suikoden V probably had the most well executed plot in any RPG I've played. Just a well-developed, slow burn plot. FFVII's plot is pretty great if you got the whole story. Having the "whole story" as an easily missable optional cutscene was a mistake though. Metal Gear Solid 3's plot was pretty great, even if it was standard spy movie stuff. The presentation made it as good as it was, including the best video game ending ever. Shadow Hearts: Covenant had maybe the best "little" plot twist at the end. The plot as a whole was fairly neat too, even if it wasn't executed as well as some other RPGs.

Greatest WWF Matches of the 90's Poll/Tourney

Bret Hart vs. Mr. Perfect (6/13/93) - This hasn't been mentioned and definitely should be included. Bret Hart vs. British Bulldog (12/17/95) - This has been mentioned once, but generally seems to be overlooked despite being a solid top 5 contender. -
Hahaha. Ahahahahaha. I don't think anyone actually thinks the Wii is just an overclocked GameCube. It's just an exaggeration to show that the Wii isn't a whole lot stronger than than the GameCube, which is why it shouldn't be sold for a whole lot more than a GameCube. Minus the Wiimote/nunchuk combo, the Wii costs $180, $80 more than the GameCube currently retails for. Which is fine for a system that isn't really a huge leap in processing/memory power. Edit - It is a modestly upgraded GameCube, whether you want to believe it is or not. Deal with it and move on.
-
You could also add that Wii Sports is hardly a game, let-alone a $50 game. It's a compilation of what is essentially 5 tech demos. It's ok as a throw-in, but it's not like we're getting Super Mario World here. I think the Wii was right where it should have been. It's an upgraded GameCube (which retails for $100 now) with the Wiimote and nunchuk, which cost $70 together, plus Wii Sports, which would reasonably sell for maybe $10. It's a good deal in that its a $250 system amidst $400 and $500-$600 systems, but it's not a good deal based on what you're actually getting. It's reasonably priced based on what you get.

None of the next-gen systems have a particularly good software library yet, but the XBox 360 at least has some nice looking games due out in the next few months, while the Wii and PS3 have some blockbusters supposedly coming out during the 4th quarter 2007. But if this is your first system, I'd buy a PS3 and use it to play PS2 and PS1 games until some good PS3 games come out. You really can't beat the PS1 + PS2 libraries. -

WoW is certainly the best MMORPG I've played, so if you like the genre, the game is definitely worth playing. -
I try to take into account the big picture I would have preferred they didn't include the BD-ROM, as the negatives outweigh any potential positives. There!
-
Yes, the technology at this point is superfluous for games. And the masses aren't exactly clamoring for a high-def movie format. The BD-ROM in the PS3 was definitely a big blunder and while it might end up coming in handy somewhere down the line, it will always be a blunder in the context of this time-frame.
-
In the long-run, games sell the system, not the hardware, so I don't think Sony producing "something special" would really make a difference. It could bite them in the ass if they think they have to keep producing powerhouse systems, because then the prices could get out of control, which would then start greatly affecting sales. But they're not going to go down the tubes just because they release the "same old same old - now with added processing power~!". They'll go down the tubes if they lose 3rd party support, just like Sega and Nintendo.
-
Increasing the power of the hardware is a natural and logical progression. And quite frankly, it's amazing that the PS3 and XBox 360 cost what they do, considering a PC with enough power to run games with high graphics settings at 1280x720 resolution would likely cost at least $2000. Sony fucked up by sticking the BD-ROM into their system, which drove up the price to a level where people don't want to buy it without any quality software available. It might end up being a good move 3 or 4 years down the road, when DVDs will be outdated in terms of storage space, but it was a terrible short-term move.
-
Sony's same old song and dance is having a bunch of big-time exclusives that sell millions a piece. I really don't see the negatives. Nintendo failed because they were a bunch of jackoffs and pissed off some 3rd party developers, screwed Sony around and then released an out of date, piece of crap system. I can say all of that because it's in the past. The 7th generation of gaming is like, 1 year in, and only 2 months in for 2 of the systems. Hardly enough time to make any sort of reasonable opinion on how things are going to turn out. If people want to make a big deal out of these 2 months and proclaim the PS3's death, I'll direct them to go look at the list of upcoming Wii releases. It's fucking brutal and might be indicative of god-awful 3rd party support and a lack of quality software. But there's no sense if making a big deal of it, because the system has been out for a mere 2 months.
