Commie. Seriously, I hope for a speedy recovery for Clinton, even though I agree with him on almost nothing.

You've never heard Milo Hamilton call an Astros' game, have you?

Do you buy movies when they first come out on DVD
sfaJack replied to Lil' Bitch's topic in Television & Film
It's pretty rare that I'll sit around waiting for a SE of a DVD. Bare bones doesn't bother me most of the time because I just don't watch many of the extra features. For instance, I think I've listened to two commentaries out of all the DVD's I have. Deleted scenes are pretty cool, but their inclusion will not affect whether I buy a particular DVD or not. If it's a movie I really want, I generally just go get it. -
Astros call up Chris Burke, so I guess Richard Justice gets his wish of sitting Jeff Kent down and letting the future play now.

Interesting column Bruiser posted. You'd think the Cubs would be more worried about silly things like making fewer stupid outs on the basepaths and playing tighter defense, but I guess those things should take a back seat to getting your feelings hurt by the big, mean announcers. I can see why Dusty is one of the famed "players' managers" though, since he actually defends their petty bullshit with the announcers. I can't wait to see who gets the blame if the Cubs lose the wild card. It'll probably be hurricane Francis's fault.

What happens if the entire Cubs/Marlins series is cancelled this weekend? I mean, we're in September now; there isn't exactly much room in the schedule to cram in some make-up dates. The only day both teams have off is the 20th, and you can't play all three games in one day. My thinking would be you'd just switch the sites for each series and play at Wrigley this weekend and at Pro Player next weekend, but I don't know how logistically possible that would be.

They could play the fucking Diamondbacks the rest of the season and I'm not sure it'd matter much. The Cubs look like anything but a playoff team right now.

I wonder if there is an alternate ending.

Oh, I know that he only declared himself after the rules was seemingly changed and that he didn't do anything sneaky like Clarett, but he still knew that the NFL would appeal the case and that there was a chance they'd win. If he hadn't taken any money or signed with an agent, I'd be a little more sympathetic for him. And I definitely agree that it sucks for USC, particularly since, as Vern said, the NCAA waited until 2 days before their first game to announce their decision. That is unfair.

You know, after initially taking Williams' side in this whole thing, I've thought it over and I think the NCAA is right in keeping him ineligible. Williams knew when he declared himself for the draft that this was possible, and he shouldn't have taken being reinstated for granted. This isn't going to ruin his life. He'll go play in Canada or something for a year and then he'll be in the NFL the next season while still getting all the hype, money, and pussy that goes with it. I really would like an explanation to this one though. Bloom has been screwed.

Can't you bitter Yankee fans just think of it like karma biting Pettitte on the ass since his first year in Houston has pretty much been a disaster and get over it? The Yankees are going to the playoffs, the Astros are not. Simple as that. It's not as if his leaving left a huge, gaping void that sucked the Yankees down into the shitter. On topic: if I was the Dolphins, I'd tell Ricky "thanks, but no thanks...now give us that money" if he approached me about coming back. In the end, they're going to be better off without him. And who's to say he won't do this same thing again?

I'm curious to know why everyone thinks Houston is going to be so good. Their defense should be mostly healthy and thus better, but I think their offense still has a ways to go. They don't have much receiving depth outside of Andre Johnson (Gaffney? Bradford? Anyone?), Domanick Davis isn't going to stay healthy, Tony Hollings can't hold onto the football, and they have an unproven left tackle. David Carr HAS to show that he's growing as a quarterback. Add in the fact that they're in a brutal division and I think they finish fourth with a no more than 6, maybe 7, wins.

That's probably the worst fucking song I've heard in a while. Just terrible. I gave up on most all of the music stations about two years ago and now stick to sports talk radio for most of the day. It's more entertaining, for sure.

I'm on my second Gateway and have had no problems with any hardware or had any tech support issues. I only got a new machine because the old one had too small of a hard drive and too little RAM to be much good for me anymore and I'm not competent enough to upgrade that stuff myself. They've got my full endorsment and I really don't know why Gateway gets such a bad rap.

Pot grower faces murder charges for firefighter

Don't you have to establish "intent to kill" to charge someone with murder? -
Marty Booker got traded to the Dolphins dude.

I did a fantasy draft on one of the old football games on the N64 once (don't remember which game exactly). After picking up Barry Sanders with my first pick, I went with speed, speed, and more speed at most every other position, and particularly on defense. The result was a lightning quick defense that allowed just about zero rushing yards and very rarely got burned on deep passes. My biggest weakness was a bunch of no-hands receivers that seemed to drop every other pass thown at them, however. I also had about $8 mil worth of cap space left over when I was finished, too. Doing the draft was fun...for the first 20 rounds or so. Dealing with the salary cap got tiresome, as did scrolling through all the available players.

My college has produced zero major leaguers. Yeah, baby.

The Cubs defensive ineptitude is really starting to reach ridiculous levels. Goddamn...they were on the verge of all but knocking the Astros out of the race completely, but NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. Fuckin' Macias. I figure Wood has a good shot at beating Oswalt tomorrow which would give them a solid 2/3 in the series, but man this one hurts.

Hey Al, what do you think about the rumors of the Phils keeping Bowa after the season and only rearranging the coaching staff? Oh, and Lidle blows. Clemens now 3-3 with the bases loaded this year.
-
Andy Pettitte is done for the season. He'll have elbow surgery to repair his torn tendon and is supposed to resume throwin in December/January. I guess this means the Astros are officially waving the white flag as they have been holding out on this for a while.

So, unbelievably, it's been 10 years since the 1994 strike. I know several people who pretty much ignore baseball now because of it, but I'm curious to know if those here feel the same way. Did the strike kill your love for baseball? Have you gotten over it, or did it never really bother you? For me, I remember being extremely angry when it happened, simply because '94 was shaping up to be a good stretch run with the Expos/Braves in the East and the Astros/Reds race in the Central, for instance. I got over that anger fairly quickly however, and was back on the horse watching again in the shortened '95 season. My love for the game just won out over baseball's petty bickering over money. Being only 15 at the time probably helped too since I still had childhood memories of the game (both watching and playing) pretty fresh in my mind. Anyone else?

Kyle Farnsworth is more of a liability than Sosa.
sfaJack replied to The Czech Republic's topic in Sports
My thoughts exactly. I remember when he first came up in '99 and everyone was saying how great Farns was going to be and blah blah blah. He's just as wild now as he was then and has definitely outlived his usefulness. Trade him now while they can maybe get a couple of bats along with that proverbial bag of baseballs for him. -
I do not care for this Cubs bullpen. At all. Jesus.
-
I was in the other room, but I could have sworn I heard the Astros' TV announcers say that the Cardinals' Chris Carpenter left the game in the 3rd inning with back pain. Anyone heard anything about this? And in regards to Mark Prior: oh, Jesus. What the fuck? I would have never thought he'd have an ERA over 5.00 this late in any season, but there it is.
