    Let's Talk About....WrestleMania IV

I've never understood why some people feel that DiBiase should have won the title at this PPV. In WWF terms he had no real credibility as a wrestler at this point, mainly trying to use his money to buy wins or titles. And also I can't imagine them ending a 4 hour+ PPV with a heel title win. Can you imagine a huge tourney like this ending with DiBiase pulling off some sort of screwjob for the title?

Oh, make no mistake about it. UK has to win the SEC tourney. There's just no way this team is going to be in line for an at large bid. Losing to anyone by 40 is embarrassing and add that to the losses to Gardner Webb, San Diego, etc.

Ah, that was the ultra shitty UK that we know from earlier in the season. I figured they would lose tonight but certainly not in historic fashion. I thought it would be a dull 12 point win for Vandy. They were only favored by 3 1/2. U of L put an assbeating on DePaul tonight. Providence is next.

    Let's Talk About....WrestleMania IV

It's funny, but I read all the time about how much better of a show the Clash of the Champions was than WM IV. Having just watched that Clash for the first time in 20 years I can safely say I don't like it anywhere near as well as WM IV. Yes, some of the in ring wrestling is better on the NWA show, but guess what? The booking sucked and it made me roll my eyes as a kid, and made me roll my eyes watching it last week. I mean the NWA gave you Flair and Sting in a "There must be a winner!" title match that went 45 minutes, had judges, and still didn't produce a winner. The WWF gave us Randy Savage over Ted DiBiase in the tourney finals, and the official formation of the Megapowers.

Based on that projection I'd really enjoy a 2nd round game with U of L vs. Butler or IU in a 4/5 game. We still owe Butler one from 2003.

    Let's Talk About....WrestleMania IV

Amen. WM IV has always been one of my favorite shows. It was the first WM when I started watching wrestling in late 1987/early 88. I didn't get the PPV at the time (my parents refused to buy wrestling shows, thus I watched Clash of the Champions) but saw it on VHS later. Sure, the show is long as hell but the lame stuff is at least short for the most part and there's some nice solid matches in the tourney.

The OaO Raw Is Taped thread - 11/2/2008

From what we've already seen Jeff isn't getting the Rey jobber treatment. He's already gotten wins over guys like Umaga and Michaels, also HHH. Rey was getting squashed by Mark Henry and then pulls off a miracle Rumble win, then jobs to Orton (in theory losing his shot) and then didn't actually pin the world champ to win the belt.

    Let's Talk About...

WWE was desperate for some foreign heels after the fall of the Soviet Union. Yokozuna was a Samoan that was masquerading as Japanese. The Quebecers were evil French Canadian mounties. Borga was a Finnish heel. Who the hell would hate Finland? Hell, the Finnish gave those Russian commie bastards all they wanted circa 1939. The big problem I had with Yokozuna's run is that it lasted entirely too long. There was nothing about his act interesting enough to put the belt on him for 10 months. No mic skills at all, ultra boring fat boy matches with 10 minute long nerve holds, etc.

    What songs should be banned?

How is Teen Spirit Nirvana's worst song? Try listening to some of the ultra ragged 2nd half of Incesticide with gems like Beeswax or Hairspray Queen. Anyway, I won't say all Pearl Jam songs should be banned but it's beyond time to ease up on Alive, Evenflow, and Jeremy. I do like the fact that Black is getting more airplay than it used to. In Louisville there's the rock station The Fox and every day at noon they have the "90s at Noon" hour. I don't know what idiots call in to this and request stuff, but I am sick and tired of Alice in Chains being played on there every day. Oh, and I'd also like nearly all Red Hot Chili Peppers singles after One Hot Minute to be retired forever. None of them are all THAT good, yet constantly on the radio.

Eh, both Tenn. and UNC have the same sort of record and TN has a #2 SOS and UNC is #3 in SOS, so it could go either way. Still, Tennessee did lose to UK so I really do wonder about them. I think that should be an "Are you for real?" barometer this year. If you beat UK, you can qualify as being for real....if you lose to them, you aren't. After that G'Town/Nova game last night I am convinced the Big East is trying every corrupt tactic possible to get the Hoyas to win the conf. and get roughly a 2 seed. This is now the 2nd win they have literally been handed by the refs (the other being the goal tending non call vs. WVU). Watching it live I actually did think it was a foul since the Nova moron bumped Wallace and did in fact lead to him falling out of bounds. Why the hell even get near the guy in that situation? He's 80 feet from the basket. Still...what a lame call to hand G'Town a game.

WWE General Discussion - February 2008

Marty needs to calm down. All this means is that come Sunday Shawn will just get that job back from Jeff. HBK always has to get that job back. And since HHH always eventually will get his job back Jeff is screwed either way, since Jeff beat him in their last encounter. So if HBK doesn't beat Jeff, HHH will.

    Impact spoilers for 2/14

They won't even put the tag belts on the Motor City Machine Guns, why would they put the belts on the jobber connection of Curry Man and Shark Boy? This whole Joe contract signing angle with him never signing it reminds me of Taz in ECW circa 1999, except that was never actually televised. By that I mean Taz kept putting off signing his new ECW contract in real life, then finally left for the WWF.

The OaO Raw Is Taped thread - 11/2/2008

Interesting show tonight. Jeff/HBK was a good match and you gotta love the anti TNA clean finish there. Also curious to see what they do with Jericho/JBL now that Jericho beat him clean in the middle of the ring. It's going to be so weird to see HHH win the EC at the PPV after not being on the 2 Raws before it. As far as the Burchill/Katie Lea angle goes, it really wasn't so bad....at least not so far. They could do some interesting Scarface type booking with them if they insist on this sort of angle. Have some dude be into Katie and Paul wants to kick his ass. Is he being a protective brother, or is something else going on? That sort of thing.

TNA Comments which don't warrant a thread

See, I could buy Devine being the jobber lackey if they hadn't put the belt on him. Putting the belt on him was a mistake...Lethal should have just had the title going in, or maybe they could have stayed with the "Team 3D holds the belt hostage" storyline. Sure, Devine would be fine with being a lackey since he was such a jobber in the X Division anyway that he had no upward mobility. But now he HAS the belt that he would have never won otherwise, so why would he want to see it rendered meaningless? There was probably an interesting storyline in this somewhere, and had the title not already been on the line it might have paid off with Devine turning on the Dudleys in order to save his own belt.

Haha, the funny thing about that is I hear all the time how good the Knockouts stuff is in TNA and that is Mantel's booking. Meanwhile Russo is booking the other 90% of the show that gets trashed. Anyway, I wondered about the X title in that match and exactly what was going on with it. What I don't get is why didn't Devine object to any of this? He was in a position where winning the match meant losing his belt since it would be abandoned. But if his side lost, then he lost the belt anyway. WTF???

    Against All Odds Results

Yeah I do think TNA should have made it better known that the barbed wire match was not going to be in SC, but then I guess they risk not selling a few more tickets. Of course they ended up pissing people off so I don't know if it would have worked either way.
  17. Yeah I think Nash will get in, though he really needs that run to the Finals and the title to really cement his status. The irony of those upset picks is that Butler is a team I think can go quite far, since they tend to play much better against major conf. teams than against their own league (who all have them scouted). I'd almost advise them to fall down to a 6 seed or so and avoid a 1, since I think they can play with the 2 and 3 seeds. As far as Tennessee goes, I think they got over the hump last year in terms of being an early round upset. When they lose it'll be either Sweet 16 or Elite 8. On a similar note, what are some real dark horses come tourney time?

    Box Office Report 2/08-2/10

Maybe Nia Vardolos in My Big Fat Greek Wedding? Though I'm not sure if her character was exactly meant to be the "ugly chick" but maybe more just average looking.

TNA Comments which don't warrant a thread

Having read these results I am confused by the exact stips of the 6 man street fight with the Dudleys. I know that the Machine Guns and Machismo won but what I don't get is this: Is Lethal once again the actual X champ or is this another "He took the belt" bullshit angle? Further, how does this stip with the Dudleys actually work? As in how long do they have to lose all this weight before they get fired? In addition, didn't Devine got royally screwed in this entire scenario? If his team lost then I guess he lost the belt. If his team won then his belt would be disbanded! What is his incentive to even show up for the PPV? He's fucked either way. Even further, why do the MCMG even give a shit about the X Division? They can't just go after Styles and Tomko for the tag belts?

Of those teams who can really do anything in the tourney though? Wisconsin isn't that good, maybe 2nd round. If Purdue ends up getting overseeded they might be a good candidate for a 1st round upset. I'd like to think IU can do something but they have yet to prove they can beat anyone, though they have chances upcoming vs. MSU, Wisconsin, etc. Michigan St. is the wild card out of the Big 10. If they get rolling they could be an Elite 8 type team, but if they throw up a clunker outing could also be a 1st round upset. The Big 10 isn't as bad as the SEC (or even most of the ACC not named UNC and Duke), but I can't see anyone from the conf. going to the FF.
  21. And it won't be either way....I think Edge vs. UT should definitely be the WM main event, especially after the way they screwed UT and Batista with the midcard title match last year.
  22. I don't know, maybe if Ichiro adds another 1000 hits. 2500 hits plus his years in Japan would probably be enough to get him in. Would this set a precedent for Japanese stars similar to the Negro League players getting into the HOF? Thing is, black players weren't allowed in the league, whereas Japanese players just weren't scouted much in terms of being serious MLB players until the mid 90s. As far as the #1 vs. 16 question, it might happen some day but it would have to be some mediocre #1 seed that came out of a conf. having a down year, and one that didn't have much actual physical talent that could take over. Purdue in 1996 is a good example of this. #1 seed, down Big 10, didn't really have anybody. I know some people the past couple years have been all over Memphis' case, saying they would be the first #1 to lose, but I don't see it. They at least have enough actual talent to carry them to a few wins. The question I have along those lines is this: Who is the highly ranked team most likely to be upset in the first 2 rounds? I think Georgetown might be, ditto Stanford.

Ah, but I was a huge Bulldog fan so I desperately wanted him to beat Vader in 1993. Besides that I've simply never been a fan of long term heel champions. It does deeper than that anyway. As a 13-14 year old in 1993 I saw these fat fucks like Vader and Yoko with the belts and to me these were the sort of guys that Hogan simply would have beaten in the 1980s. When Yoko actually beat Hogan that was a real "Whoa, WTF?" kind of moment for me. Yoko was the typical fat heel that Hogan would have gone through like a knife through butter from 1984-87. Ironically enough I was proven right about Vader being such a heel since Hogan beat his ass in WCW.

Georgetown has a big problem come tourney time. Namely this: Where are the points coming from? Cause I really don't see many scoring options on that team. As much as I'm amused that Purdue is doing well (it at least helps U of L's RPI and makes that Dec. loss look better) what does it say about the Big 10 if this team might win the conference? Is the Big 10 going back to the mid 90s when mediocre Purdue teams were winning the conference and getting beat in the 2nd round?

Yeah boy, U of L put the beating on Georgetown tonight. I kinda figured on a win tonight since G'Town isn't really that great this year, but it's still a win over a top 10 team. U of L's D is up there with the best in the country.
