WWE General Discussion - September 2007

Anyone think that they should bring Rock back to promote his next film and do a quick program putting over MVP? Eh, just a thought I guess.

General attitudes of people in the business towards others, especially

Seriously, why would he say that? Any musician worth his salt can't deny that Eric Clapton was successful at what he did. Not to answer for Milky, but its kind of the same reason a pro wrestler like Steve Austin and The Rock became popular. Not because they play the "I respect you" card, but because they think that they are the best and any one else is beneath them. No matter how great they really were or still are. Since a person has that uber-self confidence they'll tear down everyone just so they look better, and probably gain fans because of their "I don't give a shit" attitude. Wow. That has to be one of the most idiotic things I've ever heard. Please expand on this theory. Not so sure about that. The music industry is a dog-eat-dog world, while sure there are nice people out there, but generally its all very ego driven. I mean its a way to get attention, and music artists, or any entertainer, at their core are attention whores. So what better way to get fame, fortune and members of the opposite (or same if you are so inclined) to throw themselves at you than being a music artist.

Comments which don't warrant a thread.

Garth Brooks came out of retirement long enough to set the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart record of highest ranking debut, with "More Than A Memory" sitting at the top spot. Its reign though lasted just one week and it dropped to 8th! Probably due to lack of a tour and actual album (its part of a greatest hits package due out in November) to help promote it.

Heh, the original reason for this came from an argument I had with someone who thinks less of Billy Joel because he (Joel) ran down Grand Funk Railroad once when talking about playing a venue that The Beatles played but later on Grand Funk played, to which I replied that its the norm in the business, so even if you are a fan of Grand Funk it shouldn't be that big of a deal that you would not like that artist. Another poster, whose girlfriend is a classic pianist, called BS on me basically a dick is a dick is a dick, that Billy Joel shouldn't be "big leaguing" anyone not matter how universally panned they (Grand Fund) might be, and that I was wrong in assuming that the entire music industry is filled with dicks. He failed to respond to the above examples I used.

In other words, Rollins has to do things that cause the Mets to lose the division and/or postseason games in order to get on Larry Jones' level.

    "Oops, I Forgot"

Shane as the face leader of WCW was a brave "stepping out of his father's shadow" kid finally doing something on his own, doing it from scratch After the heel turn, that was forgotten in favor of Shane being an ungrateful spoiled brat who never worked a day in his life doing something just to get his daddy's attention.

I never understood why Mets fans got upset. What's wrong with showing a little self-confidence? The New York sports media loves to take quotes and blow them into a story. For the record, Rollins is hitting .364 against the Mets this season with a .712 slugging percentage. Because the Phillies for the last decade have been classic under achievers and went into the season having the same flaws that the Mets had (pitching depth, especially the pen) Plus, you should know this by now, the NY media loves trying to pick someone for their fans to rally against. Basically they wanted Rollins to be the Chipper Jones of the Phillies. Maybe they thought the same thing as there were a lot of anti-Met sentiment heading into the season, but I think they were trying to create something that usually happens organically.

And yes I know Jose Reyes isn't exactly Charlie Hustle all the time himself, but he actually hustled down that line on his game ender to 2nd! For someone spouting about how his team was "The Team To Beat" back in Spring Training, he sure hasn't done much in terms of beating the actual team his team HAS to beat. Okay, he has done some things, but he was a non-factor tonight anyway.

Couldn't help but notice the lack of hustle done by Jimmie Rollins on his inning ending grounder to short to finish the top of the tenth. Did he have THAT much faith in the Philly pen to hold down a 1 run lead? Yes as it turned out, they did, but still, if you are considered an MVP candidate and you want to be considered a "Public Enemy # 1" for Met fans, you try your damn hardest to beat that throw, continue the inning and add to the lead.

Speaking on behalf of a lot of Cubs fans, the general feeling with Sammy is that we were deceived, not just by his surely steroid-influenced performance, but by his character as well, and no matter how many homers he hit, he's been removed from the pantheon of Cub greats in the minds of many, even though his career achievements would otherwise put him among Banks, Santo, Sandberg, et al. You may notice that not only is #21 not retired, not only is it not out of circulation, but it's already been given to Jason Marquis. I think that sums up how the organization feels about Sammy, and the fans agree, so kudos to them for doing the right thing and washing their hands of him. EDIT: Today's development: = I just read a story in my local paper on Sosa and how with his career winding down he is accepting the fact that he no longer plays everyday. Just being a humble vet. I am actually surprised Sosa has that image now in Chicago. Imagine if "Bartman" never interferred and Sosa got the Cubs to the World Series and won the thing? Would we have a LEGEND in Chicago then? Good What If. I wouldn't be surprised though if the focus wasn't on Wood/Prior rather than Sosa in terms of who was the hero of the season. Those guys were just so damn nasty that year, that IIRC kind of overshadowed the decent offense the Cubs had that year. Plus I think chinks in Sosa's armor were showing by that point. Even though no one blames him for that loss. Interestingly he had his best postseason series ever in that NLCS. .308 batting, .455 OBP, and .577 slugging. Along with his only 2 postseason HRs and 6 RBI

Is it wrong to be so turned off by all the crap (not just on this board of course) from the conspiracy theorists and the fact that Osama is still alive, while we went after Iraq on false information (no WMD, no link to al Queda) and continue to be bogged down in what just might be something worse than Vietnam; not to mention how suddenly, and this pretty much happened rather quickly, not an evolvment, the nation just went back to its junk/scandal culture ways despite having a major "this will put things in the proper perspective" about what really matters event, that you almost get turned off by all the tributes and rememberances today. No, I'm not taking shots at anyone, maybe its just that I've become way too cynical, even before 2001. Not sure exactly what I'm expressing, certaintly sadness, maybe it is also frustration about certain things that happened since, I mean the 2000 election was a fracturous one for the country, and certaintly things have been boling for decades before that, but it really, really seems that things are worse now than they were even 6 years ago, heh, maybe Pearl Harbor would not have worked today as well as it did back then (and I'm sure those who think 9/11 was an inside job would feel that Pearl Harbor was rigged based on various sources). Again, I don't know exactly what I'm expressing here, but I guess I just needed an outlet. Certaintly thoughts and prayers go out to those who lost family, friends, ect.

Okay, then why was he asked to go in front of Congress? Why did he refuse to pee in Rick Reilly's cup after saying he'd be first in line for drug testing? Why did he go from a fun loving, 30/30 guy to a slow, moody jerk of a slugger? Why did he all of a sudden grow and then shrink just as suddenly? I don't have access to media guides or MLB guides but I'd bet there was some non-legit weight gain/loss the way there was with Bonds, that is NOT something that normally happens with the aging process.

61 is also the Major League highest for an individual not on Steroids. Who's to say A-Rod qualifies? Eh? So now we suspect anyone who hits HRs? Based on Canseco's statement that something is coming on ARod in the next book

No, it will be if for the second year in a row a team that failed to win 85+ ball games wins the World Series!

Just noticed this. Gee, you think with all the steroid talk in the aftermath of the Chris Benoit double murder and suicide that they would have updated Angle's resume to say "former WWE wrestler Kurt Angle." Here it actually kind of implicates that Angle took it back in 1996!

    The What If Topic...

Fair point, plus this is the WWF we are talking about. No doubt they wouldn't let one bad reaction stop them from ramming turns down the fan's throats.
  20. Steve J. Rogers

    The What If Topic...

What if the fans at WM 13 were not behind Austin in the "Double Turn" match with Bret (i.e. cheering Bret all the way despite his heel actions). Does the WWF still pull the trigger on the turns? One of the turns? Does Bret turn heel but not the Anti-American one that was only a heel in the States?
  21. Steve J. Rogers

    The Old School questions thread

The latter. It just made Austin appear more of a "I don't care about anything except the big belt" bad ass. Austin was already a main eventer so it was a complete sign of his attitude towards life in general.

Good point, my first post in this thread was based on someone on another forum going off the deep end saying that the Cards should all be banned and put into the WWF (he meant the WWE of course) because if this. Naturally this poster is a Mets fan/Cardinal hater.

Roger Clemens was named in the Jason Grimsley case. Wasn't he and Pettitte mistakenly listed or something? Actually Pettitte is even better example than Clemens since Yankee fans and media have always had a man-crush on that guy and thats probably why the whole Grimsley case got "swept under the rug" or here in NYC anyway

The thing I'm finding hypocritical is fans of other teams who hate the Yankees/Cardinals/Giants/Cubs/Whomever start ripping those players (Giambi, McGwire, Bonds, Sosa, Sheffield, ect) with such anger and vitriol that it makes me wonder how they'd react if it was found out that one of their team's big players (example, the Mets and Mike Piazza or Howard Johnson) was revealed to be a user. Would they "look the other way" the way they accuse fans of the Yankees do to Jason Giambi (and Gary Sheffield when he was in town) and Roger Clemens (hey if non-Met/Dodger fans accuse Piazza with no proof, I'm accusing Clemens with no real proof) To me you should bitch about the entire sport as a whole rather than picking and choosing just because Player A and Team A are among your most hated rivals or something.
