The reason people are jumping all over it is the price, lets be honest here. Which makes sense I guess, if not for Sony's track record, which I'd think would give them some benefit of the doubt. That people were so easily willing to turn on the company that produced the 2 best gaming systems of all time, and basically saved the gaming world from Nintendo's bullshit, really says a lot about the character of the gaming populace. Maybe people just have short memories, which would also explain why Nintendo's tyranny (which was much, much worse than Sony's arrogance) while they were on top, is so conveniently forgotten these days. Yea, lets go back to the days of Nintendo ruling with an iron fist, things were so much better then.

Mole suggested that Sony use HD-DVD instead of BD. Which doesn't change anything about the price. Suggesting that Sony make the BD-ROM an addon, now that changes things. vgcharts.org They've sold 70,000 less units than the Wii in the last couple of weeks, and that's only 2 markets compared to 3 for the Wii. Oh, but they're not selling at all~!~! If Sony was using HD-DVD rather than BD-ROM, who knows what they'd sell the PS3 for. The suggestion that them using HD-DVD or BD-ROM would make things alright is silly though. They needed to just offer the BD-ROM as an addon so they could sell the system for less.
-
They could have used HD-DVD and how does that exactly change the price? $200 is the estimate on how much the BD-ROM is adding to the PS3 price and XBox 360's HD-DVD addon is..$200. Besides, why would Sony put a rival product in their video system? Blu Ray is a better technology than HD-DVD anyway. Since the last update, PS3 sold 100,000, Wii sold 170,000, and XBox 360 sold 130,00 and that's world-wide. Correction, PS3 is Japan/NA, Wii and XBox 360 is world-wide.

Wario Ware single player beaten, all of the multi player games played and finished. Total time? 3.5 hours or so. If you look up the definition of "game rental", Wario Ware is pictured. It's a fun game and it's worth playing, but god damn is it short.
-
You have to beat Wario Ware singleplayer before you can play multiplayer. Some great decision making sure went into this game. Good thing it apparently only takes ~2 hours to finish.

Well, it IS PWI.

Nintendo Power say 200+ microgames. Cool. I'm probably picking it up tomorrow, with a 2nd Wiimote. I hope it, along with Mario Party 8 are good, because nothing else is really coming out in the near future.
-
How many mini-games do you figure are in the game? Is it like Mario Party where you don't really see a large chunk of the available mini-games during a game? Or are they so few where you see most of them in one play-through?

Starting to watch a lot of wrestling again, and I whipped up a couple of reviews. Chigusa Nagayo vs. Devil Masami (8/22/85) This was pro-wrestling in its purest form. It wasn't about good vs. evil or trying to avoid or hit a specific move. It was about two competitors trying to win a wrestling match. And both Chigusa and Devil really, really wanted to win. Everything was fought for, nothing was given. Every early mat-hold was contested. Chigusa got the short end of the stick early on, but she never stopped trying to fight her way out of Devil's holds. And why wouldn't she, the holds hurt right? They sure looked like it, as both girls did a phenomenal job putting over the damage of the early mat-work, with excellent facials and clear body language. In some matches, the early mat-work seems to be given a passing thought. Not here, where it seemed like life or death from the very start. The struggle and competitiveness extended itself to the rest of the match. Suplexes and slams were fought for and against. It makes sense, but it also made for great timing, which is something missing from a lot of matches today. It makes such a large difference when the wrestlers fight for moves instead of just hitting them right away. It builds anticipation for the move and makes them that much more important. Maybe the best example of this was Chigusa's late match cross-armed german suplex. Chigusa slowly hooked it in while Devil frantically tried to struggle out of it, to no avail. When the move was hit, it made for an excellent near fall, one that the crowd bought into as the finish. Most all of the big moves in this match were timed and fought for well, which added to the drama, and put the moves over to the audience. While the main reasons this match was so great are covered above, there were a few other things that stand out, good and bad. Devil's absolutely devastating punches for one. These were some big league knocks Chigusa was taking, I can't remember the last women's match I'd seen with such great punches. The selling was just fantastic, most notably the late match selling which put over how much sheer energy each girl had used up. This was one of the big reasons the match came off as epic as it did. On the negative side, I wasn't crazy about the late match structure and transitioning, as it seemed like a few of the transitions came at perplexing moments. For example, a couple times it seemed like Chigusa or Devil would get hit with a move for a near fall, and then almost right after, transition into control without any reversal or comeback made. It didn't happen often, but was just a small annoyance late in the match. Finally, the double KO finish made sense, because the match had really been quite even. Devil got the better of it early, Chigusa eventually fought back to somewhat equal footing, and they each took their fair share of bombs late in the match. Some things might have been done to add a little more drama to the finish, because I don't feel it got over as well as it could have, but it was definitely the right finish for the match. I really liked this match. The "competitive" style of pro-wrestling is absolutely my favourite style. I'll take two wrestlers going at it in a rough, hard-fought wrestling match over a more theatrical approach any day. This match was basically that, and in that context, was performed almost as well as I could expect. ****1/2 Homicide vs. Bryan Danielson (6/3/06) This was the Homicide show, as he really stole the spotlight in the match. Early portions were fairly pedestrian, until they go out to the floor and brawl around a bit, while Danielson starts going to town on Homicide's shoulder. Homicide really shines in his role as the face, as his selling of the arm is top notch and natural (unlike some other ROH workers whose selling is rather unnatural). Things eventually build to both men missing moves from the top, which really made things interesting for the last few minutes, as it was back and forth after that. Danielson is working his heel schtick pretty good, even in the later portions of the match. For example when both guys are slugging each other and really getting the crowd going, Danielson goes for the eyes as he's losing the striking match, which got a great reaction due to the timing. Unfortunately, Danielson's timing on some of his late match moves isn't strong, as he blows off some previous offense and goes through a dragon suplex like nothing, without bothering to milk it for heat or dramatic effect. Best near-fall of the match was Homicide's frog splash, which he hit after fighting off a Danielson superplex attempt. A good example of getting a hot near-fall out of a counter. Finish wasn't great, mostly because the Danielson elbows didn't look particularly effective, and a ref stoppage should really warrant some nasty looking punishment. The booking of it was fine, because it kept Homicide strong, it just wasn't performed well. The match was still rather good, and makes me look forward to their rematch. ***1/2

I finally turned on my Wii again, and added most everyone. Here's hoping it comes in useful one of these days

I wonder how many people really will make a big deal out of that?

Andrew, I was directing my (sarcastic) comment at the intellectual juggernaut who posted those comments But yea, Gran Turismo 3 is like the 11th best selling game OF ALL TIME (GT1 is 19th, GT2 is 24th, GT4 aka GTA3v.2 is 29th). It'd also be pretty hard to argue that it wasn't an utterly fantastic game, but I'm sure that moron will come up with something. OVERHYPED! IRRELEVANT GAME~!~! I'd imagine it's just a troll job though. Maybe I'm naive, but I'd hate to think that someone could be that clueless.

Most amateur reviews suck horribly, but talking about the graphics and sound is perfectly reasonable. Gameplay is obviously #1, but any objective review (ie. good review) should attempt to critique every aspect of the game. Although I do agree that not much really needs to be said about the sound and graphics, but it definitely should be there, -
Yea that Gran Turismo isn't any good. The act is tired and lame, give it up.

It's kind of scary to think that Gabe Newell runs a major game studio/publisher. It's not really expensive, considering how much high-end computer components cost. What bugs me is that Sony could have sold the PS3 for $400 if they'd just gone with a regular DVD-ROM rather than sticking the BD-ROM in there.

A $600 price tag seems to have made many people forget the last generation of game consoles

My PS1 from 1997 still works, as does my PS2 from 2001. My NES broke after 4 years. My SNES was done after 5. The aforementioned GameCube lasted 20 months. Of course, it's nothing worth arguing over because the only thing anyone has to go own is their own experience (1 out of millions) or anecdotal evidence (dubious credibility and a still not indicative of the big picture). Shit randomly breaks.
-
Clearly the PS2 really only sold 50 million, because everyone who bought one had it break on them and had to get a new one. Except me, mine has been good since 2001. So they sold 50 million legit, and 49,999,999 in replacements. The Gamecube sold a legit 12 million in the US, it never broke. Well, except mine, which crapped out after 2 years. So they really only sold 11,999,999 legit. I love online message boards.

Single layer BDs are 25 gigabytes. Dual layer is 50. The point is that with how much more dual layered media costs, it stands to be reason that triple layered will cost an obscene amount. So triple layered HD-DVDs being 1 gigabyte larger than dual layered BDs doesn't really mean much. Theoretically, they could develop triple layer BDs that hold 75 gigs, but with how much it would likely cost, there's not much point.

Right, the PS3 numbers are even more impressive than the gap between the 360 would suggest, since the PS3 came out with direct competition from the Wii launch, and with the 360 already having a foothold. Certainly doesn't tell the story of a failure. Anything could happen in the next few months, but proclaiming the PS3 to be a failure because a few stores have a bunch of PS3s in-stock seems a bit premature. The January sales numbers will tell the story, good or bad.
-
The problem with that is dual layered media has always been priced extremely high, relative to regular single layer media. DVD-R DL for example, is about 10x the cost of DVD-R ($0.20 vs. $2.00 or so). I'd hate to think about how much triple layered HD-DVDs will run.

http://www.vgcharts.org/usaconscomps.php?n...=PS3&type=2 http://www.vgcharts.org/usaconscomps.php?n...=PS3&type=0 The 360 sold more in the 1st month, probably due to the utter lack of PS3s available, but month 2 belongs to the PS3, more than enough to make up the difference from month 1.

How much does blank BR media cost compared to HD-DVD? BR has more space, so if they're about the same, HD-DVD can fuck off. A 10 gig difference in storage space is huge for someone who wants to use the discs for purposes other than HD-video. Blu Ray also has a higher theoretical maximum transfer rate. It sounds like BR is the better technology, but it'll come down to price. Edit - Heh, BD-r media costs between $15 and $20 and I can't find HD-DVD-R prices. Unless HD-DVD-R is $10 or less, I know which format I'm going with.

That's funny, considering the PS3 is actually ahead of the 360's pace at this point. Even if it wasn't, that prediction is still rather nutty and completely underestimates the power of some of Sony's exclusive titles. There's too much overreaction going on, when not enough time has passed. The system has been out for two months. Go look at the Wii's incredibly shitty list of upcoming releases, almost devoid of quantity AND quality. But the system's been out for two months, so it makes no sense to be getting hysterical about how the Wii has no 3rd party support and is doomed to failure. The same applies to the PS3, not only because of how much time has passed, but also due to the aforementioned fact that it's curretly ahead of the 360's pace, and the 360 certainly turned out alright.
