No kidding. Michael Kay on his radio show here in NY has been so vehmently against it, especially about how "fair" it is for Jeter, ARod, Damon and Bernie to be "away" from the team for this long. He also asked about the Oriole pitchers as well, how it was "wasting" a year of having Leo Mazzone as the pitching coach because he won't have a spring to be with them Its gotten to the point, where even though I agree with Kay's sentiments (that this is a half baked, thrown together, uncessary marketing ploy) he is going so overboard that A) I am now rooting for the WBC to be an overwhelming success and B) The Yankees to win the Wo... Okay, I can't say it, but you know what I mean...

What, going brunette for a roll doesn't count? Okay I know that was bad, but hey I had to say it That really is pathetic when you think about it. Basically its saying that an beautifull actress "plain Jane-ing" herself is Oscar Worthy on its own, let alone what kind of job they do in the movie Kind of goes with their "affliction" love-fest as well. I mean it's one thing if the role really was deserving of awards and praise, but its almost become so cliched now that it comes off as, well, patronizing towards those who share the affliciton of the character that the actor/actress wins it for

Sad part about this, they guy still hasn't answered any of my points in the thread on that board. Except my point about Philly being an overated sports town because they talk Eagles non-stop, even if there hasn't been Eagle news in months. Basically the guy said that THAT makes Philly a great sports town because it "doesn't kiss up to the allmighty MLB" Everyone here is right, just an anti-MLB troll. I mean I even asked him to defend the fact that ESPN Radio makes a national issue over Alex Rodriguez being so hated, yet ignoring Jeff Gordon, Roger Federer or even Triple H who are in the same boat of being at the top of their sports (and so-called in Triple H's case) yet either universally loved or universally hated (mostly hated) by both the fan base and their peers. And if baseball was treated so shabbily by the public shouldn't the "playa hating" towards ARod be a complete non story and not covered at all?
-
Is that directed to me or the other poster? Personally I don't give a damn what the guy likes or doesn't like The guy came to the board asking Why baseball is so damn popular in the NYC-Boston regions where its 4th, maybe 5th behind the NHL everywhere else in the country, I'm trying to prove that baseball is still top 2, maybe top 3 across the board in the country and shouldn't be lumped in with niche sports like tennis, NASCAR, golf, ect My point also is that the guy is being too bull headed and acting like a troll with his comments

Generic "Public Domain" instrumentals are good for cheap, quick and dirty things thrown together if you have a lack of thought process. And WCW was such a company through the years I think at one point Chris Jericho came out to ESPN Baseball Tonight music! (not the main theme but one of the bridges they use) So its even doubtfull that the WWF originated the piece, usually they copyright everything they do in-house

WOAH! I go on vacation and this is what I come back to!
Steve J. Rogers replied to Steve J. Rogers's topic in Site Feedback
Yeah I would if I had the time to write anything other than one line NFL picks every week! Thanks for the offer but at this point I'd be very sporadic to the point where half the year would go by without a column Steve -
Difference, William Hung has still yet to realize what a doofus he was and thinks he really is a "talented singer"

I've seen a book last year on the Herzog era called "Whitey's Boys" Don't ask me what it was doing in a bookstore in the NYC area though... = Lets see some more... 1930's Gashouse Gang had its fair share, Dizzy Dean sure was an icon for alot of years especially when he was a national broadcaster the last few decades of his life. The DiMaggio-McCarthy Yanks get alot of love as that really was the beginings of the Yankees being THE YANKEES. Great book came out a few years ago about the 39 team in particular BTW called Legend In The Making by Richard Tofel. Premesis being that the 1939 title was the one that put the Yanks ahead to stay in the All-Time Championships won category which solidified the case as the dominant franchise of all-time 1940's. Cards really dominated the war years and I really can't give the Yanks much props since DiMaggio was in the war. Only books and historic relevance are on 41 (DiMagg streak, Williams ASG and Williams .407) 47 (Robinson debut and one hell of a WS) and 49 (Great race between the Yanks and Red Sox, probably the real start of the rivalry when you think about it) 1920's Gotta give it to Yanks and Philly A's 1910's Probably the NY Giants, Philly A's thrown in there, both early though. Red Sox of the Speaker, Ruth, Hooper vintage 1900's McGraw and Mathewson and NYC's first big time franchise. Philly A's as well as Mr. Mack started his run

That makes me feel OLD! Thanks, and I'm less than 400 days away from the big 30! My God, I can start telling kids about how I saw the great Mike Schmidt in the twilight of his glorious career and get "Mike who?" Hell with seeing stars of the 70's wrapping up, I can tell kids I saw the entirty of soon to be HOFers careers! Like, "Man that Tony Gwynn fellow, he could sure hit" "Uh, Tony Gwynn? The guy on ESPN that looks more like Tony Soprano or Tony Siragusa?" "Lord I'm much too young to feel THIS DAMN OLD"-Garth Brooks Anyway the 1950's have to be the NYC trio of Yankees, Dodgers and Giants The 60's, probably 1961 Yanks, the Cards from 64-68, 69 Mets get alot of love, Dodgers as well 70's the A's, Orioles, Reds, the last of the Clemente years Pirates and later the "We Are Family" Pirates 80's, Cards get some love with the Whiteyball era, 86 Mets were probably the most dominate team for one season, course things got very hairy that postseason, 80 Phillies get alot of love 90's Probably the 98 Yanks, but will all the Anti-Yankee sentiment in the last decade or so I'm not sure if they have staying power. The idea was always for Hunter to return at the PPV, hence the ad campaign built around his return. The idea was changed at almost literally the last minute. The plan was also always for Hunter to come back, win the Rumble and take the title at Mania. Whats even funnier (Well I guess it was more cost effective not to change it so its understandable) that the PPV's graphics still had a "Sledgehammer" theme in it despite no HHH and no use of a sledgehammer in the PPV!

Most forgettable stint in a promotion
Steve J. Rogers replied to King Kamala's topic in General Wrestling
You know, even though it ended up with two titles, an epic historic run at the Rumble, a red hot ME feud with Savage and classic matches with most of the main stars and some lesser ones, you might have to put Flair's 18 months in WWF in the WTF category as it was a quick run and he was right back to where he really always should have been It was like Fran Tarkention's days as a Giant to put it into a sports context Steve -
I was just guessing as to a reason Owen wasn't giving a quick hotshot face run. The HBK/HHH stuff is well know, and I've never heard anything about Austin, but considering some of the stuff Austin did pull through the yeares it wouldn't shock me if he didn't want to share the top face spotlight with Owen, even if it was a brief winter time run that would be long over by the time Austin went over at WM

Rise and Fall of the World Bodybuilding Federation
Steve J. Rogers replied to EdwardKnoxII's topic in General Wrestling
True, but ESPN and the like had to treat it as a relatively serious event for it to last and reach the average sports fan. I remember the 2nd week, a game with the LA team winning in the closing seconds, maybe overtime on a long pass. The ESPN co-anchor said something to the effect of wow, the crowd's excited, the players are excited, maybe this league has some potential...I could just hear the other anchor getting an earful through his earpiece, because he came back with some smart remark how the receiver catching the ball didn't last in the NFL. It wasn't the NFL and never pretended to be. Their hyprocrisy was proven when the Arena league and World league began getting national airings regularly, and were promoted by networks including ESPN as "a fun alternatives to the NFL during its offseason" when the XFL was called garbage. Most of the bad play took place in the first two weeks. No random 50 NFL players could be thrown together and be polished, and when the XFL couldn't have polished teams-including some players that had been out of the game-in just a couple of weeks they were blasted for being second-rate. The other problem was that the mainstream media also seemed to treat it as a TV program rather than a sports telecast. Case in point TV Guide put it on its Top 50 Worst TV Shows of All Time list. Please, there are a slew of sports related programing that can be put over XFL's televisied products. WCW Thunder comes to mind, NBC had an alternative to Wide World Of Sports called "Games People Play" that looked like the America's Funniest Home Video equvilant to Wide World Of Sports. MLB had a disaster of a project called "The Baseball Network" that can rank up there as a major sports programing blunder Steve -
To be technical this was the RAW after the D-X PPV where Owen attacked Shawn after the main event (HBK vs Shamrock) What should have been Owen's finest hour though was tarnished by D-X's (and probably Austin's) political power not allowing Owen to go over HBK, or even HHH cleanly, for the title. With all the heat drained from him, Owen spent his final year as a mid-card stable member/tag team partner/gimmicked heel Steve

Man cries at a Wrestling Convention
Steve J. Rogers replied to UZI Suicide's topic in General Wrestling
No, I was pointing out the popular opinion of NASCAR in the mainstream media and why it, wrestling and rodeo are always lumped together and why in places like New York they are either given "Stupid Red Necks love that" or "Guilty Pleasure" status Wally is a grade A jerk by the way, (and was fired soon after, but not because of the comments, raitings for the show were not great and the station wanted a more national sound so they brought in Steven A. Smith) but that opinion about the sport is the prevelant one among the media here, and therefore NASCAR gets hardly any mention unless the host is an admitted fan of the sport, and that number is only one here in the market Steve -
Who came up with that gimmick/angle?
Steve J. Rogers replied to Damaramu's topic in General Wrestling
Whose idea was it for Rocky Miavia to go from Blue Chipper to a walking parody of the modern day "self absorbed" athlete? From all "mainstream" accounts (Rock books, interviews) They told Duane to be more like Duane -
Man cries at a Wrestling Convention

And events such as this put it right next to rodeos and NASCAR. Just to show you NASCAR's acceptance in major markets' mainstream sports here is an exchange from this year on New York City's 1050 ESPN Radio CALLER: [On that weekend's Daytona 500] Now pay attention to the last 10 laps...(cut off and hung up on by the host Wally Mathews) WALLY: Why? Didn't Earnhardt buy it on the last lap? In essence, no one cares unless there is a real death and those who like it for what it is are redneck, red state living, tobbacco chewing, Waylon Jennings lovin' bare cracked, trailer park living, ect (fill in with other red neck sterotype you wish) hick Steve -
Man cries at a Wrestling Convention
Steve J. Rogers replied to UZI Suicide's topic in General Wrestling
Do people get hurt in wrestling? Yes, but no more than a stunt man does. The only difference is a stunt man has a union that ensures he is unlikely to end up with long term disabilities as a result of his line of work. Another difference People know who Terry Funk, Mick Foley, Steve Austin, Rocky Maivia, Ric Flair, Hulk Hogan, ect... are Sadly IMO and probably yours, stuntmen are among the long, long, long list of unknown collaborators on movies and TV shows (gaffers, wardrobe and makeup, tech guys for special effects, guys behind the cameras, ect...) that only get mentioned in the credits of a movie, and usually without any kind of recongition of who they were stunting for (which really would be a cool thing to know without say hearing about it on a DVD commentary) So there inlies why someone would care more about the injuries suffered by a pro-wrestler, which often is available for viewing as it happens) than those suffered by a stunt guy, which is often spoken about long after the fact as footnotes on the production. And yes for every Owen Hart there are probably a slew more like Kevin (guy who played Aries on Xena) Smith in the world of stunt men so at the end of the day, wrestling is a much better profession in that regard -
Maybe if she was under the influence or had just gotten into a fight with Dungy... Interesting, I saw a post on another board say that if this was the other way around. Where the girl was found dead/dying after the kid was out walking for 10 minutes or something, the kid would be in some serious legal trouble, hell considering who the kid was it probably whould be hushed up but whispers would follow the kid, and Dungy, for the rest of his life. So the poster said he (I think) wouldn't be surprised if she wound up being hauled in on a murder charge Steve
-
My point is more, why broadcast speculatory comments. If they did for Eddie Guerrero, why not for this kid Personally I would find it just as disgusting and offensive to go on the air and say it, or even speculate on the socital impact of being a son of a famous coach or whatever, (strains the culture of coaching has on families, ect) But I'm pointing out a major double standard when it comes to someone in a fringe segment of entertainment which is considered no better than porn and the kid of a major NFL head coach Steve

Last month pro wrestler Eddie Guererro was found dead in a hotel room. Mainstream media talk show hosts automatically drum up the "steroids, drugs, ect" rant even before a toxiologly report is out. Hell most of them spouted their speculations without even knowing that Guererro battled drug and alcohol addiction for years, and was even fired from the WWF for it (as well as getting in a drunk driving accident that nearly killed him) so while it probably was an accurate speculation, there was no good reason to go on the air and start putting two and two together So a 18 year old black teen, living outside Tampa is found dead in his apartment. And just because he is Tony Dungy's son there is no speculation, there is no "come on, put two and two together" there is just simple condolences, the "well that puts things into perspective" speechs Yes it would be highly irresponsible to do so, to make comments relative to the line of thinking about a kid who grows up without a father for the most part in his life (hell a father who works in another STATE) and speculation that drugs could be involved, but the fact is that the Guerrero story was met with all sorts of speculation without any sort of "Oh gotta feel bad for the Guerrero family, and he had young kids as well..." so there is a double standard when it comes to coverage of the sudden passing of people I swear the media stinks so bad it makes me wonder why in the hell I ever wanted to become one of them

There was one that I wonder what they were thinking When Dennis Miller joined the Monday Night Football crew, SNL HAD to do a bit. Well Will Farrell ended up doing Dan Fouts, and I guess Fouts is such a straight, no frills, no schtick commentator the only thing Will ended up doing was making Fouts "Captain Obvious" where his comments were the most basic comments of football. Like "Well if the quarterback is able to give the ball to the running back, or throws it to a receiver or tight end, they will score a touchdown!" Well the audience must have been filled with shills that night because it got quite a few laughs. Either than or they all had no clue who Dan Fouts is and thought that really is what Fouts is like Steve

Glad to see he is still principled. Link... It was more about the US bomb testing off an island close to Puerto Rico than being anti-war On the flip side though, he would be getting ripped in the NYC media for being a "me-first" guy and a "distraction/cancer in the clubhouse" so he is trying to nip a potential problem in the bud

Right now, Warner Wolf has been really grating on me, Saturday mornings on WEPN 1050 ESPN Radio in New York This guy was a legend doing CBS's local news TV sports, but seems to be clueless doing a sports radio show Actually worse than Dan Patrick in terms of sounding like he is having a conversation with himself, and constantly screwing up facts, and over-use of tired "trueisms" that have proven to be untrue Only reason ABC radio picked him up was because he was fired from CBS

Ah just thought I'd start a PPV thread once...
