"Baltimore 13-10 over Tennessee. Same score as before, but this time the Ravens are just a tad more manly and get some sort of turnover to win it. It'll be ugly and brutal, but would anyone want it another way?" And yes, Antwon Mitchell I was fucking serious. Between that and the crap you said in the Street Fighter thread in TV/Film, consider yourself the very first person I've ever put on ignore.

Whew, that Nova game was a close call. If U of L wouldn't have these bizarre lapses in focus the game wouldn't have been in doubt, just a solid 9 point type win. Still, I'd rather have a 1 point loss to UNLV and a 1 point win at Villanova than vice versa. Next: Notre Dame. I fully expect a win, but not so much in the rematch at South Bend.

Val had a solid match with Rikishi in 2000, I think at Fully Loaded? Where Rikishi splashed him from the top of the cage. Another decent Val match was from SS 98 against the recently released D'Lo. But really, it's astonishing that Val has lasted this long. The whole RTC storyline wrecked everyone involved with it, so he probably should have been gone in 2001-02. That said, I had an idea that could have somewhat revived Venis, somewhat similar to what Khali is doing with the Kiss Cam right now. Val, being older and bald now, can't get the hot chicks anymore, so he brings fat chicks out of the crowd instead. Nothing great, but it beats being released. Killings could be so much more over than he is now if they would ever let him cut a promo instead of "WASSUP?" and nothing else. Sure, he's never been the greatest worker but he's adequate. I would say WWE missed the boat on Spears and Kruel, but having seen their OVW work I will say this: Some guys are just regional talents. As in if there was still a USWA type territory, guys like Spears and Kruel would be there much like Mike Samples or whoever from the past. They are the sort of wrestlers a promoter can push (and maybe get over) when there's a dearth of talent. But on a talent filled roster....why push them? That said, it's sad that a guy like Spears gets no chance in WWE while his OVW tag partner Cody Rhodes will be on the main roster for years.

Congrats to Florida for doing what they should have done and what everyone has done since 2003, namely beat Oklahoma in a major bowl game. I can grasp what Dama is going through, but quite honestly OU should never have been in this game. Consider the deranged scenario that got them here: They lost to Texas head to head, but Texas lost on a last second play to TX Tech. OU didn't actually jump Texas after this, but weeks of running up the score on helpless teams somehow convinced enough people that the Texas loss was forgotten. Add in a convoluted 3 way tie with Tech (who had no business being in this discussion given their late season flop), and the notion that since OU beat a semi decent Cincy team then they should go to the title game. All of this crazy crap to produce something that was obvious to anyone who has watched football over the past 5 years, namely another big game OU loss? At this point I don't want to see either OU or OSU in another title game. Not unless there is literally no other option, as in both are undefeated and 1-2 in the nation and everyone else has a loss.

Street Fighter is the best movie ever.
cabbageboy replied to Star Ocean 3's topic in Television & Film
Antwon, was that called for? I trashed some crappy movies. Life goes on. Anyway, the point I was trying to make is that some movies like Street Fighter and Judge Dredd were merely mediocre at the time, but watching 14-15 years later they're hysterical in how bad they are. Super Mario Bros. was just flat out bad then....and it's bad now. -
Not sure of the timeline of all that...let's see. Goldberg was on the various PPVs in 1999 up until GAB or so. I'm hazy on what he did on weekly TV though. The Bret angle was on a March 99 Nitro I think. Was Goldberg filming the movie as a way of being off TV and demanding a new contract?

Street Fighter is the best movie ever.
cabbageboy replied to Star Ocean 3's topic in Television & Film
Street Fighter, Judge Dredd, and Super Mario Bros. are like the Holy Trinity of 90s suck when it comes to comic or game movies. In fact Judge Dredd is the most egregious since it has some actual source material that could make a decent movie. Or maybe it's Super Mario Bros. for making a hideous movie based on games that are masterpieces. Batman and Robin is Gone With the Wind compared to that stuff. -
I'm not sure what the deal is with Goldberg circa mid 1999. He wasn't around to be sure, but I don't recall an injury he had until the idiotic limo incident in Dec. 99. Wikipedia says he was filming Universal Soldier 2 at that point, so maybe that's where he was. What sort of crap is that though? Why start a huge angle with a guy if he's going to be off TV for 2-3 months filming a movie? WCW hit a creative wall around the time of Spring Stampede 1999. That show had a lot of good stuff on it, but the main event was truly bizarre with DDP winning the title in a 4 way out of the blue. Guys were turning heel and face left and right: Hogan turned face for no reason, Flair turned heel despite months of NWO attacks, DDP turned heel despite being "injured" by Steiner, etc. The whole revived NWO angle played itself out quickly and Hogan got hurt at Stampede. It was this crap that wrecked WCW. Stuff like Flair going to the nut house, or DDP's utter bomb of a title run in April/May 99. I sorta feel sorry for Page in a way, since his title win and run had zero chance of getting over: He came back after Steiner destroyed him, then turned heel for no reason at all. Then he was soundly thrashed by Hogan on the Nitro where they destroyed the old set. Then he was tossed into the PPV main event 4 way seemingly at random just to fill out a roster of 4 guys. Then he WINS the belt?? Keep in mind WCW put the title on an untested champion during a time period when the WWF was rolling in the post WM time period (Austin/Rock, Ministry angle, etc.). And I believe Nitro was preempted due to the NBA at various points as well. Hogan getting hurt at Spring Stampede was a big problem, as was Goldberg filming the movie. I'm fairly sure Nash had the idea in mind to build to Goldberg getting to Hogan after going through the NWO guys, but those two things tanked that storyline. The Fingerpoke had little to do with all of that horrible stuff.

Kamala's Tape of The Month Club (a suggestion for a new regular th
cabbageboy replied to King Kamala's topic in General Wrestling
I saw that SuperBrawl 2000 show at a sports bar at the time, refusing to actually buy that PPV. I don't recall much about it, but it wasn't good by any means. Found Souled Out 99 on a rental tape a while back, it's actually not that bad of a show. Not bad enough for this thread anyway. -
Here's the dilemma about Memphis: Before 1989 it was another promotion (CWA) and then after that it was USWA. Those crooks from Cleveland bought the USWA but I have no idea if they bought the previous Memphis footage.
-
I'm fine with the PG rating actually. Let's face it, some of the angles they did 10 years ago are embarrassing to watch now due to the "risque" content. As long as they don't insult the viewer's intelligence it's fine with me to focus more on in ring wrestling, less trash storylines, less Russorific stuff.
-
Yeah that's probably the only good Lawler match they've shown thus far in Jan. The problem is getting his Memphis footage. Does anyone know for sure who owns that stuff? I know they showed a great Lawler/Bockwinkel match a while ago, but I can't recall if it was an AWA title match or maybe a Southern title match. If it was AWA title then Vince would own that (even if it was Memphis) but a Southern title match?

Raw really doesn't have a particularly great main event for WM so I just think they need to go with the top storyline on the show (JBL/HBK). It could also end up being some sort of 3-4 way match since there really isn't a real awesome 1 on 1 match. SD will be the real main of the PPV anyway. I'd rather see Cena vs. Undertaker in a non title match, could be interesting.

Let's talk about: Randy Orton's face run
cabbageboy replied to Epic Reine's topic in General Wrestling
Orton is a terrible face since he does nothing to elicit sympathy from the crowd. He sure didn't then anyway. Basically he was good guy because his heel buddies kicked his ass. However, take a look back at the post SS 04 angle on threads here...most people enjoyed that angle and thought it was compelling. The problem wasn't so much the booking, it was Orton not being over as a face. He got screwed and did go through the Evolution guys to get to HHH....it just sucked because Orton was boring and wasn't over. -
The Fingerpoke of Doom has been given a lot of revisionist history that isn't true. Sure, it pissed people off at the time but take a look at the ratings following it. The angle didn't really cause immediate damage since it set up a ton of NWO guys for Goldberg to destroy in theory en route to facing Hogan and regaining. In fact the Hogan/Flair angle in early 99 did well in the ratings for WCW and the SuperBrawl right after the Fingerpoke did a 1.1 buyrate. As far as Foley goes, I was on Winter break from college and had no net access back then so I knew nothing about his title win. And despite watching parts of Nitro I managed to never hear Schiavone's crap, so it caught me by total surprise.

I still stand by the opinion that JBL has to win the title at the Rumble. What can Cena do at WM with the title that would be at all interesting given the guys on Raw? Another match with Orton or Jericho? At least JBL winning could lead to HBK turning on him and winning the EC or something, go to WM, etc.

Baltimore 13-10 over Tennessee. Same score as before, but this time the Ravens are just a tad more manly and get some sort of turnover to win it. It'll be ugly and brutal, but would anyone want it another way? San Diego over Pittsburgh 28-27. Since I've been pondering this exact scenario I'll go ahead and predict it. I haven't been sold on the Steelers all year, their offensive line is mediocre and Roethlisberger seems destined to throw a costly INT here. This would set up the nightmare scenario of all time for the NFL: An 8-8 team with home field in the AFC title game. Carolina 35, Arizona 17. This is the closest to a no brainer in the playoffs. I wish Atlanta had won to give us an actually interesting game, but the Cardinals got the 1 win they could actually get, and now it's time to get beat down and go home. Philadelphia 31, New York 24. I hope I'm wrong about this because the Eagles largely bore me, but the Giants haven't been right since the Plaxico mess and they just seem like the sort of team that will blow it in this situation. Eagles will play decent D, McNabb and Westbrook will come through, Andy Reid will keep running the ball, etc.

Yeah, UT's career sucked pretty hard in between the Yokozuna feud and the Nash feud. He did nothing at all for the entire year of 1995 except dick around in pointless matches with IRS, Bundy, Kama, etc. Oh and of course Mabel too.
-
I always thought that these guys used to be these various professions but gave it up in order to focus on pro wrestling. Thus IRS was at one time a tax man but now was wrestling instead, but kept this as his act.

I saw a Jillian match in OVW against Mickie James that was quite good, during the goofy "mole girl" period where she was wearing a Vader mask.
-
Yeah I am tired of guys that are 1-2 winning the Rumble and after the past 2 years they better not even think of #30 winning again. Why not go with someone in the 10-15 range for a change? The Rumble is definitely the #2 PPV now though. Summerslam has lost a lot of luster in the recombined PPV era since there's really no difference between it and any other show. I'll go with Michaels winning the Rumble, MVP being tossed the quickest since he's losing all the time now, Jericho for Iron Man.

The 25th Anniversary of WrestleMania Thread
cabbageboy replied to DrVenkman PhD's topic in The WWE Folder
If they actually do a storyline with Jeff Hardy giving up a title match at WM to dick around with Christian in a nothing match, that is just.....wow. There is no way they will go through with that idea. -
U of L with the win today over UK on a crazy 30+ foot 3 from Sosa. My guys tried their best to blow it late (giving up a 7 pt. lead in the last minute???) but still managed to hold on. The irony about that UNC game is that Wake and Clemson have yet to lose so UNC wasn't the last unbeaten in their own league.
-
Ugh, what a hideous day of football, not so much because these games were bad (they weren't) but the outcomes produce the worst possible crap for the next round. There's literally nothing compelling about the Cardinals beating the Falcons so that they can be beaten by 4 TDs next week. But that pales next to the potential nightmare that would be San Diego advancing past next week. Keep in mind if they win and the Ravens also reach the AFC title game then that game would be in San Diego. Yes, at 8-8 the Chargers would host the AFC title game. That said, I knew deep down the Colts weren't any good this year. They won mostly on smoke and mirrors. But what in the hell were they doing with that 3rd and 2 with 2:30 remaining? Why on earth would they remotely line up in a shotgun there? Why pass at all? Just hand it to Addai, get 2-3 yards, and move on to the next round. With this loss tonight the Colts are now officially the Atlanta Braves of football.

Yeah but Utah lost Alex Smith and Urban Meyer after 2004 and they came back nicely after a few years. In the initial bowl thread I mentioned that this could be a letdown game for Bama tonight, since there's always that one team that has a mega letdown after not making the bowl they wanted. I picked Bama to win though, feeling Saban would get them ready regardless (Texas is the team I did predict would have the letdown). At 13-0 Utah should be the national champions and while they have no chance at the BCS title I hope somehow that the AP gives them a share. I want to hear BCS lovers try to defend how over the past 3 years there have been undefeated teams that won't be considered for the national championship: Boise in 2006, Utah now. Boise was more understandable since they beat a bunch of crap teams in the WAC and a down OU team, but Utah beat TCU, BYU, Oregon St. (the mighty USC slayers), and just dismantled an Alabama team that was #1 a few weeks ago.
