I think Jamie Foxx can shed the comic rap easier than Jim Carrey mainly because he was never THAT well known of a comedian. Carrey is one of the biggest comic draws ever, and that hurts the way people perceive him when it comes to more serious roles. When I saw Foxx in Collateral I had no trouble with his previous funnyman image, whereas when I see Carrey is something like Eternal Sunshine I can't help but think "Why is Jim Carrey in something like this?" Bob, you are seriously overhyping Mean Girls. It was a nice little teen chick flick, maybe had slightly more to say than others, but it was really just a very toned down Heathers with most of the bite removed for mainstream consumption. Of all places it was on Cold Pizza that I heard some insight into the Giamatti snub. Woody Paige mentioned his dad was Bartlett Giamatti, the commish of baseball that banned Pete Rose. I was shocked to hear that actually, no idea. Woody pondered if his dad banning Rose had something to do with it. Who knows.

Face it: Ga Tech was a one year fluke last year. Do I need to go into them beating N. Iowa by 5, BC by 3, Nevada by 5, Kansas in OT, and OK St. by 2? They were extremely lucky throughout the tourney and when you win a bunch of close ones, it catches up with you next year. Ask the Carolina Panthers. OU might just be getting a bunch of tough games at home and getting fired up for those. They look solid right now, but I am holding out until I see them play well against a good team on the road. Wed. night is a game I dread: Marquette. For some insane reason those guys just own U of L. They have lost 2 in a row but that makes me even more nervous since they'll be desperate to win. When is that Diener fuck ever going to graduate?

Here's my analysis. The Oscars are all about FINALLY giving people an award after dicking them for years. Thus: Best Picture: Gotta go with The Aviator. Eastwood has already won stuff so Million Dollar Baby won't win I don't think. Sideways is an indie flick and we all know how well those do in Oscar races. Finding Neverland is the sort of movie that gets all sort of nominations but no wins. Ray, as we have noted, isn't a great actual film. So basically they'll give it to Scorsese to shut him up. Besides, I saw the movie and it was really great. Best actor: Rock need not fear. Foxx will win a heated contest, but man is this category stacked or what? DiCaprio will finish 2nd narrowly here and cry on Scorsese's shoulder. Depp won't give a shit. Best supporting actor: For whatever reason I think Freeman will get this. Million $ Baby has to win SOMETHING and do you realize that Freeman has never won? At least I don't think he has. Best actress: The only two of these films I've even HEARD of are Eternal Sunshine and M$B. I think Kate will win this, mainly because "Two time oscar winner Hillary Swank" just sounds so strange. Best supporting actress: Well, Natalie Portman played a stripper (not quite a hooker, but still) so she will likely win. Haha! Best director: Gotta give it to Scorsese this time.

Holy shit, that's right. Richard Roxburgh didn't get nominated for Van Helsing at all, did he? I thought that guy would be a shoe in for worst supporting actor. That was the single worst performance I saw all last year.
-
That is stupid to have Stiller nominated considering nearly all of those films made decent to great money and were fairly decent. Bear in mind that these Razzie dorks nominated The Adventures of Ford Fairlane for everything in 1990, so really, how good can their taste possibly be? I think people let Elwes slide for Saw to some extent, mainly because I have no idea how the hell ANYONE would play some of the scenes he had to do.

Dude, I swear I used to watch Three O'Clock high practically every week on HBO back in the late 80s. Whatever became of that movie anyway? My god, to me it's up there with Heathers in terms of dark HS flicks but nobody seems to give a shit about it. Oh, The Wizard is funny as hell when viewed today. It has all sorts of nostalgia value, like the heel kid who uses the Power Glove to beat Rad Racer and is like "I love this thing, it's so choice." One of the movies where the blatant product placements actually HELP a great deal. And yes, I too wonder about the warp whistle. How the hell could the retard kid know where it was when no one had ever played the game before and there were no cheat tips out yet? I don't exactly think on your first time playing Mario 3 you would think of running up the P meter, then flying above the screen to a secret room and finding the warp whistle. I remember playing Mario 3 for the first time on those 10 min. arcade games (the ones that had 5 titles or something)...hell I did better than that retard did. At least I didn't die on fucking World 1....my time ran out, haha.

Nl5x, I don't think you quite grasp my comments on 90210. Yes I know the show's existence was during the 90s, but it wasn't particularly a 90s type show. Let's face it, a bunch of Beverly Hills rich fucks going to HS and college is more of an 80s concept than anything. It might as well be Less Than Zero. I'm just saying 90210, while certainly a more popular show, wasn't as representative of the 90s as My So Called Life. If you watch My So Called Life you would say "That is a totally 90s show." 90210? It could be 1988 or 89 and no one would have noticed any difference. Anyway, as a whole I don't understand the selections for these shows. For instance, why talk about Cliffhanger in 1993? Yeah it is a fun movie but there is nothing particularly 90s about it, as in it doesn't really date or anything (whereas stuff like Commando would be a totally 80s musclehead actioner). Also, I love True Romance but the movie was hardly anything people SAW or cared about at the time....it grew in popularity over a decade. And yet in the 93 show there was no mention of Beavis and Butthead? I don't understand this at all, that was a no brainer to mention. Also, am I the only one who was pissed that in the 94 show they talked at length about the Cranberries yet no mention of the punk revival (Green Day, Offspring, etc) of that time period?

I think this is going to be one ugly mofo of a game. The Pats defense is too good, but yet the Eagles D is about as good. Owens playing here is a fascinating thing to watch....god, they'll break his legs, ribs, etc. I'm thinking it'll be Pats in a real nasty, ugly game....9-7 or something.

The OAO AFC CHAMPIONSHIP THREAD!!!
cabbageboy replied to Dr. Tyler; Captain America's topic in Sports
You guys don't have to worry about me badmouthing one team or the other....I personally am going to be bored to tears at this Super Bowl. Hell I was happy the Panthers won the NFC last year to PREVENT this matchup. I'm telling you, it'll be a really ugly game with a score of like 9-6. -
Why is it that they are constantly playing the race thing with McNabb and the Doug Williams comparisons and yet when Steve McNair got there with the Titans there was hardly any mention of him being black at all? Was it just that everyone focused too much on the Titans getting the Music City Miracle and beating the Colts and Jags on the road? I'm glad everyone is so happy over the Eagles finally making it. I'm hoping to God it is against the Steelers. I just have this theory that the Eagles/Pats will be a truly dreadful borefest (we're talking 9-6 here) if it happens and I absolutely do not want to see that game. Besides, shouldn't the Eagles want to play the Steelers again and avenge how badly they got destroyed? One more thing about the Eagles....what is this shit with Freddie Mitchell? I mean all the nicknames and hype. At first I thought it was a tongue in cheek postmodern irony sort of thing, like a jobber player hyping himself as a joke. But seriously, does he really think he's hot shit or is he just fucking with everyone?

OU/Texas was an exciting game, not particularly well played but fun. Dama, OU might have been overhyped in football but I think they are severely underrated in basketball this year. They are 15-2 and looking like a strong 2 seed at the moment. If they could hit the broadside of the barn they'll get real dangerous, heh. U of L finally trashed Tennessee today, strange game. It looked like another narrow win over UT, but finally Pitino said fuck that shit and we went on a crazy 24-2 run and just stomped the Vols. I think I have been saying all over this thread that Kansas isn't shit this year despite whatever their record may be. Today certainly proved that. I sorta thought when I saw that game listed "Hmm...Kansas on the road, Nova nearly beat BC, could be a trap." Didn't think Nova would crush them though. The sickest thing is that Duke will undoubtedly go up to #2 in the polls now...and Illinois has Wisconsin on the road this week. Ugh. That said I think Duke has UNC on the road too, so who knows. BC might be the only unbeaten left before long, and I'm sure either Pitt or Cuse will dispose of them handily. Incidentally, Pitt is becoming my guilty pleasure. I had a blast watching that game vs. UConn tonight, great comeback. Pitt is just so BUTT ugly and fun to watch in a sick sort of way. Can you imagine that epic Big East tilt next year with Cincy? First team to 40 wins!

During the last 10 years of Denny we had some really solid teams (1991-2001). We went to the Sweet 16 in 1993, 94, 96, made the Elite 8 in 97, and at least made the tourney in 1999 and 2000. U of L's decline was a very odd and gradual thing beginning when we lost out on Allan Houston when his dad left to coach TENN. Actually I don't think we EVER won a C-USA reg. season title and just won the conf. tourney one time (when it was here at Freedom Hall in 03). My theory is this: We aren't really an overpowering team anymore, yet all these jobbers in the the conf. THINK we're still the Doctors of Dunk, so they bring this furious A game. That's why every year we end up jobbing to Houston, TCU, UAB, or some other jobber. We don't care, they do. It's that simple. Next year we'll be in the Big East where no one hates us aside from the others that are joining. As far as Kansas goes, they have 2nd round upset written all over them. Just this year's version of UK and Stanford.
-
I dunno if McNabb has choked in ALL of these conf. games, but let's take a look shall we: 1st game, Rams. Eagles were only 11-5 compared to the Rams being 14-2, so this is hardly a choke. Played them tough, lost by 5. 2nd game, Bucs. This is the biggest choke. Eagles were down 10 and driving, and would have made an interesting game had they scored. Instead McNabb throws a goal line INT to Ronde Barber that is returned 100 yards for a TD...game. 3rd game, Panthers. I'm torn on this one. I mean yeah, he got hurt with broken ribs, but still...losing 14-3 to a team they'd beaten in the reg. season? Ouch. So while McNabb might not have choked in all those games he's kinda like a guy with a dark cloud hanging over his head.

Does anyone know what came in 2nd and 3rd in this vote? I wouldn't have voted for Kane/Lita/Snitsky at all...hell that angle had me tuning in to Raw for weeks on end, haha. Mainly to see how hilariously horrible it could get, but at least it entertained in some fashion.
-
This is McNabb without a shadow of a doubt. Brady already has two rings so he doesn't have THAT much pressure. Roethlisberger is a rookie and a bad game is almost expected. This is Vick's first shot at the main stage and he'll likely have more chances in the future (and besides it's on the road). McNabb absolutely HAS to win this game or forever be branded as a choker.

I guess my main problem with all this 90210 stuff is this: Nothing about the show really is really 90s. I mean hell, if that show was on in say 1987 or 88 would anyone have noticed the difference? Anyone want to take on the challenge of finding its ratings compared to the ultra popular shows of the time? And by the way, I was born in 1979 so it's not like I am too young to remember it...I just never gave a rat's ass about it.
-
I totally agree. What in the hell has UConn does this year that would even make them a top 25 team? The best win they have is vs. INDIANA for god's sake. Think about that one. Whenever they've played a remotely tough game they have jobbed (UMass, OU, BC). The rankings are real goofy right now, no doubt. Aside from a few very select teams it seems like no one has much momentum, no one has much consistency, etc. Normally I wouldn't think either Cuse or UK are top 10 teams but who else can you put there?
-
OU actually schools A and M fairly easy tonight. Could OU be Duke's lone win against someone decent? Heh. Know whose fans are really starting to get on my nerves? Bama basketball fans. I can't believe these people, they think Bama was just SO for real last year. Never mind that they just got a really nice matchup against an overhyped 1 seed in Stanford. Christ, if Bama was a 7 seed in that bracket instead of an 8 they'd have gotten UConn the 2nd round and would have gotten squashed in the same fashion that they ended up getting squashed by anyway.

Who will WWE management give the lead roles to?
cabbageboy replied to strummer's topic in The WWE Folder
It's funny that few have mentioned the guy on the current roster with the most actual movie experience: Rob Van Dam. Mind you, he's never had to carry anything but you can't tell me he couldn't be a decent action star. -
If you already have the original release I wouldn't bother with the director's cut. I've rented the original and my brother got the director's version for Christmas, and to be honest I noticed no big difference. I'd get the director's version if I didn't have the 1st one though.

The notion that the 90s was the same as the 80s up until 95 or so is a yes and no statement. I wouldn't say music was much similar at all, at least once Nirvana hit and gangsta rap became the norm. Now if you wanna talk about cheesy pop music, sure stuff like Amy Grant and Wilson Phillips might as well have been from the 80s. Movies were also basically the same stuff. While I doubt Pulp Fiction would have been an 80s type film, does anyone doubt that Forrest Gump could have been with ease? 1994 was easily the most noteworthy year of the decade. 1998 was perhaps a more ENJOYABLE year for me personally, but there was way too much crap like boy bands and rap/rock to really make it terribly significant.
-
It didn't shock me when Texas beat OSU last night, since the game was in Austin. That said I am still more sold on them come tourney time than I am Kansas. I know Kansas was Elite 8 last year but look who they played for crying out loud...Pacific 2nd round (who upset Providence), UAB in the Sweet 16 (the notorious UK upset), before finally jobbing to Ga Tech. I'd say the main reason Cuse beat Kansas in 2003 wasn't due to Melo, it was the fact that Kansas did their usual chokejob and made less than 50% at the line.
-
It's the so much Rock being rusty that I object to, it's the idea of a part time guy who acts mainly nowdays coming in and getting the main event paycheck. If SMDN was a stronger show they wouldn't be in this bind. To be honest I was just remembering the most notable UT/Angle matches from PPV. I had totally forgotten the SMDN matches, in fact I'm still hazy. I know I saw them, but I obviously must not have cared.

The main problem with doing the shows on the 90s is that by the 1990s there was no unified pop culture that people could agree on and say "Yes that was a notable thing that year." Stuff like Beverly Hills 90210 or Melrose Place was never THAT popular, folks. I'm sorry it just wasn't. Fox was certainly the #4 network and the shows weren't anywhere near the phenomenons they make it out to be. When I watch these shows I tend to tune out stuff like that because I never watched it and simply didn't care. Ditto Ally McBeal...someone had to tell me what the hell that baby was all about cause I had no idea. Never watched it. The 90s is a hard decade to have nostalgia for and will remain that way no matter how much time elapses. It was too jaded of a time period, too much sneering and looking down on previous eras. While I enjoy several bands from the decade, I can't really get myself to have huge nostalgia for the period and I'd think that is mainly because I don't think people were terribly happy in the decade.
