Why FOX and O'Reilly are scary

Oh I agree, its just funny that she used O'Reilly as a reference point, and it led to a nice argument between us about how no one takes anything he says seriously, and the majority people who make up his audience.

ESPN sucks, so do thread closers

I saw that as well. I thought I heard that 6 PM sportscenter has been struggling in the rating recently, so this might that been their attempt to keep viewers. However, I believe that a maneuver like this can really backfire on your audience. Its not quite the same, but the teases that the hosts seem forced to do on radio (even on the local end) are quite annoying. This morning Eric Kasilius was filling in for Mike Greenberg, and before the 7:20 break he teased someone he thought should be MVP and it wasn't a member of the Pats. Then he and Golic spend the next segment on Sean Taylor, and Eric then teases his non-Pats MVP guy AGAIN! I guess he figured he would announce it on when John Clayton was on because thats when he "finally" said he thought Farve deserved the MVP nod. Hence why teases are dumb for talk show radio, unless its for a guest in the next segement, since you never know how a conversation is going to go when you come out of the break. One time I was listening to a local ESPN host tease a take he had, never got to it in the next segment, then he teased it again at the end of several segments, and by the end of the show he never did get to say what his take was. And it wasn't like news was breaking all afternoon, the guy simply could not reign his show to go the way he wanted it to and it got lost in all the other crap that was going on in the show.

    MLB Off-season Thread

Interesting thing about Glavine going back to the Braves is that it gives one more shot for this chain to be unbroken. Warren Sphan's last year on the Braves, 1964, was Phil Niekro's first and thanks to the 1987 Braves wanting to give Knuksie "One Last Go Round" the last day of the regular season, Phil Niekro ended up being a teammate of Tom Glavine in Glavine's debut season! And so that meant that before this coming season, one of the following Brave hurlers who made their MLB debuts in 2002 would one day win 300 games! = Kevin Gryboski Trey Hodges (although he has since been released by the Twins and twice by the Braves, and hasn't pitched in the bigs since 03) Jung Bong (hasn't pitched in the bigs since 04 with the Reds) John Foster (hasn't pitched in the bigs since 05) John Ennis (hasn't pitched in the bigs since 04 with the Tigers) Andy Pratt (hasn't pitched in the bigs since 04 with the Cubs) Joey Dawley (hasn't pitched in the bigs since 04 with the Indians) Seriously though, what is with all those Baby Braves that haven't pitched since 2004? Heh, maybe Mazzone really is overrated as a developmental pitching coach as oppossed to a push-button one (ANYONE could be a PC to Smoltz, Glavine and Maddux.)

For some reason Jose Rijo's name is popping in my mind. Could have been one of those 81 A's whose arms got destroyed by Billy Martin?

    Best Submission Hold

Mankind's Mandible Claw, or The Love Handle when Mick did it as Dude Love, was the same way, untill they turned it into a joke with Mr. Socko. The announcers and whoever was the target took it more as if they were passing out from the stench of the sock rather than the actual move.

    The "Ask Al" Thread

Okay, is the late Joe Nuxhall's 8 years from his one shot start as a war time gimmick in 1944 to his return in 1952 the longest anyone has gone between trips to the show with an active minor league career in between?

Alex Rodriguez to opt out of Yankees Contract

What was that guy doing? I really hang in the Out Of Play and History forums, but what is he, anti-ARod?

Comments that don't warrant a thread

True, but what about the animosity towards Aaron Boone in the way animosity still exists for Bucky Dent. And I assume you have hatred for Joe Carter as well.

Comments that don't warrant a thread

Never getting over that one huh Al? Actually good question, for those who were alive and a fan will probably always will refer to Bucky Dent as Bucky "F'N" Dent, so for the Sox fans here, did the 2004 championship and the 2007 championship diminish the "Aaron Boone" game from its place on the pantheon of Red Sox failures? Certaintly Tim Wakefield being a part of both 04 and now 07 is forgiven for his giving up the homer, plus usually the goat horns have gone to Grady Little for Game 7. Of course I can see Sox fans going with the fallacy of the predeterimined outcome by saying "Yeah, it still sucks because we would have beaten the Marlins and 2004 would have been back-to-back!"

    Worst President Ever?

Throw in the fellow on the nickel as well. Though like Ike (great that campaign song is now going to be in my head for a while) and George Washington, he probably gets a ton of bonus points for what he did BEFORE becoming President. Thomas Jefferson, Philadelphia 1776

Approaching the 10th anniversary of the...

I'm trying to remeber the timeline, but word did leak on the net that Bret would be gone heading into that weekend. IIRC there even was word on Nitro that week about a "Major Announcement" coming the next week. (Fummy aside, Nitro opened that show with the entire nWo coming to the ring with the Canadian flags and the announcers were wondering if the nWo had took over Canada) So there was knowledge on the interent that this would most likely be Bret's last match, with perhaps a "farewell" apperance on Raw the next night.

    Sports Media Analysis Thread

I am amazed at the sheer lack of homework done by hosts and station staffs on the radio, especially when they have a staff that can do the legwork for them. Quick example, this summer Orlando Hernandez was starting for the Mets against the Yankees. On 1050 ESPN Radio in New York the host for a quick local show before the game, who I believe just came back to the area from Austrailia, first pondered, then stated it as if it was a fact that it was Hernandez' first apperance ever versus the New York Yankees. Now, it would be one thing a generation or two ago when you had media guides and other press books that might not have what you need readily available, but today all your staff working in the shop needs to do is to log onto baseball-reference.com since they have splits and game logs now. And the guy would have seen that Hernandez faced the Yankees 3 times eariler, twice in 2005 as a White Sox, and even the year before as a Met! What makes it even more incredible are two things, I actually placed a call, I didn't want to go on the air but I told the call screener that Hernandez had faced the Yankees before, and where to find the info and to tell the host, he never did. Then someone called in and described a game Alex Rodriguez had versus Hernandez when ARod was on the Rangers. So now the "fact" was that El Duque had not only never pitched against the Yankees, but only Alex Rodriguez had faced him in the Yankee lineup! Again, lets look at B-R's game log page on Hernandez, and compare the Yankee box score from the game... Johnny Damon Derek Jeter Bobby Abreu Alex Rodriguez Jorge Posada Hideki Matsui Robinson Cano Melky Cabrera Miguel Cairo Bascially everyone who played for the Yankees that night except for pitchers Wang and Meyers had faced Hernandez at some point. Did it take long to get all that info? No, so why couldn't anyone during that 3 hour show just quickly get it and put it out onto the air so that the host could stop repeating the false information?

I shudder to think of how many "Clemens is better than (pick your favorite maligned superstar QB)" comments on the radio, and in the press in New York if the Jets come out of this victorious. Same people ready to fit Pennington with the Yellow Jacket back in 2002!

  23. I gotta agree. I can't think of a team right now that would see him as a viable option as a starter. He might have a mildly decent career as a back-up like Vinny but as a starter, the ship has finally sailed. Man, and to think it was only 6 years ago, coming off a 41-0 playoff win over the Colts, that certain media members and fans were saying Chad was actually a better QB than Peyton Manning! Or that they'd take Pennington over Manning.
