WCW facts, tidbits, and stuff people forgot
LessonInMachismo replied to JoeDirt's topic in General Wrestling
Well, to balance it out, he did stereotypes of his own Italian-American culture. And now he is producing Christian videos. Give the guy a break. -
I think the point of the angle would be that they are BACK together...
-
I say ink Doug Williams and have Regal manage them as a tag team. I come up with ideas for tag teams in my dreams...that's how badly I miss a hot tag division.

Speaking of ugly belts, can anybody tell me the name of this belt? This isn't trivia...I really don't know. An indy wrestler from Florida who is a big puro mark once told me that the belt is "a piece of shit."

Word to the herd. -
Yeah, that's it! Anything but Stephanie. My friend told me that PWT did a joke on it saying that it was possessed, a la Christine.

That's not racist. Racist is probably the guy in my avatar. Racist might be The Rock telling Eddie to ride away on a donkey. Racist IS half the stuff Teddy Long did on Raw. But hitting someone with a bottle of liquor that emanates from your country of origin? That's just bad booking. -

At a guess, I'd say it was because WCW, and therefore Russo, was in charge of whatever he did, and Liger, despite hating it with a passion, and he did, didn't want to rock the boat and reluctantly did what he was told. I don't think he wanted to risk the New Japan/WCW relationship, though I don't think it would have mattered anyway, because I don't think they had much of a relationship after that. The whole bullshit impacted New Japan a little, I think, because the next January Dome Show saw Liger beat Kanemoto in less than four minutes, which I believe was done to rehab the title after what went down in WCW. By "bullshit" do you guys mean the way the title was devalued from a certain point of view? Not just that, but Liger took it personally too, because he felt that being assoicated with the whole racist element of the title change to Juvi demeaned both him, the title, and, to a lesser extent, New Japan. Hence the sub-4 minute over Kanemoto, which was undoubtedly meant to take people's minds off the fiasco, by firmly reminding people Liger was a dominant jr heavyweight wrestler, which restored some credibility to all concerned. The first Russo run in WCW is a blur for me. I remember images more than actual matches and angles. What was racist about it? -
Actually, they were early 1999, when WCW had that tag team tourney to restart the tag team division. Hot damn we had some good tag team wrestliing during that time. I WAS going to list those belts, but after reviewing them, they look to WWF-ish. Not that that is a bad thing, but they didn't look like they belonged in WCW. Nice pics, eiker. I love my Attitude WWF title belt. A question...I remember seeing fans holding up big gold belts in the crowd in 1999. The problems is that they looked shiny and big gold was never shiny. Were these actual official replicas or some knockoff? I remember magazines would have ads for the replicas, but they were in black and white.

Jerry Lynn vs. RVD, Hardcore Heaven '99. I first saw it on the very first edition of ECW on TNN, which featured an alternate commentary from the original match by Joey Styles. The match was chopped, but to be honest, there is really no difference from the full match, which I saw in its entirety on ECW: Extreme Evolution. I thought this match was the SHIT when I first saw it. Now, after repeat viewings, I can't sit through it for more than ten minutes. It's a spotfest chock full of telegraphed maneuvers and, in some cases, silliness.

How Come they never made it big?

Here is a site to compare Mike's size with other wrestlers' sizes, using a bunch of kids as a frame of reference. Damn, Dawn Marie looks great in that outfit... -

Kevin Nash, in that drunken interview from 3/2001 that I posted a few weeks back, pointed out how it was stupid for WCW to book Awesome against him right off the bat, thereby exposing his actual size. Hey, Nash can make good points...sometimes. <<Scorpio burned his WWF bridge by creating a scene at the hotel where the wrestlers were stayin for WM XIII. It was something to do with his gf/wife, and it was pretty negative.>> Like what? Did he have a fight with her or something? -

I know at one point WCW wanted a Norton v Van Hammer, I think, IWGP Title match for Starrcade, and that got cancelled, I'm guessing for the same reason as this match did, because New Japan didn't want to sully the IWGP Title with a match against someone it felt was many levels beneath the title. Do you think the problem with WCW booking a DQ finish in an IWGP Tag Title match where, apparently, Bulldog & Neidhart won the Tag Titles from Chono & somebody (might have been Mutoh) would've played a role? That happened in 1998, I believe. I assumed NJPW was livid. -=Mike Masahiro Chono & Hiroyoshi Tenzan [2] 96/07/16 Sapporo Tatsumi Fujinami & Kengo Kimura [4] 97/01/04 Tokyo Riki Choshu & Kensuke Sasaki 97/04/12 Tokyo Satoshi Kojima & Manabu Nakanishi 97/05/03 Osaka Kensuke Sasaki & Kazuo Yamazaki 97/08/10 Nagoya Keiji Mutoh & Masahiro Chono [2] 97/10/19 Kobe Vacate on 98/05/07 because of Mutoh's knee surgery. Masahiro Chono & Hiroyoshi Tenzan [3] 98/06/05 Tokyo Defeat Gen'ichiro Tenryu & Shiro Koshinaka in 6-team tournament final. Gen'ichiro Tenryu & Shiro Koshinaka 98/07/15 Sapporo Hiroyoshi Tenzan & Satoshi Kojima 99/01/04 Apparently, NJPW didn't take this alleged win too seriously, as I don't see Neidhart and Smith up there. -
Eddie Gilbert and Kerry Von Erich

Didn't he tease it at a Mania? Speaking of which, I hated that Tornado Punch finisher. It might have worked better as a pre-finisher move, just to get the crowd riled up, but it was pretty much on the level of the FU in terms of being a good finisher. -
The Attitude era belt. I bought it for a reason. The Steamboat/Honky/Hart/etc. IC title. I liked a lot of the wrestlers who wore it. For whatever reason, it looked important, as someone mentioned before. I hated its successor. Also the tag team titles from that era and for the same reasons. What can I say, I am a WWF mark.

I first saw Kerry on ESPN back in the "Wrestling On Every Channel" days. I vaguely remember the other Von Erichs, but Kerry stood out. When he jumped to WWF, I thought it was cool, because back then me and my friends thought of NWA and others as "minor leagues." As recently as 2001, I saw him in more matches on ESPN Classic. I thought he was cool, a fun guy to watch in the ring...but he never did anything to stand out. Probably not his fault. I definitely wish he had been around longer. After I learned about his leg years later, my respect for him shot up. Now I will listen to his WWF entrance theme in honor of him. -
Hmmm, I don't remember seeing it for a while but I do remember someone cutting down a rumor about the creatures being Shane and Steph. I've never head anything about Stephanie being a CotN. Her first appearance of note was years later. Unless you consider her old WWF Merchandise Catalog shoots a notable appearance. Didn't she look like Punky Brewster?

Thanks for all the input. Yes, I wanted the Cage Match DVD for Owen vs. Bret. I will get it eventually. For now, I have SIX new DVD's to watch. Yeah, DDDVD.com rocks all. I first found it when searching for a good price on the anime show Star Blazers. No, I'm not an anime fan, but Star Blazers rocks. The price difference was like $60 compared to Amazon.

Ha...I saw "hall dvds" and I thought "Scott Hall has a DVD out??" I don't know why I didn't pick up HoF earlier. Heenan is one of my all time favorites. The only complaint I foresee happening with Rey and Brock is that the DVD's were made a bit early. Well, in Rey's case, a lot early. Thanks, J82.

The other day, I actually saw someone with a WWF sticker on their rear windshield. No, I don't mean World Wrestling Federation. It had a panda on it...World Wildlife Fund. We were on a highway going 60MPH, but if it had been in a parking lot or something, I would have gone "Dude! I watch WWF, too! Did you see Royal Rumble?!"

I purchased my X-Box used, so how do I know when it was produced? I keep it in the closet 99% of the time, anyways.

I actually remember this now. What about the time Kid Rock dropped the F-bomb on Raw? -

Well, I just went on the logic that he was a cowboy, his name was Bill, Bill Watts had curly hair, and every other name Jones had used was a spoof. Where did you get the info on Akeem being a jab at Rhodes? -

It was probably late '99, as Russo had written the angle for Hart to be opposed to the Outsiders when in fact it was all a scheme for the nWo 2000 to get all of the gold by Starrcade. As for the censors...Vince himself has uttered the word "asshole" on TV. What kind of curse words was Nash using? Certain words merit a fine by the FCC. To stay edgy, Vince would simply pay the fines. The way things are going with the FCC now, that all may have changed, but I'm not sure about it in terms of cable TV.
