    OAO Raw Thread - August/28th/2006.

It depends. If Edge is retaining then they might go with a DX win in HIAC to close, but if Cena is regaining they might go with the TLC to main. Or I dunno....it's in Toronto and Edge is playing up the hometown angle, so maybe if Cena wins it'll be a heelish win and thus HIAC will close. That's it, I am going insane thinking about this. I mentioned something before SS about Raw but it bears repeating. What exactly is Raw's roster at this point? People harp on SD having such a crappy, thin roster but tonight Raw resorted to 2 women's matches, bringing in SD guys for the main event, bringing in the ECW champion, and a decrepit Hacksaw Duggan just to fill out a 2 hour show.

    Box Office Report...

Yeah I saw Beerfest and it was pretty damn funny. I've only recently checked out stuff by the Broken Lizard guys. Not sure if this was their best yet, but it's roughly in the same sphere as Super Troopers. Club Dread is the weakest.
  3. ECW did run a PPV in Georgia once before though, I believe it was Wrestlepalooza 1998. It's an arbitrary and odd place for this one however. What bigger sheep are there than the ECW audience? No, really. I don't really recall too many instances of ECW fans reacting contrary to what Heyman was communicating. The fans shit on Dreamer early in his career, but that was the point of the angle. Dreamer was a "pretty boy" punk that was trying to earn their respect. I'd even say the various WWE guys that have been crapped on were by design. Cena was fed to the lions at the PPV, but that was the whole point. Ditto Orton. Batista is the only guy that was sent there that made no sense. The fans crapped on him but it runs contrary to what we see every week on SD. Fans on Raw already boo Cena on a 50/50 basis. Orton is a heel anyway. But Batista is supposed to be a monster that is wildly over with the fans on SD....and they sent him to ECW to get ridiculed?

    OAO Raw Thread - August/28th/2006.

Here's the question however: If the NWO does in fact come back who will be in it? Not sure I can see Hogan in it. Scott Hall is probably off drunk somewhere (and he looked awful the last time I saw him on TNA). Nash perhaps but I'm not sure what his status with TNA is at the moment.

The big PPVs of Total Nonstop Action

Are you implying then that another tedious Jarrett/Sting match with a million run ins is better than Joe going for the title?

    Evaluating - Chris Jericho

The only injury I can think of with Jericho was late in his WCW run. I think it was a leg injury of some sort, but who knows. He may well have been playing with WCW so as to not be on TV where they could bury him on his way out in 1999.

Why no NFL in Alabama or Oklahoma?

Dama, why do you think OU and OK St. are crap basketball programs? Both have made the FF in the past 5 years. Allow me to go on a similar rant about Louisville. While there's no way we'd ever get an NFL team (Louisville and KY in general doesn't care THAT much about football...hell U of L could go to the BCS this year and we'd still be lucky to fill the stadium), Louisville has had all sorts of chances to lure an NBA team. Thing is, there are all sorts of issues to consider. First, Louisville is a small minded town run by old school money interests. The only reason the city and county govts. were eventually merged is one day we looked up and Lexingon was technically bigger in population. That's bullshit of course, since Lexington has maybe 260,000 compared to Jefferson County's near 700,000. Anyway, U of L simply has this town by the balls. Rick Pitino doesn't want an NBA team here, neither does Tom Jurich, and no one downtown is going to say shit about it. So now we're going to waste hundreds of millions of dollars on a new downtown arena and it's mainly to appease the university? U of L gets priority in scheduling, so no NBA team will bother to give Louisville a look. I mean honestly, what the fuck is the point of building a new arena if it's not to attract an NBA team? Freedom Hall isn't some dump on its last legs. U of L still draws 18-19 thousand a game and is top 5 in attendance every year. The idiotic aspect is that an NBA team could very well draw big here. The KY Colonels of the old ABA drew really well back in the 70s, but of course John Y. Brown and Co. wouldn't pony up the few million bucks it would have taken to bring the Colonels into the NBA. Anyway, as far as football goes places like Alabama and Oklahoma are far too obsessed with the college teams. Kinda like Louisville is with U of L basketball.

    WWF/E Tidbits from the past

I can defend the world title not going on last if there is a match that is clearly more important. At Bad Blood 2004 the Benoit/Kane match was a ho hum defense, not really a main event type match since Kane was just getting a lame duck title match in between HHH's title shots. Thus the HIAC match probably should have gone on last, even though I personally think the Benoit/Kane match was better. This year at Vengeance however? That was bullshit. Edge/RVD should have main evented that show instead of DX fucking around with a group of male cheerleaders.

The big PPVs of Total Nonstop Action

It's already got Jarrett/Sting as the main event for the title. Unless Jarrett drops it to Joe before then they've already fucked it up.

Most underrated Summerslam matches of all time

I kinda like Razor/Diesel from SS 94, with Walter Payton in Ramon's corner. Fun match. I also was amused by Bulldog/Shamrock from SS 97. Anyone else like this match? As far as Val goes, he's always been somewhat of a bland in ring worker without many stand out spots. He's needed a new finisher for a long time, since the Money Shot is a frogsplash and there are other guys who do it better. But really, he's mostly a guy doomed forever by his Russo Era gimmick. The porn gimmick got him over initially but it also prevented him from being taken seriously as a main event threat.

    Kurt Angle released!

I am also glad to hear this news. It's been troubling reading about Angle for a while now and he seriously needs to retire. At this point Angle being in the ring is not only a danger to himself but also to his opponent. Given some of those ECW house show lineups I kept expecting to see "Angle seriously injured" or "Angle damn near cripples RVD or Sabu." Here's hoping he gets straightened out, but doesn't get back in the ring. What does he have left to prove?
  12. I am baffled at the logic of this. First off it would be on PPV, so who cares what the crowd does? Second, they only reacted that way to the WWE outsider guys like Cena or Batista. There's no point in moving the show....just don't book Raw or SD guys on it.

    Willie the Worker

For some reason I don't really buy RVD being Willie the Worker. During that 2003-04 period RVD would go on various radio shows and give interviews, and he would flat out be honest about feeling misused. He'd badmouth HHH openly as well. It doesn't seem his style to use an alias and write a bunch of columns.

    Evaluating - Chris Jericho

I miss Jericho. Moreso than someone like The Rock, who at least we all know is in Hollywood making movies. There's a big gaping hole in the Raw upper card where Jericho should be.

    Curt Hennig vs Randy Savage..

I'm not really thinking of anything off hand. Hennig was undefeated until roughly WM 6 (?) and Savage was a heel from shortly before WM 5 till WM 7. Then Savage was retired briefly and Hennig was inactive after SS 91. I do know that they tagged at Survivor Series 92 vs. Razor and Flair. I'm not really sure about the WCW years.

    Tom Cruise gets Cut

InuYasha, you didn't think Collateral was a good movie? This is a bit of a silly move. Yeah Cruise has had a lot of dubious press in the past year, but it's not like he's had some irrepairable damage done to his career. If he'd just stay out of the news for a while this stuff would die down and he'd be popular as ever. It's not like he got drunk and was pulled over and ranted about Jews. Paramount could have simply called him in and said "Dude, chill out. It's bad for business."
  17. cabbageboy

    Curt Hennig vs Randy Savage..

I gotta go with Savage as well. Hennig was a guy who mainly had a great gimmick as Mr. Perfect but for the most part as simply Curt Hennig he wasn't really as cool. Of course, Savage was never really anything but Macho Man to most people so it's hard to imagine him as simply Randy Savage.
  18. How about RVD's psychotic sell of the piledriver from Dreamer at N2R 97? One of the greatest sells of a move ever. This Holly/RVD thing should prove interesting. I doubt it will last all that long because Holly is obviously there as a time filler till the ECW PPV for RVD. Someone is going to get stiffed all to hell in that match though. I bet RVD morphs back into his 2001 self vs. Kurt Angle, bust Holly's nose open and all that. Holly will retaliate, and so on.
  19. RVD/Holly is just a time waster of a feud because it's obvious that they are going to have to do RVD/Show at that Dec. PPV where RVD regains. I don't think Sabu is going to get the title at any point. That said, I am intrigued in that RVD/Holly matchup since it could get heated in a hurry. Holly will no doubt try to stiff RVD or RVD will lay in those kicks and bust him up.

Smackdown Spoilers for the 8/25 airing

ECW already has so many guys they can't even fit them onto the shows. That said I would take a 2 Cold Scorpio over Matt Striker on ECW any day. I am really hoping that this Vicki thing just leads to her going off TV, cause there is literally no good that can come from her being around after this.
  21. I am just amazed that anyone thinks LAX is going to do anything of note in the business. Fuck, it's Konnan's lame latino heel faction. I repeat: Konnan in the year 2006, still rambling arriba la raza and all that shit. From watching that TNA PPV recently I saw that Homicide is pretty good but I haven't seen anything yet as to why he's so amazing (a lot of ROH guys on TNA are like this). Hernandez? He was notably bad compared to the likes of Styles and Daniels. Right now they won't even be as notable as the LWO. This isn't to say they have no place in TNA or shouldn't have the tag belts, but they'll hardly start a boom. Anyway, for a boom period to occur it's going to take a total overhaul of the WWE talent system. Being from Louisville I have watched a lot of OVW over the years and been to a few shows, and while it's interesting on some levels it produces the same generic type of wrestler. It's like a factory. Guys look similar (big physiques, over 6 ft., etc), they do the same bland moves and are prohibited from doing anything interesting. This has produced the less than enthralling Lesnars, Ortons, Cenas, and Batistas of the world. Everyone says they need competent booking, but what does that mean? Here's what I think: Accentuate the various divisions. Have a world champion with several contenders vying for the belt. An IC division with about 5 different challengers in the mix. Tag divisions with real teams instead of tossed together singles guys. I would also enjoy seeing actual FEUDS with guys who hate each other's guts and want to kill each other in the worst way. Know what the best stuff on WWE TV this year has been? Lashley vs. Finlay. Two guys who have tried to kill one another for the basic reason that they hate each other. That's what we need: Less ironic humor and comedy, more vicious hatred.
  22. The Foley/Melina thing is another example of them using the wwe.com site for storylines while totally ignoring it with other angles. I mean, the DX spray paints the office tower bit was mentioned on wwe.com a month ago, yet Vince just NOW notices? It's almost like serving two different masters...appease the marks with Melina being a bith with Nitro, yet appease the net fans by acknowledging Foley's friendship with her. Thing is, how many people on the net give a shit about this? I honestly hope this doesn't even lead to Foley/Vince at any point. It's not so much even that I think it'd be a bad match per se, but when will they realize that being able to beat Vince in a match is essentially meaningless?
  23. Well the Melina stuff was just so...arbitrary? I don't even know what I thought of it, since it was somewhat ill explained on TV. Or maybe it wasn't, I mean Foley did explain they were friends and all that. It made sense but yet it didn't. As in here's Mick Foley, ostensibly a heel in a feud with Ric Flair, yet he's acting like the face telling how much he enjoys Melina's company. Here we have Melina, Johnny Nitro's ruthless bitch girlfriend/manager, now suddenly being sympathetic while with Foley, yet a bitch in the context of Nitro's matches. It's a solid storyline in a different context away from the Flair feud. As in if Foley was done feuding with Flair and Vince was giving Mick a lot of shit, then we find out more about his friendship with Melina, then she betrays him, etc. That would be fine, but it doesn't work in the context of the vicious Flair feud.

    Rick Scaia

Online Onslaught was finished around the time Wrestleline folded. The major guys from Wrestleline retained their audience elsewhere (like the original Smarks/Rantsylvania or 411) whereas Scaia just kept his site and nobody really cared because his writing always lacked real opinions. Which is ironic since that's what he praised so much about himself, his ability to point out positives and negatives. Thing is, when the product isn't so good anymore people are less inclined to wanna hear about the so called "good" aspects. So even keeled guys like Scaia went by the wayside, while bitter bastards like Scott Keith retained an audience.
  25. That's the thing about the Foley/Melina stuff that makes no sense to me. It's like it shattered some sort of 4th wall and there was a sense of cognitive dissonance whenever I'd see those two on TV. Foley's talk of Melina being so kind and caring in real life flat out goes at odds with her established TV persona as a ruthless bitch. It was like watching some Chyna stuff from 1999 where she'd be a face fighting a man in one segment and then helps HHH win a match with interference later. I'm not saying I don't understand it, nothing was confusing about it. It just doesn't really work all that well because it doesn't jibe with the TV roles that Foley and Melina essay. You know, they are setting up a Carlito/Orton feud it appears with Flair possibly mentoring Carlito (?). What's funny about that is that in theory it's just a feud to get Orton back on track, but to me Carlito deserves the win there. Those are two guys who are going in opposite directions; Carlito has improved dramatically in the past year, Orton has regressed.
