How boxing can regain it's popularity

I dunno, it was just meant to be stupid and goofy, not serious. Anywyas, the last time I remember a really high profile fight that I heard everyone talking about was Tyson vs Lewis, and even that ended up being a major dissapointment. Unfortunatly, all the really well known names in boxing are either retired, (Lennox Lewis, George Foreman) or washed up (Mike Tyson, Evander Holyfield). What should have happened was that back when Boxing did have well known fighters that were active, they should have used them as a draw, while trying to establish new guys on the Undercard, but instead they would take every new up and comer and feed them to Tyson or Lewis who would destroy them in three rounds or less. It's not terribly unlike Wrestling really.
  2. I've always seen it as a 60 minute showcase of restholds being used to transition from one spot to another, and not continuously so either.

How boxing can regain it's popularity

Yeah, if we're gonna get into a serious discussion on how to save boxing, then that's exactly it. They need to unify the titles and have one governing body. There's like what now, twelve different belts now with even more divisions? Also, get Boxing back on Television. The end of Tuesday Night Fights on USA was a pretty heavy blow to the sport, that was all their mainstream coverage right there. Showcase some of your up and comers on the Cable shows, have them fight legitimate opponents on the Premium Channel shows, and save guys like Mike Tyson for the Pay Per Views.
  4. Are you talking about the angle prior to King of the Ring 1994 where Jerry Lawler claimed he was going to have Roddy Piper on the Kings Court, but brought out some younger kid instead? I think Lawler was gonna piledrive him or something, but then Piper did the run in at the end to save him.

I just dig chicks that swallow. It has nothing to do with it being demeaning or what not, I just think it's hot.

    Old WCW video covers....

I do believe New Blood RIsing was the last WCW event to get released on Home Video, anything you find past that would either be custom art, or the original advertising flyer.

  8. You're thinking of All American. The match was the Headshrinkers vs. the Quebecars on "The Countdown to the Crowning" special prior to KOTR 94. Yeah, you're right, after a while all this stuff just kind of runs together.
  9. WWF Spotlight was another one that was syndicated to a limited number of markets. By the end, it was hosted by Johnny Polo and Gorilla Monsoon. I remember they even ran an angle on the show before WM X, where Polo bet Monsoon that if THe Quebecers lost, he would shave off his goatee, and Monsoon did end up making him get it shaved off.

    Fact or a myth?

I think it was more along the lines of Bret Hart was sick and injured, and had to take some time off, and The Mountie just happened to be lucky enough to be wrestling him that night, so he got the belt. I don't see why he would have wanted to jump to WCW, he was in the middle of a pretty good push, and it's not like there was a whole heck of a lot of oppertunity for him there at the time. *edit* Ok, further investigation seems to show that he did try and ditch for WCW,but he misinterpreted his contract. That still doesn't sound right though, wouldn't Vince have just buried him if he really did attempt such a thing?
  11. I don't believe so. Traditionally the Saturday show was Superstars which was syndicated from 1984 to 1996 before being switched over to an entirely recap show format and stuck on Sunday Mornigns on USA. In most markets it aired on whatever local independent station was in the area, back before all the independent stations were bught out by FOX, UPN, or WB, usually around 11am or noon time. I know here we got Superstars on Saturday morning at 10am, followed by WCW Worldwide at 11am, and then WMAC Masters along with other American Gladiators rip-offs and Ron Popeil Informercials.

    Fact or a myth?

Are the rumors of Pat Patterson / Brooklyn Brawler's gay relationship true? How about Mae Young / Moolah?
  13. As we all know, the last time Nikolai Volkoff was seen in the WWF, Todd Pettingil found him homeless, sleeping on the streets of New York. Any chance they'll have him show up at the HOF in tatterd clothing and continue his homeless gimmick? I mean what else is he gonna talk about in regards to his WWF run? Jobbing to everybody on the roster? Sure, he was somewhat of a bigger name in the late 60's and 70's, but even today, the guy is rememberd as little more then a punchline to a couple of jokes, so why not just capitalize on that?

    Fact or a myth?

That's crazy, military training includes martial arts, and Waltman's pretty scrawny, so one on one I'd believe a Marine could take him. Bulldog may be able to handle himself, but one on seven (subtracting one to deal with Waltman), no way. THe version of the story I heard were that all three guys, Shawn, Bulldog, and Waltman were extremely intoxicated at the time of the incident, and wouldn't have even been able to put up a fight if they wanted to.

    Fact or a myth?

I asked about the WM 9 incident once on WOL when Meltzer had some guest on who was really close to Liz and Savage, and he said that Savage hitting Hogan was a myth, and that it really WAS a jetski accident. I remember reading once that towards the end of his run in 1997, Duke Drose got in serious trouble because he used to go to local bars and clubs after shows, hook up with random women and slip them date rape drugs and pretty much have his way with them. This led to him getting "roughed up" by Bradshaw, and eventually his getting fired. Any truth to this?

When did you start to hate Hogan?

I started hating Hogan from the last 10 minutes of Wrestlemania 9 untill Bash at the Beach 1996, at which point he re-established in my eyes his godliness.

    Random Movie Questions I have

Rocky 6 PROBABLY won't ever see the light of day, although the script is written, and Stallone is trying to use The Contender as a thinly veiled seheme to try and spark some more interest into boxing, so there's still a chance he could convince MGM to back it. Another Chevy Chase Vacation movie really wouldn't work logistically. He's what, in his mid-60's now? The kids would be what, in their late-20's, early-30's? Let's leave the past in the past. Eddie Murphy is keeping a low profile right now, which is probably what is best for him. After a non-stop string of terrible movies and box office flops, he's likely just waiting long enough for the public to forget about The Haunted Mansion and Pluto Nash. Although there currently is a Daddy Daycare sequel in the works. Chris Tucker is probably just sitting on his ass waiting for Rush Hour 3 to start filming in July.

    Donnie Darko...

I just watched this tonight, and I'm not quite sure what to think. On the one hand, I did find it to be enjoyable, and I sort of followed the story. On the other hand, the story didn't really make much sense to me and I didn't understand the ending. Is this just one of those films you have to watch several times in order to truely grasp?

Kill Bill: The Whole Bloody Affair

It's all politics really. Sometimes the MPAA will give a film of NC-17 rating just out of spite for the director. For example everyhting Trey Parker and Matt Stone have ever done has gotten an NC-17 rating on it's initial cut, even if you can cite specific examples of movies that are far worse then theirs. It's just that the MPAA don't particularly like Parker amd Stone, and thus are more then willing to impede their success.
