    Weekend Boxoffice for 10-14

Domino tanking doesn't shock me since the trailer was totally confusing. It didn't explain what the movie was about, who it was about, anything much of note about the story other than "My name is Domino Harvey...I am a bounty hunter." Also, just because Keira Knightley was the hot chick in Pirates of the Caribbean doesn't mean people want to see her in her own vehicles. Elizabethtown doing bleh business isn't shocking either, though I did go to see it due to the local connection (quite a bit was filmed in Louisville). That said, if you aren't from the Louisville or E-Town areas a lot of stuff will be lost on you.

Glad someone mentioned Bulldog/Owen, which I still have never seen all the way through, just on the weekend recaps. Anyone have that match on tape?

    Batista Interview/Chat

I remember after the ECW PPV this year Batista said he didn't care much for the ECW style either...then proceeded to do a violent Hell in a Cell match. Batista is a mark for The Warlord...Chris Masters does his finisher. I'm telling you, The Warlord had an unreported effect on the young hosses of America. Is it wrong that I am a mark for Bulldog/Warlord matches? Fishyswa, I agree about the criticism of the X division. I remember when they had that 1 cent PPV of X division highlights and my friend Chris called during it and said something like "This stuff is bullshit. It's all just guys doing wild spots, but not much to it beyond that." Mind you, I actually like the X division matches when they are at their most insane and spotfest oriented. I'm sure Christopher Daniels and AJ Styles will have a fun match on this PPV coming up....but why should I care who wins? There's no real dramatic tension in most TNA stuff, no investment in who wins or loses. It's cool looking, I like it, and then I forget about it right after I see it.

This Week in College Football 10/13 - 10/15

Well, after today's mega debacle in Morgantown it is now officially basketball season in Louisville. I am so sickened, disgusted, and flat out ready to do violence after that 4th quarter vs. WVU that I honestly needed to calm down for a couple of hours. It literally doesn't matter what U of L does from here on in. We could squash everyone by 40 pts. and this season is still a complete disaster. Fuck West Virginia. U of L still beat you in the Elite 8. Enjoy going to the BCS and having the shit kicked out of you again by Va Tech or somebody. And at the same time as that game? Notre Dame getting the shaft on a Dusty Finish. And the Astros taking a 2-1 series lead. My cup runneth over.

    King Kong

The original film's effects are astounding for 1933. Hell, I think those effects hold up better now that stuff like Clash of the Titans, which was made nearly 50 years later. I saw the preview for this Kong before Fantastic 4 and the crowd gave the opposite reaction: Everyone was buzzing about it. On a slightly related note, is it just me or did RKO make more good stuff than any other studio in the 30s/40s? It's kind of weird that a sort of major studio just went under in the 50s and nobody really noticed or cared.

    White Sox/Angels ALCS Thread

I'm not really rooting for either team here but if I had to I'd say I hope the White Sox win. The Angels got their World Series 3 years ago and outside of Orange County is anyone desperate to see them get back? At least with the White Sox you have the Black Sox curse to hype. If the Angels make it I won't be mad though...if the Astros win the World Series, I may go postal. One, it's the Astros and I hate them. Two, it'd be a FOURTH straight year of the god damn wild card team winning the World Series. If you finish 11-12 games out of first in your division you have zero business winning it all.

The Oklahoma pimping was in high gear but was justifiably scrapped after the 1-2 punch of the Kansas St. ass kicking and then the loss to LSU in the Sugar Bowl. I didn't argue them being in the title game over USC though since there was really no better option (USC had 1 loss as well). By the way is USC really going for a 3 peat? I mean isn't LSU considered the national champion for 2003? I know USC finished 1st in one of the polls but does that really count as a national title?

A lot of RVD stuff is like that. Guys you think he will have amazing ***** matches with (Benoit, Eddie) tend to be mildly disappointing at times, yet he has great matches with some big ass dudes like UT and Bam Bam Bieglow. RVD/UT from Vengeance 01 was the best match on that show (yes, better than either Jericho title match on the show). Anyone want to see RVD go after UT at WM this coming year? Sure he'd job but it might be a fun match.

    Best "Total Package"?

Eddie used to not be that great on the mic in WCW but that's where he has improved a lot in WWE. I think he's one of the best guys on the mic today, capable of making the crowd laugh, make em hate his guts, and so on. Who else in WWE now has that kind of range on the mic? Eddie is also well versed in the Mexican style, Japanese style, and North American style. He can mat wrestle, do a decent amount of aerial, has the ring psychology. Eddie = God.

    Rocky VI Officially Greenlit

Darthtiki, what's up with the RKO logo there? Did you, like me, get the Val Lewton box set? Since I got it I've been seeing nothing but the old school RKO logo. Does anyone know who the main opponent is in Rocky VI? How about do it video game style and have Rocky go through everyone on the way to some new baddie? He can take out Thunderlips, Tommy Morrison again, Ivan Drago, Apollo Creed....oh wait.

Mr. Kennedy is a fucking lame ass

The backlash on Kennedy was somewhat predictable given his one note gimmick of announcing himself. I think in time he needs to move away from this and do it maybe on a PPV but not all the time on TV...sorta make it a special occasion. I nominate Bobby Lashley as the new flavor of the month, though I have a hunch he might be the flavor for a long time.

    Smackdown

I think I'm the only one here who thinks this Booker/Sharmell angle is a good idea. Think about it: Scheming wife manipulates her husband to turn on his friend, become more upwardly mobile, and become a champion. That's Shakespeare. You can now call Sharmell Lady McBook. That Boogeyman promo had me almost falling on the floor I was laughing so hard. What was with the smashing of the clock over his head? I'm not going to trash Orton getting pushed because at the moment I'm not sure who else on the heel side of things has a lick of heat. I might say Ken Kennedy but he's too new and not ready to be a main eventer at this point. I'm feeling Bobby Lashley right now. Nevermind the Lashley/Lesnar idea, how's about a Batista/Lashley match in the future?

    Rocky VI Officially Greenlit

I submit that Rocky V would have been really good if not for a couple of things: 1. There is no actual main event fight. I mean it was all right there for them: Rocky risks it all in one last fight against Tommy Morrison, beats his ass in a title fight, retires as champ. But what do they do? Just a goofy fight in a restaurant and street. Sucks. 2. The Burgess Meredith cameo. What the fuck was that? I don't recall him talking so proudly of Rocky at ANY point in the series, yet he was waxing poetic about him in that ghostly vision scene.
  15. Yeah but the thing is this dude Craig just seems like....some guy off the street. Sure Connery was originally an unknown but the series itself wasn't known at that point so it didn't matter. The public didn't exactly warm up to George Lazenby (though the one he was in was excellent in my view, one of the best in the series), but he was seemingly a total unknown brought in to be a 2nd rate Connery. Roger Moore was already a fairly well known star of some US films and UK TV series, so people at least knew who he was. Brosnan was around forever and had been in stuff and also Remington Steele. Timothy Dalton wasn't insanely well known but he was the 2nd choice behind Brosnan (and wasn't just out of nowhere). This Craig dude? I can't recall him in anything, and I've even seen Road to Perdition. Don't remember him at all in it, but it's been a while since I saw it. Jude Law's creepy killer who takes pictures of his victims was more notable in that movie. They might go for a more Ian Fleming style in the next movie, but is that what will really draw money or please fans? Bond book fans and Bond movie fans aren't quite the same beast. Bond movies are the definition of formula movies (over the top villain, hot chicks, gadgets, etc) and when a film deviates from that (like License to Kill) the public tends to stay away. Unlike the Batman franchise, I don't think Bond really needs a huge overhaul...just some minor tweaking and a bit more serious tone.

WCW facts, tidbits, and stuff people forgot

Yeah but Steamboat was at least notable in 89. As in fans knew who he was, knew he had great matches against Flair in the past and Macho in the WWF. Also, Steamboat wasn't meant to be the future of the company or anything...just a guy for Flair to job to and regain from and then move on to Funk. But Austin? In 1994 he had zero heat and not really much singles credibility. And no, beating Dustin Rhodes doesn't = credibility. By the way, what was up with that Starrcade US title match with Austin and Rhodes? Why book a 2/3 falls match and job a guy 2 straight? Hell, just give Dustin a token DQ or countout there to justify the stip.

    RVD/Hulkster on Mancow

Not really huge insider news, in the recent Ross Report (you know, before JR was fired) he mentioned RVD was likely coming back for the Rumble.
  18. I haven't seen much of him but I did see Bobby Lashley squash him on OVW last week. Boogeyman is too funny though.

Lucha stars (including Mistico) to WWE?

Nah, they have to go to Smackdown since 1. That's where the cruisers are anyway and 2. That's where the Mexicans are in WWE.

Lucha stars (including Mistico) to WWE?

TNA's ratings? They are drawing like 0.8 or something. I hardly think WWE has anything to worry about on that front. If they let these guys come in and bust it out, then it's cool. But I'd rather not see these guys do the same boring style as Smackdown's cruisers.

In regards to UT I think the best he was ever booked was in the 1998-99 period, at least when it came to in ring (not the Ministry silliness). I watched Souled Out 99 not too long ago and there's a nice forgotten gem with Chavo vs. Norman Smiley. This was the blowoff to the "Norman kills Pepe" angle.

Just wondering but did RVD do any shoots on WWE or HHH or anyone in particular?

I think the best matchup right now would be USC vs. Va Tech, but maybe that's me. Va Tech is in a bit better conf. so if they run the table and win the conf. title game vs. FSU I think they'd get that #2 spot in the BCS.

Perhaps WM 14? Seemed like every match had some build on that show. The Rock/RVD match was actually on a Raw I do believe, they did have a rematch on Smackdown that Van Dam won (then the next Raw I went to RVD jobbed clean to Edge for no real reason). Speaking of RVD stuff from that period how about the matches with Angle? The ones where RVD would stiff Kurt and bust him open and Angle's wife took to the net trashing RVD. The hardway blood looked great on TV.

    NFL Week Six

I mostly don't think the Colts have tried to just jack it up and run it up on anyone this year. Some teams like JAX and Cleveland have seemed to deliberately try to get them into ugly street fights. As far as the Rams go, I didn't say they were as good as the Warner peak years. But they have scored 31 a couple times this year, 25 another time, 24 another. The Cardinals did hold them to 17. Point is, they can still score in most games so it'll be interesting to see if the Colts shut them down.
