Total switch to High Definition brodcasting?
cabbageboy replied to JJMc's topic in Television & Film
I can't see this happening. Is it possible that eventually there will be two separate formats: those who want HDTV can have it, but those who would rather have cheaper TV and cable can have that too? -
Here's why I am skeptical of the Expos. They just sorta reeked of a team like the 2000 White Sox or the 2001 Mariners. As in one of those teams who wins a bunch in the regular season just to fall flat in the postseason. I tend to doubt that the Reds would have had a chance against the Braves in a series, but maybe I just recall the Reds getting owned by the Braves in the 95 NLCS.

I still can't believe anyone could possibly think getting Nomar is a DOWNGRADE from fucking Alex Gonzalez. I mean, Gonzalez not only made the key error in the Bartman game (which would have prompted me to trade his ass right off the bat), he's also absolutely wretched at the plate. The guy strikes out constantly. As far as the wildcard goes, why not the Cubs? Let's face it, any of those other teams will simply get swept with little fanfare. Padres? Jobbers. Giants? Jobbers with a couple of stars. Phillies? Bleh. Marlins? Sorry, lost too many guys. That said, the Cubs might have a puncher's chance against either the Braves or Dodgers but there is NO WAY they will beat the Cardinals. I've seen enough of their games this year to know that the Cards have it on them in pitching, defense, clutch hitting, base running, and general baseball acumen (i.e. laying down a bunt, going from 1st to 3rd, etc).

I took a look at the final standings in 94 before the strike. Here's how it would have ended up: Montreal would have squashed the Dodgers in the first round, since the NL West was horrid back then (Dodgers were only 2 above .500). Braves would have likely beaten either the Reds or Astros in 4 games or so. Thus, it would have been Expos vs. Braves in the NLCS. In the AL: Yankees squashing the Rangers or some jobber from a truly pathetic AL West (Rangers were 10 under and in 1st!!!). Actually that might not be accurate. The Indians and White Sox would have both gotten in out of the Central and couldn't play each other, so let's say the Sox get the crappy Rangers and Yankees get the Indians. Indians were about a year away, so let's say it was NY vs. Chicago in the ALCS. Who knows what would have happened? Maybe it would have been one of those oddball Series like Indians/Marlins.

I wasn't even trying to do Canadian baiting. I'm just saying that the Expos winning it all wasn't remotely a forgone conclusion. I personally don't think they would have even gotten past the Braves in the NLCS, but it's all speculative.

My dad got Vol. 2 the other day but for some reason I'm not thrilled with the idea of seeing it again. I dunno, that movie didn't quite do it for me somehow. I can't really say I was expecting the level of violence from the first movie (after all, it was Budd, Elle, and Bill himself left), but the whole thing was really long winded and draggy. At first I kinda liked the direction it was going in when she finally meets Bill....then after about 10 mins I started thinking "Okay, enough of this shit...just KILL him." Maybe this needs to be watched back to back? As two movies the first is mostly action and no story, the 2nd is mostly story and sparse action. As far as the pedophile stuff goes....did you not get that the guy's twisted weakness (molesting girls) is what led to him getting killed? It wasn't remotely saying that being a pedophile was a good thing.

You will never hear me bemoan the strike in 1994. I mean we were looking at potentially a 3rd straight Canadian team winning the World Series. I think THAT would have been worse for the game than the strike, heh. Speaking of the Expos, has anyone seen these bullshit ESPN shows about the 94 team? All this stuff about how great they were and how they would have cruised to the Series. What crap. Even if they did manage to beat the Braves in the NLCS (remember this was the first year of the wildcard), which to me is doubtful, the Yankees would have probably smacked them in the World Series. Incidentally, that was Don Mattingly's best chance at a winner. I'd rather ESPN do a documentary about him missing out on the Series, since he's pretty much the only good Yankee to never win one. As far as the strike goes, I didn't get too angry. I wasn't thrilled with the idea of replacement players, but once the real guys got back in 95 I watched it like business as usual.

I think it's due to a lazy eye, he always has that look. Gumbel seemed pretty good from what I saw, but then he's still a very active broadcaster.

How do you think WWE will end the Kane/Lita angle?
cabbageboy replied to DerangedHermit's topic in The WWE Folder
Some of these ideas don't make sense....why would Kane laugh at Lita losing the baby when the whole thing was his idea (i.e. he wanted a child)? I have this deranged idea that Kane could end up turning face in the whole angle. I mean, hell, the guy at least seems to care about the unborn baby. How sad is it that I've been watching Raw mainly for this angle? I always enjoy a bad Kane or UT angle, haha. -
Here's the thing to ponder: How will this do at the box office? Let's face it, the Alien series hasn't been much in years...wasn't the last one in about 1997? And frankly there hasn't been a GOOD Aliens movie since before Predator was even made. Predator isn't really a series, just a couple of movies. And the 2nd one didn't really make much money (though I kinda like it). While there was an audience clamoring for Freddy Vs. Jason, I don't get the sense that many people really give a shit who wins between Alien and Predator.

I too wondered about the legitimacy of Bradshaw's claim of UT beating Bret. I guess UT probably beat a titleless Bret in 1991 or 92, but Bret wouldn't qualify as a great champion at that point, would he? By great champ I think Bret circa Nov. 92-Nov. 97, that era. And during that time period, I don't recall UT ever getting a pinfall over Bret. As far as UT winning at SS goes, I'm for it. Anyone but Bradshaw, that's my motto. Besides, with Orton winning the title from Benoit it's goofy to have the heels go over in both title matches.

It is somehow tough for me to get pumped up over something based on a Dark Horse comic. I never cared for anything Dark Horse. Am I the only one who really doesn't get the appeal of this whole thing? I mean, on paper it looks like a complete mismatch. Predators are ultimate bad asses with all sorts of artillery, capable of wiping out entire mercenary units (and lose to someone like Arnold). The Aliens job out to Sigourney Weaver on a regular basis. I think I'd put my money on Predator.

Recently I was thinking about the whole Carl Lewis anthem thing. Glad they showed it on the show last night. To me, the best Sportscenter teamings are Patrick/Olbermann and Scott/Eisen. I always found Ley/Steiner a bit dry, liked a bit of humor worked in (the bust out laughing notwithstanding).

Oh god, White Castle burgers are the biggest fart burgers around. If they ate 30 of them they'd be on the toilet forever, heh. I was surprised that they didn't do that many fart jokes about the actual burgers, since it would be completely justified in this case. There also needed to be a joke somewhere about W.C. putting drinks in a paper sack instead of an actual drink carrier. They were dining in, so it wouldn't have been H and K, but they could have had a throwaway gag with someone at the drive thru.

This news just broke.... "Fay Wray, the stunning beauty who tamed the legendary beast in King Kong, died Sunday at her Manhattan home; she was 96. According to a close friend, director Rick McKay, Wray passed away quietly, "as if she was going to sleep." Canadian-born but raised in Los Angeles, the diminutive actress (her full name was the exotic Vina Fay Wray) appeared in a number of silent films in the 20s, including Erich Von Stroheim's The Wedding March, which showcased her beauty and brought her larger fame. Other notable films of the era included The Legend of the Condemned opposite Gary Cooper, Josef Von Sternberg's Thunderbolt (the director's first sound film), and The Four Feathers, which introduced her to Merian C. Cooper and Ernest B. Shoedsack, the team that would make King Kong. Though she made a startling 11 films in 1933, Wray will be remembered always and forever as Ann Darrow, an unemployed actress who takes a job in a movie filming on a strange island and finds herself the love object of a giant ape. Mixing sex appeal with vulnerability, and a pair of lungs that wouldn't quit, Wray established herself as the first "scream queen" and the iconic image of her held in Kong's giant fist (in actuality an eight-foot mechanical arm) became one of the most enduring and legendary images in cinema. Alas, Wray's follow-up films were less than memorable, and she left the screen in 1942 to marry writer Robert Riskin (It Happened One Night). She made a return in the 50s in small roles, usually playing a teen ingenue's mother (as she did in Tammy and the Bachelor), but gave up moviemaking by the end of the decade and appeared sporadically on television through the 60s. Her last appearance was in the 1980 TV movie Gideon's Trumpet opposite Henry Fonda. In 1988 she published her autobiography, On the Other Hand, and was the guest of honor at the 1991 ceremony marking the 60th birthday of the Empire State Building; she wrote, "Each time I arrive in New York and see the skyline and the exquisite beauty of the Empire State Building, my heart beats a little faster. I like that feeling. I really like it!" Wray is survived by three children, including daughter Victoria Riskin." Credit: www.imdb.com Can't say it's a huge shock, but sad nonetheless. I need to find my tapes of Kong, Doctor X, Mystery of the Wax Museum, and The Vampire Bat. A festival is in order.

It's funny but I think this could be one of those movies that just kinda makes about 3 million a weekend for a few months. Then we'll look up one day and it's made about 40 million quietly. Either way, it's the perfect movie for DVD. People can hold White Castle parties, get wasted, watch H and K, etc.

3 PPV in 6 weeks Experiment Results for WWE
cabbageboy replied to strummer's topic in The WWE Folder
Vengeance was a better show than GAB, but Vengeance was a show with next to zero marketing it seemed like. The show was tossed together at the end of this 3 PPV deal, and nobody really cared about it. -
If this Bana thing is true, this is going to suck. I've seen the dude in The Hulk and also in Troy, and he is the blandest, most boring actor around today. Seriously, Bond should have all sorts of charisma, yet they hired a guy with less charisma than friggin Timothy Dalton.

Weekend Boxoffice Report July 30-Aug 1
cabbageboy replied to Youth N Asia's topic in Television & Film
I think H and K is pretty much done for out of the gate. It seems like once every 10 years or so I like a movie really well that seemingly makes zilch at the box office. In 1994 it was Ed Wood. I saw that movie two times at the theater and loved it. Absolutely NO ONE cared about that movie when it came out, it made like 2 million the first week. Looks like Harold and Kumar is that movie for 2004. A movie that gets good/great reviews and those who do see it like it a lot, but it's just that no one is going to see it by those numbers. -
I'm amazed that so many people here have worked up such strong thoughts on The Village. After seeing it I had no real impression either way about it. It was kinda like the people in my theater said "Well, he got us again" and then left never to think about it again. The saddest thing to me about the film was the scene with Ivy in the woods. This was actually one of M. Night's stronger scenes for creating suspense, but it had one fatal flaw: It was impossible to create suspense at that point. I mean, we already knew the monsters weren't real. Yeah I know William Hurt said something lame like "In the history book it said there are monsters in the woods" but that was a lamely introduced concept. Which are we supposed to remember more? The monsters being fake, or the minor toss in line of the history book? I remembered the monsters are fake, and thus this whole scene that was so well done just fell flat on its face.
-
M. Night is to some degree a hack though. Let's face it: The man cannot make a movie without some sort of cornball twist. What he does is a modern twist on the William Castle school of carny hype for B grade horror. Castle however at least didn't try to make pretentious statements in his films. Anyway I saw The Village today and I'm still not even sure what I thought of it. I wasn't as revolted as some here, but it was far from great I'll tell you that. H and K Go to WC owns it easy, though that movie is not making ANYTHING this weekend.
-
I said it earlier, but I think Signs is easily M. Night's best movie thus far, though I have yet to see The Village. Signs is the only one of his movies that actually seems like a real MOVIE, not just some punchline or shaggy dog joke. Here in Louisville H and K go to WC got *1/2 in the paper, while The Village got ***1/2. They're completely full of shit however, Harold and Kumar was great. I saw that at a preview last week.
-
Oh god, that ending sounds hideous. I'm still going to see it tomorrow, but if that's true it sounds Matrix Revolutions level lame.
-
Man, what's with all the hate for Signs? I think it's easily M. Night's best movie thus far, though The Village hasn't come out yet. I go in the category of people who don't get the big deal about the Sixth Sense. I mean, the film is simply not watchable after the first viewing. At that point you know the cheesy twist ending (which I called after 10 minutes of the movie). Heh, they even made fun of that movie in 50 First Dates. Unbreakable wasn't too bad I didn't think, and I have to admit that since the film wasn't as hyped I didn't see the ending coming. The whole segment with Willis trying to save the family from the burglars was horrible however.

Heh I was glad to see Kamala tonight. To this date I still sometimes beat on my belly, probably in some residual Kamala mark out moment.
