Ok, I'll play that 60 hour game and write a review just for you

I guess I missed that. Well, considering you haven't played it (surprise, surprise) I think I'll pass on that review. I'll just say it's the sort of RPG that isn't for casuals, due to it's pacing and heavy plot and character development. Of course, I tend not to let what the masses think impact my own viewpoint, since so many people have no idea what objectivity is.

I played both when I was a kid, and thought SML2 was miles better than SML. SML just didn't seem right. I ended up playing SML through once, while I played SML2 religiously.

Deus Ex 2 averaged an 8.3 from media reviews, and mostly got 8's and 9's from the "good" sources. The only reason the game had any negative stigma was 1) because it had technical problems on release, including an awful setting that was on by default which made the game annoying to play, and 2) it wasn't as good as the original. Once the problems were fixed (which was done via patch, but was easily fixable by the player beforehand) and people realized it wasn't going to be as good as the original, it was a very good game. To put it into perspective, Deus Ex 2 was better than Halo in every significant aspect. By a wide margin. VF4:E was indeed an upgrade, but they almost totally changed the main gameplay mode along with the tweaked fighting system. It ended up taking the best fighting game of all time and widening the gap a little more, but I thought the single player mode was significant enough for the game to have its own identity. GTA:VC was basically more of the same from GTA3, but it was still a good game. I'd call it Zelda's TP to Zelda's OoT

I'd call 2003 better, just based on the high-end games being better than most of what came out this year. 2003 had Wind Waker, FFX-2, FFTA, VF4:E, KOTOR, GGXX, SC2, GTA:VC, Mario Kart:DD, SimCity 4, Deus Ex 2 and Mario Golf:TT. I'll take the first 4 over anything from 2006, outside of Suikoden 5. I don't see the depth of high-end games this year, even though there may be a greater depth of "good" or "very good" games. When given the choice, I prefer absolute high-end depth over anything.

Yes, I know. The point was that based on game quality, PC gaming in 2006 wasn't in such a huge rut that only two worthwhile games were produced this year. It was more like there were only two (maybe a couple more) that actually deserved some sort of GOTY recognition, along with a slew of games that were slightly below that level. Which would make it quite similar to console games this year.

I probably could have come up with other games if the standards were as low as they were for the console list. It hasn't been a good year in general, seeing as how there were only two games I would actually give a GOTY type score to. Also, I forgot to nominate the real GOTY, just because I thought it was released in 2005. Suikoden 5 smoked TP and FFXII and deserves it more than MGS3S just for not being a re-release.

The co-op is almost identical to the single player. It's better in that you get a good partner as opposed to having the AI play the secondary character, but they way they did the split-screen was awful (horizontal split and not vertical? wtf?). I played the co-op first and have no desire to play it again by myself. I would wager that the situation would flip-flopped if I had played the single first.

Looks like the PS3 comes with a 2x drive, not too bad I guess. It's still rather wasteful at this point. What game requires more than say, 2 DVD-R DL discs? Even in 5 years, you can always throw games on 3 or 4 discs. Of course, Sony did this just to get their tech into people's homes. They clearly didn't care about the practicality of it.

1x Blu-Ray is equivalent to just over 3x DVD. 2x Blu Ray would be between a 6x and 8x DVD drive. The drives are slower now, but eventually will be a lot faster. But who knows when that will be, and I seriously doubt Sony will ever put anything more than a 2x drive in the PS3.

It feels like a cop-out, but I picked Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence. Nothing else this year has been at an elite level. TP and FFXII were at similar levels, but neither were great. Disgaea 2 was a really good game as well, but like TP, doesn't get the nod because it doesn't do a whole lot different than it's predecessor. Gears of War was the biggest disappointment of the year by far. The game has no replay value, and takes 8-10 hours to finish. Bad combination there. It's a shame, because the gameplay was great. So yea, MGS3S, even though it wasn't a whole lot better than the original. It was basically the greatness of the original game plus some extras. If anything else was truly great this year, I wouldn't have voted for it. But what are you gonna do?

TSM Forums Game of the Year Nominations

Oblivion and Company of Heroes are about the only good nominations for PC. I would add Disgaea 2 and Valkyrie Profile 2 to the console nominations. They're not super strong titles, but it's not like it's been a particularly strong year. Oh, and Metal Gear Solid 3 Subsistence, even though it was just the original with some new content added. Come to think of it, I'd probably pick that for game of the year anyway.

Yumiko Hotta did the pyramid driver (cross-armed Liger bomb). Bull Nakano was pretty awesome back in the day. Definitely one of the top 5 women's wrestlers I've ever seen.

It is kind of funny and perplexing. They can shell out $500 for a console, but not $200 for a cheap CRT that supports composite and possibly component?

    The Next Big Wrestling Move?

I haven't heard this term before, is that like a cross-armed german suplex? Manami Toyota used that, along with about a hundred other suplex variations.

    The Next Big Wrestling Move?

That was an axe guillotine driver or beach break. The former is what Takao Omori calls it, the latter is what Genki Horiguchi calls it. I bet some woman was doing it in the early 90's too, as is the case with many "cool, modern" moves

Dead Rising's sold like, 35,000 copies in Japan. Looking at vgcharts.org, it would appear that no American console game has sold over a million copies in Japan. I think it's simply a matter of American developers either not making the games or not making quality games, in the genres that do well in Japan.

    James Bond DVD Boxsets

I thought George Lazenby would have been perfect for the early Moore-era movies, as he did comedy the best out of the 4 Bonds I've seen, and those movies seem less serious and more comedic than some of the earlier efforts. Kind of a shame he didn't continue on in the series. What's the story on why he was only in there for the 1 film?

    Rocky VI Officially Greenlit

Part of the problem with Mason Dixon's character is that he was played by Antonio Tarver. Not only was he not a very good actor (which is why they limited his lines I would assume), but he's also a light heavyweight boxer trying to play a dominant heavyweight champion. He didn't look impressive, he didn't sound impressive and he didn't fight impressively. It didn't work. The first half of the movie was really good, especially the Paulie-related stuff. The rest was ragingly mediocre, mostly because it was incredibly rushed and poorly developed. Also, the circumstances surrounding the fight were ridiculous. Of course, Rocky IV and V were ridiculous too, but those movies also sucked. Rocky Balboa didn't suck, but it wasn't even sniffing Rocky, or even Rocky II.

You just need an HD capable TV, ie. a TV that can display the HD resolutions. Getting the HDTV service has nothing to do with video games or DVDs.
