"Heaven and Hell" by Black Sabbath

Here's one thing I've always thought Ozzy had going for him: He's hardly ever campy, nor does he scream in unappealing fashion (not that Dio does). Let's face it, Dio is simply campy. All that shit with crystal balls and medieval times...it's just unintentionally funny. Ditto Bruce Dickenson...I like some Maiden stuff but the guy is so over the top it becomes funny. I mean Run For the Hills? What the fuck does he know about the plight of the American Indian? By Ozzy being campy I don't mean that he isn't sometimes funny, but I don't think anyone ever was supposed to take stuff like Bark at the Moon seriously. Ditto some album covers, they were meant to be silly. But the Ozzy Sabbath stuff? Not at all campy. One listen to Paranoid and you get the following themes: --Vietnam War protest. --Mental illness --Isolation and alienation --Nuclear holocaust --Drug use due to the previous --More drug use At least those themes make sense. I know that some have said Ozzy merely sings along with the guitar riff, but that's really only true of Iron Man and Electric Funeral. Ah well at the end of the day it's all a matter of preference.

Precisely. Anakin in the last 2 prequels was hardly a choir boy. There was always a hint of the darkside there, from his backtalking Obi Wan to wasting the sand people. It's wild how the prequels give new meaning to stuff we've already seen in ROTJ. What seemed at the time like "Vader turns good and destroys the Emperor" basically turns out to be "Vader is protective of his family and doesn't want the Emperor to kill Luke."

The OAO RAW Thread - 5/23/05

Well the thing is what exactly is the point of any of this? Sure there are a lot of storylines on Raw right now but the characters are so muddled for the most part that it's hard to know who to cheer. You can do this shades of gray crap sometimes but at the base level you have to have a heel and a face. Even Russo realized this for all his hype about shades of gray. Seriously, Raw with HHH on top is so unbearably stale that I'm almost wishing someone would injure him just to get him off my TV. It's just this horrible, repetitive bullshit. Either HHH has the belt and it's boring or someone else has the belt and HHH challenges for it ad nauseum until he wins it back. I mean why doesn't Batista simply say "Fuck you, I don't want to wrestle you again?" Basically the past few weeks go as thus: HHH is on the show all the time and bores the shit out of me, and the show sucks. OR....HHH is not on the show and they seem to intentionally make it suck so that people wish HHH was back. Smackdown right now is so much better than Raw it's not even funny. Now that the Bradshaw push from hell has been toned down I'm finding SMDN quite enjoyable.

The OAO RAW Thread - 5/23/05

Agreed. Benoit and Tajiri weren't remotely garbage style wrestlers on ECW. They would have eschewed chairs and tables. Another fundamental problem with this is Vince's whole admission on TV that he was basically funding Heyman under the table. I know it gives a logical reason for the PPV to take place, but it makes ECW seem kinda....lame. Corporate even. Also, Heyman should have pointed out to Bisch that ECW actually outlasted WCW by a week or so (I do believe WCW was sold to Vince right before ECW went bankrupt and ceased operations). The way this is being framed though I have to wonder if they are setting up for ECW to come back, at the very least as a faction within Raw. Is it possible they might split the two hours of Raw between Heyman and Bischoff? Think about it, the crowd still doesn't respond to the aching WWE letters, they flat out boo WCW....but ECW draws lots of cheers.
  5. I looked at the list a bit more and Detour is on there? What in the fuck? If there is a more overrated, overhyped B grade 40s noir I have yet to see it. I even like Edgar G. Ulmer stuff, but this dingy cut rate film has zero business making a top 100 list, especially when you see that they left off true classics like Murder, My Sweet, The Big Sleep, and The Maltese Falcon. Oh, and where's stuff like The Adventures of Robin Hood and The Prisoner of Zenda?

    According to this week's Observer

Speaking of Hiroko, just where is Kenzo Suzuki? Hurt? Released? And hey, she's not much worse than Kimona, not like Kimona was some sort of huge talent. Anyone else think they need to scale back on the skanks on the roster?

"Heaven and Hell" by Black Sabbath

I'm amazed no one has truly trashed Crimson Idol over that "Dio Sabbath is the only Sabbath" remark. Look, Dio's time with Sabbath is a footnote. His albums with them are slightly more important than curios, but not by much. I even listened to Heaven and Hell the other day and while Dio may have a better voice technically than Ozzy, man does he ever get monotonous and boring after about half of that CD. I'm sorry but the Dio Sabbath stuff simply isn't as timeless or classic as the Ozzy Sabbath stuff from roughly 1970-75. Heaven and Hell sounds, well, dated. Put on Sabbath Bloody Sabbath (remastered version) or as Incandenza said, Master of Reality, any of that stuff. Those albums sound amazingly modern and fresh, various elements inspiring anything from thrash metal to punk to Seattle grunge.

I was just thinking about this recent trilogy, putting it in some perspective. One big reason that it won't prove as popular overall as the originals is that the plot is byzantine in how much of a mindfuck it really is. Let's review: --Palpatine (as Sidious) manipulates the Trade Federation dumbasses into invading Naboo under the guise of a trade dispute, thus forcing Amidala to come to him for help and essentially has the current Chancellor removed and himself put in power. Palpatine really could care less about the overall success of the Federation since they are basically jobbers anyway, and if anything their failure makes him look better in the Senate. Darth Maul is sent to occupy the Jedi and if he can take out a few, so be it. The man is a fucking genius. --In the time between Ep. 1 and 2 Palpatine (again as Sidious) gets his new apprentice, Count Dooku, to preorder a clone army despite the lack of an urgent need for one. Dooku, who is almost as brilliant as Palpatine (but not quite as we later find) installs himself as the leader of a separtist alliance with the Trade Federation and Co. in an effort to start a massive galaxy wide war with the Separatists and the very clone army he arranged! The Jedi have no clue about any of this shit, and really, how could they? And due to the situation Palpatine is given emergency powers in the Senate. --In the third film Palpatine's power is now nearly complete. He betrays Dooku and lets Anakin chop his head off, and then of course does the whole manipulation thing to get Anakin on his side. Without Dooku the Separtists don't know their ass from a hole in the ground, so they are quickly finished off by the Jedi and Clones, and new apprentice Vader eventually kills the Trade Federation morons. Oh, and of course the Jedi are nearly all wiped out and Palpatine is now Emperor. The more I think about it, the more brilliant the whole scheme is. The Clone War was rigged to begin with...the Separtists were an enemy that Palpatine himself created, the clones an army he himself had created.

After seeing this film I couldn't help but look back at ROTJ and the whole ending there. You'd think given how upset Vader got over Padme's death in this film that the Emperor would know that messing with the man's family is a very taboo area. For the most part the film is amazingly in step with the emotions and actions of the characters in the original films. I think Anakin was never quite at ease with his heel turn, note his regret after Mace Windu is killed by the Emperor, like "What have I done?" From that point there was no going back really, he HAD to join the Emperor cause the Jedi certainly wouldn't want him. I do agree that the Jedi seemed out of touch with reality and had become a bloated tool of the bureaucracy. In this film I remember hearing that stuff Yoda said about forgoing your loved ones and not missing them, and I can't say I really agree with it.

    Judgement Day

Not sure why anyone would badmouth the Eddie/Rey finish. I know it was a DQ, but what made anyone think it wouldn't be? From SMDN recently did anyone think Eddie cared about merely getting a pin? I mean he brainbusted some jobber on a chair, suplexed Rey on steel steps....he was out to injure, not to win. This sets up a stip match where there must be a winner. As far as the main goes, it was more my brother badmouthing Bradshaw and missed spots than me. He was being a bit too nitpicky mainly because he absolutely detests Bradshaw and wishes they'd just release him, haha. Anyway I never said the main wasn't a good match, but here's my thoughts on massive blood in a match. Blood can make a bad match a good one, but blood alone can't make a match GREAT. Blood can be the icing on the cake for a great match (a la Hart/Austin). Bret and Austin were good enough to have a real match in the ring without the blood...as WM showed Cena and Bradshaw aren't.

    Judgement Day

I enjoyed the Cena/Bradshaw match tonight but let's be honest here. It was a bloodbath because neither guy is really worth a shit. The main event was a fun bloodbath but it wasn't especially well wrestled or anything, hell my brother and I noted 5 times or so where JBL missed a spot or looked awkward. It HAD to be a bloodbath, we know a regular match with these two would be death. Eddie/Rey while a DQ finish was easily a much better wrestled match, while also having some amount of violent brawling.

    Edge vs Batista

I'm thinking Edge comes up a little short tomorrow night, or gets DQed, or Kane runs in. I know Scott Keith is expecting some odd Evolution reformation with HHH, Edge, Christian, and Flair but that seems odd at this point (Edge shouldn't play the flunky heel at this point, it makes no sense). Here's a wild thought: HHH shows up and costs Batista the title. After all, he knows at this point he can't beat Batista, so maybe he'll have more luck with Edge. It also is payback for Batista costing HHH the tourney match.

    Box Office Report

Nah, I don't think Mr. and Mrs. Smith will do 130 million type business. I have to pose the question: What was the last Brad Pitt movie that did that sort of business? Ocean's 12 did about 125 million domestic but that's not a Pitt vehicle exactly, all sorts of draws there. And aside from the first Tomb Raider (which was sold more to the video game market) what sort of hit has Jolie been in? Basically the movie looks kinda like a cross between Prizzi's Honor and War of the Roses, neither of which exactly lit the world on fire from a money standpoint. I have to think Longest Yard will debut ahead of Madagascar. Madagascar is a cartoon yes but it just doesn't look like much to me, I may be wrong. Also I haven't seen anywhere near the ads for it that Longest Yard has had. Sandler can still certainly draw when he does the pictures his fans like to see him in, and this looks more like that than stuff such as Spanglish and Punch Drunk Love. Unlike Jim Carrey, Sandler's fans just don't accept him in such roles, or maybe he's just not a good enough actor to pull it off. Fuck it, I hope ROTS stays on top for a long while. We need an uber dominanat box office megahit.
  14. This list is goofy. Star Wars is on here but not either of the other two in the trilogy (yet all 3 LOTR). Any list without GWTW is a farce as well, especially when listing stuff like Invasion of the Body Snatchers...I mean it's a nice little 50s sci fi movie but not exactly top 100 ever material. Why would Baby Face be on this list? I hardly think that movie is THAT critically acclaimed, just typical old school pre code Warners goodness but not a **** movie. Oh and no Marx Bros. stuff? No Night at the Opera or Duck Soup? What the fuck is wrong with these idiots?

    Judgement Day

I dunno, but let me put it this way: Cena's blade was so sick that I swear I thought he just tossed a can of fake blood on his face off camera. You know, if you consider Cena's best matches they've been the Eddie street fight and this tonight. He's obviously a much better brawler than routine wrestler. I didn't see all of the Eddie/JBL match last year but what I did see seemed sicker...blood was all over the ring there. No one should have gone in tonight expecting a resolution to Eddie/Rey. Given the way Eddie has acted did anyone think he'd wrestle a clean match without bringing in chairs or getting himself DQed? Hell he got himself DQed against some jobber. This is part of the bigger picture now where the big blowoff will be some sort of street fight, HIAC match, stips galore. And there I think Eddie will just destroy Rey and leave him laying in a pool of blood, take his mask, etc. Thing is, what is up with Chavo in this feud?

    Judgement Day

I was mostly bored and decided to watch this PPV tonight mainly because I've been amused by some of SMDN's storylines of late, namely Eddie/Rey and even Booker/Angle. Tonight's show was shockingly good. Going in all I expected was a good to great Eddie/Rey match where Eddie would obviously doing something psychotic to get DQed. As far as the main event goes, I have no idea what that ending was all about...but man that was a crazy, bloody brawl. Exactly what the WM match needed to be. I got the feeling they realized that match was lacking and kicked it up a notch. All I can figure is that they foreshadowed the ending with the repeated Duran camera shots and mentions of "No mas." Cause JBL just kinda quit mid match a la Duran. That said, this feud is over with. Finished. No more crap with Bradshaw. Thing is, I have no idea who Cena can feud with at this point. I'd say Eddie since he's far and away the most insane heel right now, but he's still screwing around with Rey. That feud is starting to take on a Roadrunner/Coyote vibe, with Eddie as the Coyote. At some point though they'll have a no holds barred or HIAC match and it's going to get REAL ugly. I'm talking Rey getting beat half to death. In theory once that happens RVD should be about ready to return and he could avenge his little buddy and take on Eddie. As far as Angle/Booker goes, I'm sure some are upset about Angle jobbing here but what other alternative was there? The guy has been trying to rape his opponent's wife...he kinda HAD to job. Booker needs to show a bit more vicious emotion, he seemed to just wrestle his normal match instead of one against a guy who was threatening his wife. Overall a very good show tonight and a pleasant surprise.

Just wondering, but where is all this stuff about Han being at the Academy? In the films the Academy stuff is never exactly explained, I always thought it was something akin to the Jedi Academy, but since there were no Jedis at that point it was a variation. Or was it just a form of private schooling? Either way it's hard to believe Han Solo would ever be in such a place.

Yeah I was thinking this thread was a bit premature since it doesn't even have Sat. or Sun. figured in. Ep. 3 will make a lot more than 85 million, probably more like 145 million.

One and Only Star Wars Geekiness Thread

I'm pretty sure it was meant to be his actual face, with him getting burned up. Anyway, Slayer I agree with most of what you said. The whole Clone Wars aspect of the film seemed like so much filler, mostly a plot device designed to get Yoda and Obi Wan away from Anakin/Sidious so he could be corrupted. Grievous was a really lame heel, and as I said earlier it makes no sense to get rid of a master heel like Christopher Lee so early in the film and replace him with a robotic jobber. I'm telling you, take away Count Dooku from the Separtists and what do you really have? A bunch of loser droids, the fucking Trade Federation, a wheezing Russian robot that's supposed to be leading them but that they themselves don't care about. Dooku was the ONLY one that had any credibility with the audience, hell he was the main heel from the last movie...and he was just offed with little fanfare in the first 15 mins. The NOOOO didn't really bother me, I am a mark for campy NOOOO type scenes. The Padme/Anakin stuff was necessary but the one scene of "You are beautiful," "That's because I'm in love," "Yeah I am in love with you" was kinda goofy. You hit a good point with the "something good, then negated" aspect. I was wrapped up in the intensity of Order 66...and then all of a sudden the Trade Federation dickweeds show up and brings back negative Ep. 1 memories. Or Jar Jar shows up at the funeral, killing what should be a mournful moment by his very appearance. Overall there's a lot of good stuff in this movie but let's not even try to pretend it's the best film in the series.

    John Cena & Tha Trademarc's

Hey, Cena's CD debuted higher than the recent Limp Bizkit album, so apparently people take him more seriously than Fred Durst at this point.

    Classic Kurt

The best stuff in Angle's career is still he screwing around with Austin and McMahon. Wearing the silly cowboy hat, singing Jimmy Crack Corn...it was gold. I always thought the Angle/Brock stuff was centered more on Brock really. As in it was Brock who tapped, Brock beat up a crippled kid, etc. Angle just happened to be the guy who made him tap, could have been anyone really.
  22. cabbageboy

    Should Flair

Michaels is a veteran though, not a totally washed up old man. He's about 40 right? Flair is more like 55. And no, they shouldn't put the title on Flair. I don't see any point in it, unless they wanted to have him beat HHH at some point and then be a harmless transition champ to the big new main event guy they are molding. Hell, I dunno about HHH getting the belt back. Sure it'll happen but what is the point other than to feed HHH's ego? There's still no one for him to feud with once he wrecks Batista's career. They'd basically almost have to trade some guys from SMDN to Raw (Cena, Eddie, whoever). Right now the face side on Raw is just horrid, no one with the possible exception of Shelton is gearing up for the main event.

    NBA Western Conference Finals

I know the Suns bench is thin but I haven't really seen this hurt them to any degree. If you have guys that are in shape they outta be able to go. Deep down I think the Spurs are probably the better team overall, but I hope the Suns win this series. They've always been one of my favorite teams since the Barkley/Majerle days. Suns vs. Heat in the Finals....a nice warm weather vibe to it, don't you think?

One and Only Star Wars Geekiness Thread

So it's kind of like a deal where a mediocre basketball team loses by 20 to one team, but beats another team that's a powerhouse because the coach of one team was the assistant and his mentor knew everything he'd do? These are splitting hairs I guess, but I might argue that Anakin didn't hate Obi Wan as much as he did the whole situation. He was just pissed at everything. To wit: Anakin and Padme are talking about the Jedi "betrayal." Anakin says they're being rounded up and killed and Padme asks about Obi Wan. He's like "Well, I dunno...hopefully Obi Wan will stay loyal to the Republic and I won't have to kill him." So you see, he did have second thoughts about killing his old master here, whereas by the time Ep. 4 rolls around he'd been a Sith for 20+ years and didn't mind killing anyone (aside from his son of course). All those years of being fucked up and deformed probably killed off ANY good feelings for Obi Wan.
  25. cabbageboy

One and Only Star Wars Geekiness Thread

The more and more I think about this I consider Obi Wan the true hero of roughly the first 4 episodes. Whether it's taking out Darth Maul, tangling with Jango Fett, Dooku (well ok he never fared so well there), basically taking the steam out of the Clone Wars when he finally kills Gen. Grievous , and of course finally makes Anakin his bitch....Obi Wan always manages to pull something out of his ass. One could argue that Anakin didn't quite go full force vs. Obi Wan, still having feelings for his master. Whereas when betraying Mace Windu...well why not? Windu was always sort of cold towards Anakin, and Anakin probably wasn't as hesitant.
