This Indiscriminate time period in College Hoops

Pitt seasons of late go as thus: They crush jobbers and go about 15-0 and get to the top 5. And they hover around the top 10 and get a 2-3 seed in the tourney playing their ugly style. And they'll be gone by the Sweet 16 when they play someone who can score.

"I agree that Wake shouldn't be ranked #1 and will probably only finish third in the ACC, but if your criteria for "doing anything" is winning the ACC, they actually did do that with Tim Duncan." Wake won a very down ACC in 1995 or 96 though. Duke was garbage both those years (Coach K back ailment years). UNC was also nothing great in 96. With Duncan Wake jobbed out to OK State in 1995 (Sweet 16), got maimed by UK in the 96 Elite 8 (a game they shouldn't have been IN if U of L simply holds a late lead), and in 1997 they lost 2nd round to Stanford. By doing something I refer to Final Four, or winning it all. As far as Ga Tech goes, I don't know. If you had told me last year after they crushed UConn that they'd make the final game, I'd say that made sense. But they were NOT an impressive team in the tourney, just barely scraping by N. Iowa, BC, Nevada, Kansas in OT, and OK State before UConn stomped them. In fact it seemed like a flukish run. Dama is right about Kansas or OK St. I think OK St. will make the FF, or at least a regional final. Kansas will be their usual choking selves.

Best "Once Upon a Time In" movie

I was pretty sure that several characters call Eastwood "Joe" in Fistful. The drunk, the guy in the hotel, etc. Here's where I get paranoid: What if these names (Joe, Manco, Blondie) are merely nicknames or aliases and he's still the same exact guy with no REAL name? Either way I don't find him a terribly compelling character...kinda hard to care about a guy when you know nothing about him. It's like Wolverine if Wolvie didn't try and find out about his past or something.

My bad, I forgot Iowa....they've looked tourney worthy thus far as well.

Yeah they might have lost by 15 instead of 30. Face it, Michigan is irrelevent in basketball these days and there's not much on the horizon to change that. The Big 10 as a whole is also garbage....that conf. will be lucky to get 3 bids this year (Illinois, Michigan St., Wisconsin). In this ACC/Big 10 challenge they'll be fortunate to win 2 games out of the 9, and that's if Illinois can beat Wake tonight. Incidentally, why is Wake even ranked #1? They'll probably finish 3rd or 4th in the ACC behind Ga Tech, UNC, and maybe Duke (who was very solid last night vs. MSU). My motto on Wake: They didn't do anything when they had Tim Duncan, why would they start now?

Dudes, chill...they beat fucking MICHIGAN last night. Michigan hasn't been on the map since about 1995. Need I remind anyone that Ga Tech beat Illinois-Chicago by 1 a week or so ago? I've seen various levels of shakiness from nearly everyone so far this year (Kansas nearly lost to Vermont, UNC DID lose to Santa Clara, Ga Tech/UIC, Wake vs. Zona). Some teams that have routed opponents simply haven't played anyone yet (UConn, OK St., UK, etc). Why anyone would think UNC's win over USC was notable is beyond me. USC lost to friggin LaSalle last night. We'll see what UNC can do against a real opponent this Sat. with Kentucky. If they squash UK I'll be the first to give them props. I'm pretty sure they'll kill IU tonight, heh. I might be the only one who thinks Florida could be for real at long last. They've been smoking people thus far. We'll get a better idea of how good they are when U of L plays them in the Swamp though.

    Notre Dame fires Willingham

If they join the Big East next year they'd get whacked by U of L. And Pitt too most likely. Am I the only one here who is gonna just come out and say they never wanted a black coach to begin with, but basically HAD to hire him when George O'Leary was exposed? I actually agree with Wilbon on that part.

Best "Once Upon a Time In" movie

In a way I gotta agree with IDrinkRats. Not about the Zep part but OUATITW. I've tried and tried to watch that movie and I find it like watching paint dry. I've never been big on spaghetti westerns...the pacing is just dreadful in virtually all of them, what with all the 10 minute long gunfights between TWO PEOPLE (or 3 in the case of G, B, & U). After a while I just thought "Jesus, Chuck...will ya just SHOOT that Fonda fucker?" Incidentally, isn't OUATITW a Man With No Name movie? I thought Bronson just took over the role from Eastwood. By the way, there really ISN'T a Man With No Name in the Eastwood films: He's called Joe in Fistful of Dollars, Manco in For a Few $ More, and Blondie in G, B, & U.
  9. Cena at this point won't be much more than a transition guy anyway. It's hard to know what to do with him really. His rap gimmick makes him very popular but it also makes it hard to take him seriously as a top guy with a heavyweight title (The Truth had this problem in the NWA). I'm sure they'll put the title on Cena at some point on SMDN, but here's hoping that they'll let Heyman form some sort of ECW faction to capitalize on the DVD sales (not necessarily as heels or faces, just let people decide). That's about all I can see truly reviving SMDN.

    MLB HOF Ballot Released

Does Sandberg still have the record for homers by a 2nd baseman? If so, you'd think that along with an MVP and 9 Gold Gloves would get him in. They just put Ozzie Smith in, and Ozzie was to shortstop what Sandberg was to 2nd in that era (albeit more flashy of course), and Sandberg certainly swung the bat better. I have a sort of cognitive dissonance regarding Mattingly. When I think of him I say "Great ballplayer" yet he's not in the Hall. I guess injuries and playing for some crappy Yankee teams in the 80s hurt.

    NFL Week 12

In all fairness those teams all made the playoffs last season, so there was some plausible reason for them being scheduled for MNF. You would THINK a KC/TN matchup would be good before the season since they went 13-3 and 12-4 last year. I can't help but think with T.O. or without him, the Eagles will just find some way to lose in the playoffs. Oh, and I can certainly see the Falcons winning out from here on, albeit none too impressively. All they have left are jobbers like the Saints, Bucs, Panthers, Raiders, etc. The last game vs. Seattle might be tough if Seattle SHOWS UP, but that is certainly debatable. Thus the question becomes: If Philly loses to GB or maybe the Rams and the Falcons win out, who gets home field? Both would have the same record in conference (each would have one loss in conf., one loss out of conf.), and both would be perfect in the division. There isn't the sort of head to head tie breaker that would determine Pittsburgh and NE.

    New BCS Rankings

Memphis is lame, there IS a reason the Big East didn't want them to begin with. They don't draw dick in either sport and what fans they do have are trash (at least in basketball, I don't think they draw enough in football to make a judgement). I know, I'm biased since I'm a Louisville fan, but my disdain for Memphis comes from years of seeing their fans throw knives on the court against U of L and even last year they stormed the court after beating us by 4...when we didn't even have our two best players. Anyway, the BCS. What is this continual shit with Georgia? This is NOT a real great team yet they continually hover in the BCS top 10 despite two losses. U of L at least moved up 1 spot to 9 but we should be #7 or so (the odd team out). I think it is time to get rid of automatic bids. If your conference has a champion that is only #10 or so in the BCS, you shouldn't go ahead of someone that is ranked #7. Just take the top 8 in the BCS and have the bowls.

    MLB HOF Ballot Released

I don't understand why Sandberg wasn't 1st ballot to begin with. The guy was an MVP and was the best 2nd baseman in the National League for years. Add to it that he has the most career homers for a 2nd baseman. Boggs is obviously in with 3000 hits. Dawson is trickier. He's one of those guys that will have to wait a long time. I used to like Andre but he's one of those guys that is maybe a tad less than HOF.

My friend Chris is a big Rams fan but he has slightly turned on them due to Martz and the way Warner was run out of town. In regards to the OK St. tourney games, there was something about those that I can't really consider classic. Possibly because I think you have to do more than score in the 60s, I dunno.

    NFL Week 12

Let's have a look at the Colts/Ravens game: Kyle Boller....Peyton Manning. Yeah, the Ravens are SOOOO winning that one. It was funny with that Falcons/Saints game. I saw the halftime score and it was 17-6 Falcons. Then in the 4th I saw it again and it was 21-17 Saints and I thought "What the fuck happened there?" Then I kept saying "There is no way in hell the Falcons would lose to the Saints." And sure enough Vick with a TD and it was over. God the Saints suck.

It's all mythical dude, anyone can lay some kind of claim to it. Hell I think even UK has a claim on a football title from 1950 or so (when they beat OU in the Sugar Bowl?). Hell Penn St. outta lay a claim to the 1994 nat. title, who can disprove them? They didn't lose.
  18. I believe it was Rosario that got naked. Why wasn't Angelina as well? Not like she won't get naked too. As far as National Treasure goes, I wanted to see it mainly for the kind of cast it had. A Bruckheimer production starring Cage with Jon Voight, Harvey Keitel, Sean Bean as a heel, the retard kid from Gigli, and Helen of Troy....hell I was intrigued just seeing the poster. Odd for Bruckheimer it is a movie that has somewhat of an action edge while also staying in the PG range. That = money.

South Florida is a curious team really. U of L stomped the shit out of them badly this year, yet I saw them put together a brilliant 4th quarter to take out UAB. UAB is really about the same as Pitt, maybe a little weaker but not much. Where's that game played?

Bears want to sign Jeff George

I never said George was a bum per se, but the guy simply isn't a winning player. One of those guys who argues with the coach and worries about what his stats look like rather than winning the game. He's like that Martel dude in the Replacements, heh.

UK was pretty good under Bear Bryant...in the early 50s. Oh, and they also had a couple of good years in the 70s. And the sorta decent Couch team in 98. Tennessee should beat UK by 4 TDs at home, there was no excuse for being as crap as they were yesterday. I mean do you realize they gave a career day to SHANE BOYD??? Do you know how bad Boyd is? He was Jared Lorenzen's BACKUP! I will say this about UK....I think they held U of L to fewer points than anyone including Miami. U of L scored 28 on them, 1st game. U of L has a real schitzo defense. We can shut people down (UK, UNC, Cincy) or give up a lot of yards (Miami, Memphis, even TCU and Houston). Here is what I don't get though about Boise being ahead of us in the BCS: Who has Boise really beaten? I mean U of L has played Miami tough (who might go to the BCS), beaten an 8-3 Memphis, and utterly maimed a couple of other bowl caliber teams in UNC and Cincy. Sure we've played some jobbers in CUSA but at least we didn't struggle with them like Boise did with San Jose St. for instance.

Heh, two U of L games on this list? That's why ESPN loves us in those mid week games...we bring the money. I'll second the Rams/Panthers game...the most insane game of the playoffs last year. I can't say Pack/Eagles due to the 4th and 26...that was a major fuckup in my book, not a particularly great play. UAB vs. UK was riveting although the result made me puke. Duke/UConn might be a choice though the officiating was atrocious in its Duke bias.

I personally think Auburn hands Miami their asses. Miami is NOT a good team this year. They were crap for 2/3 of the U of L game, they were total crap vs. UNC, and also Clemson. Auburn hasn't been crappy all year. I'm just curious but how does Stephan Lefors' stats compare to Smith, White, Leinart, etc?
