    WWE Old School

For those who haven't watched the Houston Show they put up this week, I wouldn't even bother. Tito vs Jake Roberts is a disappointment, lacking any real action or excitement. JYD vs Savage isn't bad, and I was entertained by the interaction between Savage and Monsoon, but the rest of the card is almost exclusively jobber squashes. You also have to love the crowd chanting "USA" during a British Bulldogs vs Sheik and Volkoff match.

WWE General Discussion - March 2009

Okay, in the last couple of days, Kennedy, Cena and Jericho have all had various digs at him. Kennedy even challenged him to a match. Obama= new mega heel. Aren't alot of wrestlers Republicans? It wouldn't surprised me if Cena, Jericho and Kennedy made those digs because they're registered Republicans. The only wrestlers I have seen actively support Obama have been John Morrison, Booker T, BG James, Christopher Daniels, Taylor Wilde, CM Punk and Mick Foley. Most of them are Republican if for no other reason than the fact that since most of them make six figure incomes, they are right in the tax bracket the Dems like to take from the most. This is also the reason why so many wrestlers live in Florida, although I can't remember the exact tax reason, maybe no property or income tax?

    Warrior's title reign

The problem with Warrior was that he was all sizzle and no steak. He had a lot of energy, and the crowd liked that, but he would be blown up before the match even began, and even then he wasn't capable of holding his own in the ring. Another big factor was the total lack of heels, just about everyone Warrior could have conceivably faced as a top heel had been soundly vanquished by Hogan and / or Warrior throughout the year prior to his title win. The Warrior / Earthquake feud from '89 never really went anywhere, and I've always felt that that could have been a money main event if it had been built up correctly, but that was clearly the program they were holding out on for Hogan. Other than that however, DiBiase, Perfect, Rude, Savage, etc. had all been jobbed out big time, and no one saw any of those guys as a credible threat. Maybe if they had introduced Crush as a heel singles wrestler and had him work with Warrior right out of the gate? I really don't know what else they could have done. Finally, once he came back from filming Suburban Commando, Hogan came back and made it clear that although Warrior had the belt, he was still the star of the show. Even while he held the belt, Warrior never got top billing, it was all about Hulk and Earthquake, Warrior and Rude was essentially treated as an undercard match at Summerslam '90, and after that he was just dead in the water.
  4. Apparently Steven Doll has passed away. Most likely won't recognize the name, but he was a opening match level talent in WWF / USWA as Steven Dunn, and later in WCW. The only thing I can think of him being involved in that was of any note was being in a match against Mike Enos when Scott Hall first invaded WCW. He was only 44 Well Dunn indeed.

    2009 Hall of Fame

Mike McGuirk would be great for Howard Finkel. Bruce Pritchard would have been good too, but I think he's pretty much been blackballed from the company forever.

    WWE Encyclopedia

I pawed through the new WWE Encyclopedia book tonight at Barnes and Noble, and I must say I'm impressed. This book is thorough, covering just about everything of importance in the companies history, and profiling nearly every single wrestler / gimmick to appear, including one shots like Friar Ferguson and Phantasio, and Ed Leslie's unidentified masked character that appeared twice and vanished. I'm sure someone will eventually come up with a list of everyone who was ommited, but just from my quick look through the book, TL Hopper and Jim Neidhart's "Who" character are absent, which I find odd seeing how they were at least as noteworthy as Battle Kat or Freddy Joe Floyd, both of whom do appear. Velvet Macentyre is also absent from the book, and she held the Women's title! Other than that however, I couldn't find anyone else they had missed, regardless of obscurity.
  8. Can't say this particularly surprising. Given how jacked up he was during his last run in WWECW, and his outspoken advocacy for steroid use as of late, it was really only a matter of time. Even if steroids weren't directly related to his death, I'm sure it didn't help him any. As far as Andrew Martin the wrestler goes, yeah he had a vanilla character, and wasn't a particularly good worker, but he wasn't among the worst either. He at least had the ability to be carried to watchable matches, which is more than you can say for a lot of guys. Plus, he will forever be linked to the storyline which cemented Triple H's spot in the Main Event.
  9. Given that most of the Storylines on this show likely revolve around things which haven't happened yet on RAW, this taping seems to be exclusively matches, with backstage stuff added in post production. Edge def Kofi Kingston. Real good match here Miz and Morrison def The Colons. Bella Twins left with Miz and Morrison after the match Chavo and Shelton def MVP and R-Truth Matt Hardy cut a promo in the ring on Jeff. Apparently Matt burned down Jeffs house last year and killed his dog. I couldn't make up something so stupid if I tried. Segment ends with Jeff coming out to confront Matt and attacking him. I assume this sets up their WM match Melina and Maria def Maryse and Michelle McCool. McCool attacked Maryse after the match Finlay def The Brian Kendrick to qualify for MITB Undertaker def Kozlov. This was quite atrocious. End of show 2 Dark Match #2: Edge def Matt and Jeff Hardy in a triple threat

    2009 Hall of Fame

He's turned down the offer before. He's afraid of what he would have to give up in terms of his likeness and such since it might mean he'd take a hit in the money he gets working indy shows. I think HTM's bigger issue was with the fact that he didn't actually consider himself to be retired yet, and didn't want to be in the Hall of Fame until he was. As far as Koko goes, I can see both sides of the argument. Personally however, I feel that not everyone that gets inducted has to be an main event draw or even someone of legendary stature. Even the mid card guys who made up the support deserve recognition.
  11. As a supplement to my live Smackdown report, as far as pictures / autographs after the show went Ted Jr, Festus, Kizarny, and R-Truth were all very nice and signed for everyone. Jesse and Shelton were pricks who wouldn't stop for anyone, and Orton was cursing at children.
  12. I'm here in the arena kinda bored so far, so I figured I'd keep you guys updated Dark Match: Eric Escobar def Kizarny Smackdown 3/6 Show opens w/ Undertaker in the ring cutting a promo on Michaels Jeff Hardy backstage with Vicky, says he won't wrestle Matt at WM MVP def Matt Hardy to qualify for MITB R-Truth def Chavo Edge / Big Show contract signing went no where until Cena ran in at the end and beat up both guys. Contract wasn't signed Maryse def Eve after the match Melina ran in and beat up Maryse. Real bad match here. Edge complains to Vicky about Cena backstage. Vicky cries and says contract will be signed on RAW Monday Shelton def Jeff via DQ to qualify for MITB when Matt comes out and hits Shelton to get Jeff DQd Triple H and Umaga go 3 minutes until Legacy comes and assaults Triple H. This made no sense to me given Ortons no contact stip on RAW, but what do I know? End of show 1

    The OAO WWE DVD Thread

I've always said that special edition DVD's of older shows, particularly the Wrestlemania's, would rock. Include clips from the TV leading up to the shows to explain the storylines leading up to the matches. Get some of the old guys in to record shoot commentary over their matches, etc.

    Vince Fighting Internet Leaks

That was precisely how they got rid of Dave Lagana who was revealed to be a stooge for Dave Scherer. A Non-Disclosure Agreement would be pointless, as they obviously couldn't pinpoint who leaks information in the first place, otherwise they would have gotten rid of them. Meltzer has been writing his dirt sheet for years and years and likely has connections and direct phone lines / e-mails to nearly everyone in the business, or at least people who are in close quarters with them, including Vince McMahon himself. After the Benoit murders, Meltzer admitted that Benoit had been a source for Bryan Alvarez for some time, but that Dave wasn't very close with him. You're never going to be able to get rid of people giving out information, so there's no point in even trying. What was the story with Bruce Pritchard getting the can a few months back? Wasn't he also revealed as a big time stooge for all the dirt sheet writers?

    Mid-Atlantic Championship Wrestling

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wiping Most of the Non-WWF Footage prior to 1980 has been lost to time. WWF footage goes back to around 1975, and but stuff from the 50's and 60's is almost non-existant. I don't believe that footage of Sammartino vs Rogers where Bruno won the belt for the first time, exists. Koloff vs Sammartino and Stasiak vs Morales don't exist on video either. It's a shame that so much of this stuff has been lost.

    2009 Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards

Wait, why do we even have a thread for this? These are about as significant as the Slammy awards, and probably just as worked as well.
  18. VH1 Classic used to be great when it was just non-stop videos. Although I suppose that format only realistically works for so long, it saddens me now that there are now fewer music videos, and they have a greater emphasis on other music related programming. I've been a fan of GSN since it's inception, but I hate how lately they seem to change formats every couple months. Sometimes they emphasize on classic gameshows, sometimes they focus more on modern ones, sometimes its reality shows, other time it's original programming. Regardless, considering the endless amount of footage they have the rights to air, there's no excuse for them to show as much Richard Karn / John O'Hurley Family Feud, and Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, as well as all the late night poker / blackjack crap that barely even qualifies as a game show. I guess a channel like this needs to air the crap to appeal to a larger base in order to survive, but I still miss the old days of Match Game, Dawson Family Feud, Password, Pyramid, etc.

    My Bloody Valentine 3D

I saw this tonight, the 3-D effects were cool, but the film itself was terrible, not scary, the violence didn't even try to appear realistic, the plot was flimsy and had several huge gaps in logic and continuity, and it just overall wasn't interesting. The producers obviously blew the majority of their budget on the 3-D stuff because the rest of the film looked amateurish at best. Some say that 3-D will save the film industry, I say it's a gimmick and a novelty, and a bad movie is still a bad movie whether it's in 3-D or not.

    2009 Hall of Fame

Eh, I wouldn't put too much into Windham getting released as a producer doesn't mean much, it could have been financial cuts, or an amicable split. Windham has a son in developmental too, so I doubt there's any bad blood. And since when does Bundy have any bad relations with WWE? Never heard that one....
