One & Only MLB playoff discussion thread

I heard on the radio today that the tv ratings for the LCS series are up 51% over last year. Bravo for that, I say. Question: Is the ratings bump due to: A) the good/great baseball being played B) the Cubs' run C) the Red Sox/Yankees series D) some combination of the three For me personally, the Cubs are the main factor, though I usually watch the LCS every year regardless of who's playing. Oh, and Bruiser is right on. Cubs/Marlins is the first series in a couple of years to really grab my attention and not let go. What great games they're playing.

    Sapp blasts NFL 'slave system'

Is there a more overrated player in the NFL than Warren Sapp? Seriously, besides his fat-assed touchdown dance, what has he ever actually done on the field to warrant the constant blowjobs and hype the media gives him? EDIT: spelling

    Boston VS NY

I could see your reasoning for suspending Clemens along with Pedro, except for one thing: CLEMENS DIDN'T THROW AT RAMIREZ INTENTIONALLY. Christ almighty, I'm not a Yankee fan in any way. I don't care much at all about what the Red Sox do, either. But as AS said earlier, if Clemens had wanted to hit Manny, HE WOULD HAVE HIT HIM. How in the hell can you say that Clemens was throwing at him intentionally when the pitch was over the freakin' plate? No way was that pitch intended for Manny's earhole. Manny overreacted. That is the only reason there was any sort of confrontation in the 4th inning (the 9th is a different story). It's not like it matters, anyway. Suspensions or no suspensions, the Red Sox will still be the Yankees' bitch when this series is said and done anyway.

    Bill Romanowski

It's getting to the point where I'm bothered by anything ESPN does. But yes, this is disturbing. I didn't see the segment, but the preview they ran for it was enough to make me puke. "Romo" is punk ass little bitch who is getting everything he deserves.

It's not usually luck if you win two games in a series, I'll give you that. But if the Marlins hadn't scraped by in game 1 (i.e. the Cubs kept handing them the game and they kept giving it right back), there would have been no game 5 for them to win. There was nothing at all "lucky" about last night. Give Beckett all the credit in the world for absolutely manhandling what had been a red-hot offense. The Cubs did have a couple of breaks go their way in game 3, I agree. But that was a horrible play by Conine in the 11th; sloppy defense like that will earn you no sympathy from me if it costs you the game.

No kidding. The Marlins don't even know who's starting game 6 for them...that isn't going to help anything. Prior + a rowdy Wrigley crowd should make for a very tough predicament for the Marlins. I'm just thankful Beckett won't pitch again in this series. Florida is seriously lucky they weren't swept in this series. Give them credit for bouncing back time and time again in game 1, but they were only one or two pitches away from losing that one, and thus the series. I like the Marlins, but I think the run is over. Obviously you never say never, but as I've said before, their chances aren't real good.

Well, I don't know who those people were. I thought 24 would kick ass. And it does. Jesus...how many rabbits can Zambrano pull out of his hat? 2 bases loaded jams without a run scoring. Great job, but he better settle down a little bit.

I'm getting a real bad feeling that this game isn't going to turn out well for the Cubbies in the end. Beckett is ON today, while Carlos is all over the place. Something will have to give sooner or later. And is anyone else getting tired of Fox running spots for their stupid new shows ("Skin" is gonna blow some serious ass) constantly and then suddenly cutting away from them because the game has started back up, causing us to miss the first pitch? I mean, ok...we get it...you guys have a new show with Jerry Bruckheimer. Now shut the fuck up and give us our baseball.

    Best Games of 2003

I personally loved the Yankees/Cubs series back in June. Specifically the Wood v. Clemens game, where Roger got denied his 300th win. Great stuff. Cubs/Marlins Game 1 is great, even though the Cubbies lost. Cubs/Marlins Game 3 is even better, for obvious reasons.

Cry me a fucking river. The Cubs will have taken care of business; they deserve the "extra" day off. Nothing is stopping the Yanks from winning their series in 5. Doing so would minimize the supposedly blatant and unfair "advantage" the N.L. team might have. Quit your goddamn bitching about the schedule and just win some fucking games. If your team is good enough, they'll win the WS anyway. (By the way, my living nearly 2000 miles from NYC limits my knowledge on this, but I've yet to hear any of the Yankees actually complain about this. It just seems like another excuse for their whiny-ass fans to lean on if they don't win it all again.)

Why Clemens? He didn't throw at Manny intentionally. That ball was high, but it was over the plate. If he had been throwing at him, I promise you that he would have hit him. Pedro shouldn't have been kicked out, either. Now if he had hit Posada or someone else after plunking Garcia, yes, toss him out on his ass. It is pretty rare for someone to get tossed for doing that without the umpires having issued a warning first, however. Intentional or not, Pedro didn't deserve to get kicked out, even after he threw Zimmer to the ground. Manny should have been tossed. Zimmer got "punished" enough; no ejection needed there.

I'd almost go as far as to say that the extra day of rest could actually hurt the N.L. team. Sure, it's nice to have a day off to rest, but sometimes when you're on a roll (i.e. the one the Cubs appear to be getting on), the last thing you really want or need is an extra day to sit around and do nothing, travel or no travel. You just want to get out there, play, and win some games. Sometimes a long layoff does nothing but kill your momentum.

One more win! One more win! GO CUBS!! Damn it...where's Mik when you need him around? The Marlins have about a 1% chance of winning this thing now. Having to beat Zambrano, Prior, and Woody all back-to-back-to-back is something I don't think they can do.

How about Kevin Kennedy making an excuse for Zimmer and saying Pedro was wrong? OMG YANKEE BIAS CONTINUES~!!!!!!!11!!!

A bit late joining the discussion of last night's game, but I must say that that was one that the Cubbies absolutely needed to win. Not necessarily for the 2-1 series edge (though it's pretty big), but mainly because they can't afford to waste one of Prior's or Woody's starts. Zambrano/Clement are good pitchers, but you never know what you'll get from them and I'd sure hate to have to run one or both of them out there with my season on the line. That said, I think if the Cubs can steal one more in Miami, then they should have it wrapped up. That would force the Marlins to beat both Woody and Prior in Wrigley, and I just don't see that happening. Maybe one of them, but not both. What a nerve-wracking ordeal that was last night, though. I swear if I was a smoker, I would have burned through a whole carton. As it was, I bore a whole through my carpet from all the pacing and swearing I was doing.

    Cops aren't very nice anymore

Five or six years ago, during college, on one Friday night, an ex of mine and I were lying in the bed of my truck on our backs just looking up at the sky, watching stars (her idea, not mine) in poorly lit parking lot at one of the city parks. All of a sudden, a bright light was flashed into the back of the truck and we heard a man's voice say, "Stand up slowly." Blinded and confused, we sat up and found a sheriff's deputy pointing his Maglite right at us. "What are you two doing out here?" In total disbelief that he'd give a shit what we were up to (I mean, we were both fully dressed how much could we really be up to?), I stammered "Uh, just looking at the sky, sir." "Looking at the sky, huh?" He paused a moment. "Got any ID on you?" "Yes, sir." "Let me see it." I'd never been confronted by a cop outside of traffic stop, so I was more than a little panicked. I climbed out of the truck and handed my driver's license to him. He studied it for a good five minutes or so, before saying, "You go to the college?" "Yes, sir." Then he turned to my ex and said, "Do you know this young man?" "Yes, I do," she said. He then made her tell him MY full name. Not hers, mine. I guess I looked like a rapist or something. "Are you here on your free will, ma'am?" "Yes." About this time, since I was just standing around, I put my hands in my pockets, as I usually do when I have nothing better to do with them. The cop whirled around back towards me and yelled, "Get your hands out of your pockets, boy. You're making me nervous!" (I'M making HIM nervous????) After another minute of looking us over and studying my license, he finally handed my license back to me and said, "It's after midnight. Why don't you two go on back to campus?" "Yes, sir. We will." "Sorry about this. Truth is, I thought I'd found me a couple of queers laying up in that truck. This is a big area for queers to hang out." I wanted to laugh at this, but I figured I'd just "make him nervous" again. "You two have a good night," he said. "Yes, sir." And then he drove away. It's a funny story now, but I was scared shitless when it happened because I had NO idea why he was picking on us. Ah, the old days....

    Another A's collapse

I wouldn't mind seeing the Cubbies make a run at Tim Worrell. Then that gascan Dave Veres could be vanquished from their roster.

    Jaguars punter gets the axe...

My college team had a huge 15ft long, custom-made axe hanging on the wall in their locker room. Of course, our team is the Lumberjacks.

    I fucking love Boston

Yeah, because we all know how well those Buffalo Bills fared in the four consecutive super bowls they appeared in, right? Just out of curiosity: what the hell does that have to do with anything? This thread is about idiot Boston fans who "celebrated" getting a chance to be humiliated by the Yankees...again. Exactly how do the Bills fit in here?

Oh, don't think Fox won't talk about it. They'll jam a segment on it in the pregame show right after they talk about the Bambino's curse again.

Choken, you just now realized that? They've been that way since 1996. Anyway...wow. Thank God for an 11-spot for the Cubs. The damn Marlins never quit. This Cabrera guy looks like he might be a really fine ballplayer one day.

Cubs better save some of this offense. Their bats are subject to going ice cold at any time later in this series. Let Prior get to 90 pitches and then pull him. No need to burn his arm tonight. If the pen can't hold an 11 run lead, then they don't deserve to win.
