How Reggie White's death ties into steriods
Steve J. Rogers replied to Steve J. Rogers's topic in Sports
No because I didn't want that thread to denigrate into a topic on steriods, this is more a steroid thread than a Reggie White thread based soley on my reaction to the news By the way, I will post this to the thread, but apparantly "sleep apnea" was the reason for the respiratory failure according to his wife. Never heard he had it before, I have heard of it but never with his name attached to it (i.e. I've heard PSA ads for awarness and treatments but never in the "Hi, I'm Reggie White, and I have sleep apnea..." variety) If that really is the case it would boost that cause though Anyway, here is the Fox Sports article Former NFL star White dies -
-One time Goldberg almost no-sold a shot to the groin, it took a while untill it registered that if he didn't sell it his manhood would be in question -I always loved this hillarious juxtapostion of Giant completely no-selling the Diciples's Apoclypse. Basically Brutus got his arm around Giant's neck, tried to sit down but Giant wouldn't budge so there Brutus is dangling like a moron. And then a few months later Big Show selling an Austin stunner like a pro. Just funny when it comes to no selling or selling a guy's finisher even if its identical Steve

He had a career after "Suburban Commando"? Maybe not much of a movie career, but he was an exec producer on Frasier, so I don't think he was exactly crying for work... Different guy

It might be more of a not liking the "self-hating, self-absorbed" "New York Style" humor where every single minute aspect of regular life can be dissected to the point of insanity NBC did nearly turn it down because it was "Too New York" I guess in a way saying that people tune to TV for "escapism" and not want to see 30 minutes of how bizzare the "little things" can become, even if it has a "realistic" approach to it Steve

I emailed WrestlingDeacon a question about famous cameos for his next 411 article. Basically after seeing Jimmy Cagney's cameo in "The Seven Little Foys" as George M. Cohan, sort of a "repayment" of Eddie Foy Jr's "cameo" in Cagney's Cohan biopic "Yankee Doodle Dandy" Foy Jr played his famous stage comedian father in Yankee Doodle in a scene with Cagney, and when Bob Hope was brining the Eddie Foy story to the screen in 1955 he asked Cagney to do a cameo as Cohan. James did it for free because Foy and his family would lend a helping hand to struggling actors, including one James Cagney Anyway I quickly thought of some of the better cameos that were straight apperances, not "Hey thats SO AND SO!" cameos almost for the sake of them in most comedies and/or spoofs. Basically cameos that are "integral" to the story. And the only two that I came up with off the top of my head (late night and I was rushing) was James Caan/Abe Vigoda/Gianni Russo at the end of GodFather II and Will Smith in Jersey Girl Then I started to question, what the hell constitutes a cameo in the first place? Especially after looking at the DVD cover of "The Seven Little Foys" and next to Bob Hope in billing order is James Cagney, followed by Jerry Mathers. Yup the Beaver is in the film. One thing though, Mathers appears in only one sequence as Foy's oldest son at age 5 (or so) Plus the film came out in 1955, Leave It to Beaver doesn't debut untill 1957! In other words Paramount's home video department is hyping a cameo apperance by a Hollywood Icon and a "Before They Were Stars" appearance of a child actor and both were in probably a combined 10 minutes of screen time! Anyway the Mathers billing made me question what actually does qualify as a cameo? If Paramount bills Mathers for a movie made before he became a household name does that qualify as a Mathers "cameo" Ditto with say Robert Duvall as "Boo Radley" in "To Kill a Mockingbird" I mean even though its Duvall's very first movie apperance, but he would go on to be an acclaimed and accomplished star Another problem with cameo designation is Bruce Campbell in both Spider-Man movies. Sure fans of Bruce and the Ramis will reconize Bruce and go "HEY ASH!" when they see his apperances, but to the majority of people watching the movies will probably just think that Bruce is a pretty good character actor, and if they realize that the snooty theatre bouncer in Spidey 2 was the ring announcer in the first Spidey movie will think that he is a good friend of a high ranking person on production. Their assumptions would be correct, Bruce is a damn good character actor and he is a good friend of the director, but is the Bruce Campbell name that well known outside of the sci-fi/fantasy/horror genre for his apperances to be considered an official "cameo" I'm leaning towards no in that regard Well anyway, any thoughts on the whole topics of cameos? Steve

Ever notice how the littlest thing will cause a heel turn/break up of a tag team/group/manager-wrestler. ect Forget slow burning a turn, the simplest miscomunication can lead to a full blown heel turn. I mean it makes you wonder. For example, couldn't wrestler A point out on a tape of the show to wrestler B that he clearly meant to hit wrestler C with the chair and C just moved out of the way. But NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO it becomes INSTANT FEUD! I'm not really counting Russo-esque turns from out of nowhere where you might be able to figure out why something is going on, but things where you know what happened its just for the stupidest reason imaginable And I'm not counting reasons for feuding like Kane-Jericho's coffee incident or Booker T-Edge feuding over a shampoo commercial as there were no turns involved Steve

What the hell consitiutes a "cameo"
Steve J. Rogers replied to Steve J. Rogers's topic in Television & Film
To me, a cameo is an uncredited, often unpaid appearance by a celebrity, although the reverse may not be true (eg James Earl Jones in Star Wars). I think it may depend on the director/producers though... Using that logic though would sort of negate Cagney then as he was credited in the movie's credits and even in the "poster credits" it reads "...and James Cagney as "George M. Cohan" " I don't think Eddie Foy Jr was credited for Yankee Doodle Dandy but I really don't know how well known any of the Seven Little Foys were post 1920-ish, they worked in the business for years but I don't think movie goers in 1942 were saying "HEY THATS EDDIE FOY JR!" Maybe they saw a resemblance between the actor and the real Eddie Foy but I don't know if the father-son connection could have been made With Jones are you refering to his voice in Star Wars? Or in the up coming Revenge of the Sith? The former his voice is in EVERY scene Vader has and cameos are usually just one scenes. He has 4 lines in ROtS which would probably be considered a cameo I guess also how do you define "celebrity" might have something to do with it as well. Case in point again with the Duvall/Mathers cases. Both would go on to become someone, but at the point of their small apperances they were unknowns. Or if someone was famous back in the day and their star diminished greatly with the passage of time, does that mean their cameos are no longer considered cameos? I.e. Christian Slater hasn't done much in recent years, so I'm sure there are now new Star Trek fans wonder just why do people get giddy when they see the scene in Star Trek 6 where this officer tells Sulu that Star Fleet has ordered them to find the Enterprise Speaking of Trek, there is another category of cameos! Shoehorning enough characters from the TV program into a film project has been a staple of TV to film! Steve -
You're correct on all accounts, including the retard quip. Savage no-sold all of Warrior's finishers for the false-finish at the end, too. On a side note, Hogan didn't kick out of Lesnar's F-5, nor was in a position to do so. Angle became the first guy to kick out of Lesnar's finisher at Wrestlemania XIX. How so? He sold the mvoes but kicked up before three. I don't recall him not acting hurt or jumping to his feet or any similar nonsense. Someone kicking up from someone's finisher is hardly "no selling". Actually in some corners of smarkdom it is. Thats why Savage's "Reviving Elbow" got the moniker, thats why Hogan and Sid lost a ton of respect from fans when Sid had to kick out of the leg drop at WM because Papa Shango came down late Kicking out at 2 can be a career/move killing moment

Yep, good win for Foley here. WOW! Did the guy actually watch the tape he reviewed? My bet is he probably cribbed it from second hand info Steve

How about the poster children of the steroid age, especially in light of a "smoking gun" in the Bonds/Balco case Barry Bonds Mark McGwire Sammy Sosa Don't laugh, some say Orlando Cepeda's drug bust was the reason writers kept him out of the HOF Steve

Yes I posted this in two folders, but I need an answer this weekend I'm making a set list for a wedding rehersal and going WAY over the 80 minute level, anyone know if there are CDRs or CDRWs with more space on them? Its something that should be seamless which is why it should be on one disc (I don't have a clue if they are going to be using a CD changing stereo as their audio equipment and I don't want to find out) Thanks Steve

A few off hand -Jeff Hardy Especically late in his WWF run. The guy had NO tone or definition, looked more like a dope smoking slacking teen than someone with multiple tag titiles and a Euro title to his name -Raven Hate to say it as he is a legend, but Scott Levy is in the same category, especially when you can't SEE his "ripped" features -Zach Gowen Never mind that he has one leg, but same category, just doesn't look like a guy who belongs in the ring -Maven Got a good look, but is one of those that you'd be "ya gotta be kidding me" if you found him in a dark alley Steve

Why could you do it through AIM program, but not through AOL itself? You would think it would be more accessable sharing with AOL members than people who aren't neccessarilly AOL members Thanks Steve
-
How do you share files through regular AOL?
Steve J. Rogers replied to Steve J. Rogers's topic in Technology
Ah, yes I understand that, but just sending a picture and such, basically stuff I could email if I knew the person's actuall email or something Basically why in AIM can you send someone say an Excel spreadsheet or a Word Document but not directly in AOL's IM Steve -
For a few years now, two radio hosts on NYC's sports radio station 1050 ESPN Radio, Tom Keegan and Wally Mathews INSIST that Ben Affleck wears a rug. Don't worry, I think their knoweldge of current pop culture is just by listening to gossip reports on the radio/TV or bulleted ones in the papers but they seem to think that they can "just tell" about people Obviously they are Affleck-Bashers so I think thats where it comes from, "Hey we don't like the guy, guy's hair never moves, we don't like guys who wear rugs so AFFLECK WEARS A RUG!" Anyone have a strange actor rumor that tops that? Not couting all the "rumors" about contract era Hollywood where the studios put out all sorts of "tidbits" that have seemed to morph into "facts" over the decades Steve

Obviously no one here gets the fact that this is based on a book with the same title that tears down the notion of "purity in HS football" especially in a factory like Texas http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detai...395268?v=glance I don't know how "toned down" the movie is, but if the source material is adhered to, its not going to be "Remeber The Titans" or even "Varsity Blues"/"The Program"

Ric Flair, a 16 time World champion?
Steve J. Rogers replied to theintensifier's topic in General Wrestling
err, Lennox Lewis?? Thanks for correcting me, but Lennox is never going to be mentioned in the same breath as Ali or the Real Rock And the fact that boxers in all eras tend to come out of retirement I had forgoten that he HAD retired with the belt BTW, Rocky never fought again, he perished a few years after in a plane crash Steve -

Why would that worry me? I didn't want this to be a "lets bash these two idiots" thread and explain why they foster things they hear about without any hint of doing any fact checking Steve

Ric Flair, a 16 time World champion?
Steve J. Rogers replied to theintensifier's topic in General Wrestling
"Hey, at least I've been IN POSITION to lose 16 WHOOOOOOOOOOOOO! WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT TITLES!" On a more serious note, how does multiple reigns diminish someone's legacy? Do you say Ali doesn't deserve his "The Greatest" title because he never retired champion (Rocky Marchiano was the only one) hence he lost at the end of all his reigns (expect for the one he got stripped of because of his draft dodging) Especially does it matter when all the matches are booked, so the wrestler/tag team has been THAT popular (in both heel and face way) or that much of a back stage politicer that they have been in position to be on top for a long time, is that such a bad thing? Steve -
Plus I like to see archived list of stuff released allready (doesn't matter if it goes back a month or year or whatever) Specifically looking for box set releases Thanks

Trying to get wish lists together and I'd like to know when certain stuff is coming out, or if they are out Mostly sports books but looking for all things book related. Just looking for a site that would tell me what is due to be released in a given week Steve

Movies that people say they hate... without seeing
Steve J. Rogers replied to a topic in Television & Film
Kevin Smith's movies get lumped into this category, probably more so than any other single director (other than Michael Moore) Especially his latest Jersey Girl which got bashed because of the Bennifer backlash Steve -
I think right now the closest you are going to get is the Internet Hall, don't have time to run the link but its around somewhere Too much politicking, even with the Fed specific ones (NWA/WCW, the WWF, ect) Plus wrestling can be more subjective due to A) NO ONE really keeps track of "official" stats (Does Flair have 16 championships? Or is it 17? 15? 20?) and lord knows what win-loss records are (Goldberg lost non-TV matches before his "vaunted" streak) B) What one man thinks as crap another man thinks is gold. People might hate Hogan, HHH, Rock, Austin, Flair, ect so much that they will fail to reconigize that they belong in the pantheon, or they might think the candiency of a Chris Benoit or a Chris Jericho might be a cut below HOF worthy Plus, how do you weigh time spent in the major promotions, or how do you define MAJOR promotions. For example was ECW actually considered a major promotions by certain standards? To some it was (off shoot of the NWA, albeit brief they did have a national TV spot, aired national PPVs, they did things that affected the WWF and WCW, they had merchandicing tie ins (shirts, action figures, DVDs, ect) and to some it wasn't (never got beyond "fringe popularity" so some may consider it the Hockey of Pro-Wrestling, never did get its financial situation sorted out, ect) So I think its a very, very hard thing to pull off completely Steve
