This Week in College Football 12/1 - 12/3

By the way, I am applying to FSU's grad film program...after that picture I think I am making the right decision. This weekend I just want something really weird to happen. UCLA over USC might be interesting but I can't see it happening. Too big of a rivalry game for USC to be napping. Georgia over LSU isn't really an upset I don't think (or at best a very mild one). FSU over Va Tech would be a joke more than anything. That leaves Colorado and Texas to bring the weirdness. What's with the Big 12 North anyway? It just sucks in both football and basketball. In football the South has Texas, OU, and TX Tech while the North has whatever jobber wins it. In basketball the South has Texas, OU, and TX Tech, while the North has Kansas and a bunch of jobbers.

I'll kick it old school: Dick Powell's narration as Phillip Marlowe in Murder, My Sweet. So many brilliant one liners.

    College Hoops: November

I have a feeling Sampson is somewhat similar to Tubby Smith in that he deemphasizes his players' offensive skills in favor of making them constantly practice D. One problem there is that college hoops is the exception to the rule that defense wins championships. Defense can win the SEC. Defense can win lots of games in the Big 12. It cannot however win a 6 game tourney in this day and age with a shot clock. Because no matter how good you are on defense eventually someone in the tourney will be able to hit some shots...and then you better be able to score. Consider UK's past couple of Elite 8 losses. Marquette actually made shots against them and UK didn't have enough offense to match them. Ditto MSU this past year, they made an insane amount of shots. I think Pitt has had the same problem.

    Juicy Tidbits from HBK's Book

Actually the Hogan/Russo thing was semi work/semi shoot. It started as a total work, but Hogan was offended by the comments Russo made in his speech and then bolted for real. I am sick of this "Owen was better than Bret" talk. I think the Road Dog of all people said something like this in the late 90s (height of the Bret bashing in the WWF). Recently Eric S. had a Bret bashing column where he mentioned Owen being better than Bret. What exactly is this theory based on? I mean, what really excellent matches did Owen have outside of Bret and the Bulldog Euro title match? This isn't to disparage Owen necessarily, since he mostly wrestled in the undercard but somehow I don't see him having **** matches with Jean Pierre Lafitte and Hakushi.

    King Kong

I got the Kong DVD box set recently and the original movie still rocks the world. I'd always wondered why RKO's resident hero Joel McCrea wasn't in the Driscoll role instead of Bruce Cabot, but watching it again I can't really see McCrea saying all the chauvanistic stuff. It's interesting though because McCrea and Fay Wray were in The Most Dangerous Game together and it was filmed on the exact same sets as Kong (right down to the huge log)! There was a cool scenario type deal on the extra features about the original idea for a film called Creation, which would have used the same dinos that Kong had. It was a wild premise of a group of people ending up on the island after a shipwreck and encountering prehistoric creatures, which would kill nearly everyone but the main cast. Then one guy (Steve) steps up and becomes leader and uses his knowledge and skills to build a new radio and call for help before everyone else is killed. It sounded great, I wonder why it was never made after Kong's success? Kong is also one of the few old movies I've seen in a theater reissue.

    College Hoops: November

How about a UK vs. OU game in the tourney? Say a 2/3 type matchup. Think that would be a pretty affair?
  8. My scenario for RVD wasn't necessarily to make the him unquestioned top draw on Raw. It was mainly to capitalize on doing another ECW PPV and give him some kind of push. His time on top would be from roughly June-August, where I figure he'd job the title to someone at Summerslam. Is this really too much to ask?

    College Hoops: November

Dama, this is the worry I posed for OU in my initial top 25 thoughts. Can OU hit the broadside of a barn? I too have been lecturing UK fans about why the WVU win isn't as great as they think it is. Let's face it, WVU had a fluke miracle run last year, somewhat similar to Bama in 2004. They had a bunch of dudes get ridiculously hot from 3 pt. land, beat BC and Nova in the BE tourney, and then carried that momentum past Wake and damn near beat U of L. Before that though? They were a middle of the road team. I dunno what I think of UConn yet. They looked bleh vs. Arkansas, pretty decent vs. Zona, and I can't judge the Zaga game since Zaga had to be gassed after that 3 OT game. Yeah, Duke, UConn, and Texas have cemented themselves as the top 3 but I don't think any of them are really amazing or unbeatable.
  10. Usethesledge, I already layed out my excellent scenario to give RVD that title shot in a way that would seem believable and exciting to most anyone. I mean, it certainly beats "Cena holds the belt for all of 2006, or just jobs it to HHH" or perhaps "Orton wins the Rumble and beats Batista at WM." Cena and RVD actually do have a past, though it was so bizarre and confusing on Smackdown that nobody remembers or cares. I remember a SD in particular where RVD just flat out nailed Cena with a standing kick and left him laying....I thought it was a heel turn and the start of a nice feud, but typical of SD in 2004 the whole thing went nowhere and RVD stayed total face and ended up teaming with Cena by year's end.

Hey, at least RVD is hurt so he doesn't have to refuse to go and get heat with the office again.

    NFL Week XIII

Yeah I finally picked against the Jags. It might sound cliche, but I think they might have a tough transition week to Garrard with Leftwich being hurt. I'm thinking they'll lose a close, tough decision to the Browns, then next week the Colts will edge them. I can't believe that Denver is some sort of juggernaut, which is why I have the Chiefs in that game. I'm still predicting the Broncos to go in the tank late in the season and finish about 11-5.

    NFL Week XIII

And now it's yet again time for my predictions for the week~! SUN, DEC 4 Tennessee at Indianapolis 1:00 PM: Biggest upset ever! Not. Colts in a squash, about like the previous matchup if not worse. Green Bay at Chicago 1:00 PM: Favre always wins in Chicago, but the Pack seems to find ways to lose this year. Bears by 6. Jacksonville at Cleveland 1:00 PM: I am so torn on this. On one hand the Browns suck, but on the other Leftwich is out and I'm not 100% sold on David Garrard. Also, I've thought the Jags would find some way to lose 1 of the 3 road jobber games of late and this would be the one. So I guess I'll go Browns by 3 with serious reservation. Minnesota at Detroit 1:00 PM: The Good Ship Viking keeps cruising with an assbeating of helpless Detroit. Vikes by 10. Dallas at NY Giants 1:00 PM: This one is huge. Surely the Giants can't keep making these great comebacks only to fall short. NYG by 7 in a very good game. Tampa Bay at New Orleans 1:00 PM: I'll go with Junior Simms here by about 10. Buffalo at Miami 1:00 PM: What a jobber matchup here. Miami has quit trying to win (right Saban?) so I'll take the Bills by 7. Cincinnati at Pittsburgh 1:00 PM: In these games you have to ask yourself who needs it most? The answer is of course the Steelers, coming off 2 straight losses and they can't afford a 3rd straight at home. Atlanta at Carolina 1:00 PM: Carolina doesn't really amaze me, but this one is pretty tough to call. I'll go with the Falcons by 3 just to make the NFC South interesting. Vick seems to have Carolina's number like TB has his. Houston at Baltimore 1:00 PM: Winners: the fans! God I dunno, I guess Baltimore by about 6 in an ugly 12-6 type game. Arizona at San Francisco 4:05 PM: Oh God. Another shit game. I'll take the 49ers by 3 in OT since they always beat the Cardinals. Washington at St. Louis 4:05 PM: Ryan Fitzpatrick baby. Redskins might be done, so I'll take the Rams here at home by 7. NY Jets at New England 4:15 PM: Ah, back to playing jobbers for the Pats. NE by about 6 in their usual boring fashion. Denver at Kansas City 4:15 PM: Denver soooo needs to lose to someone like RIGHT NOW, and it'll be here. KC by 10. Oakland at San Diego 8:30 PM: Easy pick here, SD by 21 in an assbeating. MON, DEC 5 Seattle at Philadelphia 9:00 PM: Seattle is really, really not all that good. It's hard to take Mike McMahon in an upset, but what the hell. Eagles by 3.

    Shelton Benjamin v. Trevor Murdoch

I dunno for sure, but I too pondered the idea that HHH caught him banging Steph or something.
  15. I haven't said that Orton refused to job on the Eddie show, it's the baffling insistence to "keep him strong" on a show that had no actual bearing on the future. Hell, even HHH would have insisted on doing the job on such a show (and apparently did since he lost to Benoit). Orton could have looked at that booking and said "No, this is Eddie's tribute show so there shouldn't be a DQ. I'll lose tonight, no biggie." My RVD idea has nothing to do with Orton or the world title on Smackdown anyway. If they're going to do another ECW themed PPV, it's obvious that they are going to have to push RVD come June. They have to then. The main problem I had with last year's show was that it was a nostalgia PPV without any heated feuds or storylines (other than the WWE invaders). With a lot of the ECW talent under TNA contract they need something to make this PPV special. Here's what I suggest: At WM, RVD can win another Money in the Bank match, which if they put the right guys in it would be an incredible match. Soon after RVD can cut a brief promo saying that unlike Edge, who sat on his title shot till he had no momentum left, he will use his shot soon at the "right time." Since One Night Stand will technically be considered a WWE event, RVD can use the MITB shot at that PPV. At ONS RVD would of course get his big title win in front of the rabid ECW fans, though I'm not sure who would have the title at that point. If it's HHH, I'm not so sure he'd want to do this scenario but it'd be wild to see how the ECW fans react to The Game. If Cena has the title still, it'll also be interesting to see the ECW fans eat him alive. After that if they just wanted it to be a transition thing, fine. Job RVD out at Summerslam 06 to HHH or whoever. It'd just be nice for him to get his moment in the sun, then he can put over younger guys or stay in the title mix, etc.
  16. Yeah, your boy Randall is such a team player he didn't even lay down for a fucking 3 count on the Eddie Memorial show. As much as I'd love to see RVD win the Rumble and go on to WM, it's probably not going to happen. Let's face it, right now we're almost in Dec. and RVD isn't even a blip on the radar screen. Even if he comes back and is ultra over, chances are the booking for major PPVs will already be determined and it'd take him a few months to get into any sort of contention. I did have a great idea for RVD in regards to WM though. Maybe he can win another Money in the Bank match and get a title shot at some point. So where would he use it? Why, ECW One Night Stand of course.

This Week in College Football 11/21 - 11/26

On another note, disaster strikes for U of L. Brian Brohm is out for the season now with a torn ACL. He'll miss spring practice but will hopefully be back for the start of the regular season in 2006. It's still possible that we can beat UConn but if we get Miami in the Gator Bowl with Hunter Cantwell starting at QB it's most likely an asskicking.

    NFL Week Twelve

I don't care about the Colts going undefeated, in fact I hope they don't because I can just see them finally losing in the playoffs and that would be a disaster. As I said here's the scenario: Colts will not bring the A game in Seattle and lose by a little and go 15-1 or so. At this point I just want them to get home field. That's what is important, not 16-0. I mean I can't see Denver going 14-2 by any means, but I wish they'd lose a couple more to cease the anxiety.
  19. If they're going to put the title on Orton why not just do it now? Then have Batista come back from injury, beat him at WM, and if they want Orton to regain a couple months later, fine. They cannot seriously mean to keep the title on Cena THROUGH WM next year.

The OAO RAW Thread - Nov/28th/05

Right now a HHH/Cena match would have the weirdest crowd reaction known to man. Honestly I don't think anyone would get cheered and nobody would get booed either. We're talking HHH/Jericho from WM with even less heat. I'd suggest going with Cena/Hogan at this point. Cena's already getting booed, so why not use this to their advantage like another WM 18 match (Hogan/Rock)? Against Hogan the fans would of course boo Cena to high heaven and then you can do a feasible heel turn out of it.

The OAO RAW Thread - Nov/28th/05

I figure that Vince next week will give Bischoff his ONE final chance to do something "right." And then he'll just make it Cena/Angle 1 on 1 where Angle finally wins. Hey, I can hope...right? Here's the question I have to ask though: Why does Vince want to fire Bischoff? I mean aside from the obvious "He hates Bischoff" reason. Raw's guys job out at Survivor Series? Uh...so? In a roundabout way this makes Smackdown look half like total jobbers that Vince won't even claim and half like rebels who are sticking it to the man (who wants them to succeed on a B level, but not threaten his A show). I mean hell it's not like Team Raw was beat down in the Survivor match and lost 5-0. And who honestly gives a shit about Bischoff himself losing a comedy match? Did Vince think Bischoff was preparing himself for a Boogeyman run in? Further, why punish Bischoff for scheming to screw Cena and failing to do so? Isn't it more of a terminable offense for a GM to plot to screw someone out of a title period? Are we to take it that if Bisch had succeeded in screwing Cena that Vince would be pleased to see his #1 "face" dicked over? Anyone else find this as bizarre as I do? It's like Vince is angry at Smackdown for doing well.

The OAO RAW Thread - Nov/28th/05

Bischoff and Masters both look like total dipshits. I mean Bischoff has his ONE big chance to not get fired and who does he rely on besides Angle? Chris Masters! Would you want your career riding on whether Chris Masters could win a match? I mean why not just have Angle/Cena 1 on 1 with the same stips and Daivari as ref? It's clear from tonight's show that Raw is trying to push people that the fans simply aren't into. In some cases they just don't react period (Carlito, Masters, Murdoch) and in other cases (Cena) the crowd actively turns brutal. The thing that is goofy is that I kinda feel sorry for Angle in all this. I felt the same way for Jericho during his Cena feud. Jericho was admittedly jobber pity, but I really feel Angle's frustration and hope he wins the title. Is this really the way I'm supposed to feel?

    Box Office Report...

By the way, the musical Chicago was a bit different than the 1942 film Roxie Hart. In that movie I thought Roxie was more sympathetic as she was caught in the arms of the other dude (though never actually cheated on her husband if I recall) and it was her husband that shot the guy, not Roxie. There was also a reporter character that ended up with Roxie, which was cut out of the musical version. The husband ended up being the biggest dirtbag in that film, and I think it actually worked a bit better that way. Oh and there was no Velma.

Just Watched the Bret Hart DVD

I'd say the Bret DVD might not have the choice selections that Flair's did but it does give a much better overall look at his career from beginning to end. It's a tough call, so I'll say they are even.
