Script for Impact on 1/3/08 (with working link)

IMPACT SCRIPT By: Bryan Alvarez The Fight Network [email protected] The TNA script that was leaked two weeks ago was an eye-opener. When I first glanced at it I thought, "No surprises." But then as I actually examined it I was struck with the fact that all those problems I see every week on TNA are magnified ten thousand times in this script. I often watch Impact and think to myself, "Boy, these people have no idea what they're doing." Upon reading this script I suddenly realized that -- and I must use all caps here to illustrate the magnitude of this revelation -- THESE PEOPLE HAVE NO IDEA WHAT THEY ARE DOING. My buddy Vince printed out the script for me. We decided we were going to engage in some HOT THESPIAN ACTION and act out a few of the segments on our radio show. The printed-out script is 23 pages long. That alone floored me. A script for a pro-wrestling television show that is twenty-three pages long? Perhaps it's my old-school mentality here, but I cannot fathom why a 23-page script would ever be necessary, especially for IMPACT of all things. There are five pages of a Raw Homecoming script floating around on the Internet. That's for a three-hour show, and the five pages cover most of that period. How could you possibly need a 23-page script? I could write 23 pages on this script alone, so this week I'm going to concentrate on just one thing, the fact that every single solitary promo is typed out word for word. This is what Krystal says, this is what Bubba responds, this is how Krystal reacts, this is what D-Von says, and so on. Although it doesn't seem like much, this is a humongous problem and actually illustrates nearly every major issue the company has. What is the point of a promo? The point of a promo is to build up a match, to get people interested in seeing two or more individuals have a fight, and, in the longer term, get people interested in seeing them fight on a pay-per-view. Nowadays, the best promos in this business are either cut on UFC shows, boxing shows, or WWE 24/7. You rarely see a good money promo in modern WWE, although they do exist and sometimes are very good, and you never EVER see them in TNA. Why? Because the best promos are those where a person vocalizes an issue they have with another person, and because they believe in that issue they are able to vocalize it with passion. There is rawness to it, a sense of reality even if you know deep down that they don't fully believe what they're saying. A good example is Floyd Mayweather Jr. During the 24/7 build-up for his fight with Oscar De La Hoya on HBO this past spring he buried the Golden Boy at every turn, saying he (Floyd) was the better man and was going to whip this guy's ass. He was a perfect heel. People bought into the dynamic to the tune of 2.4 million buys. But when it was over, Mayweather was a perfect gentleman, praising De La Hoya. So when, six months later, HBO did another 24/7 series, this time with Mayweather and Ricky Hatton, I would think most boxing fans would have to know that Mayweather was merely playing his heel role again. It didn't do the business of the De La Hoya fight in the US because, well, Ricky Hatton isn't Oscar De La Hoya, but it still came close to a million buys and did even better in the UK. It worked. With boxing and UFC promos, even though most hardcore fans of those sports understand that guys sometime play roles and say what they're "supposed to say" to build up fights, they can still get into it. In a way, there is a suspension of disbelief that goes along with boxing and MMA promos that we don't get in pro-wrestling, where suspension of disbelief is key. Why? Well, we may understand that Floyd Mayweather Jr. isn't really the rich, cocky prick that he portrays on television, but it's easy enough to believe that he is. Now compare that to, say, the TNA promo where Jim Mitchell is talking about how Chris Abyss' mom shot his father four times in the back or whatever the story is. How could anyone POSSIBLY suspend their disbelief for that story? And, moreover, who would even want to? Who could possibly care about the actions of two characters we've never even heard of or know a thing about? In the Mayweather/Hatton special, we had the mothers of both men talk about how they (the moms) would like to whip their son's opponent's ass. That was money. In TNA, Abyss, a complete freak, is under the mind control of Jim Mitchell because of something his mom, who we know nothing about, did to his dad, who we know nothing about, twenty years ago or something. This is not money. This is a failure. As is every promo in TNA. Vinny and I read some of the script and sometimes I had to have him read his line again because I had no understanding of it the first time around. It's so horribly written, and worse, everyone's promo is written the same horrible way. Stupid sentences, stupid comments, stupid references to 1998, everyone is required to say the same stupid stuff, and they all sound stupid saying it. There is no emotion in it because they're all reading lines scripted by the same writers, and the promos never make you genuinely interested in a single thing they're selling. On top of that, because they all read the same stupid lines, nobody actually learns how to really cut a promo. When you take into account these scripted promos and the general booking of the show, it's pretty easy to see why everybody on the show is a midcarder. It's impossible for anyone to break out of the pack even if the company tries to break them out. They're still just another guy reading just another stupid promo, and everyone seems capable of beating everyone else on any given day and it never matters in the end (see Angle, Kurt and Machismo, Black). There is a reason UFC business in 2007 won't come close to 2006 levels. It was the year of upsets and most of the top stars were handed major defeats. At least UFC had no control over those outcomes. TNA has total control and manages to screw it up. When everyone is a midcarder, nobody is a star. There isn't a single real star in TNA, and every real star that has entered the company over the last three years, the most recent being Booker T, ended up just another guy within weeks. To be successful a wrestling company needs to have superstars (not just wrestlers) who have issues with each other and are able to vocalize those issues in such a way that fans become interested in paying money to see them settle these differences. TNA's lame scripted promos illustrate everything wrong with the company and why they continue to fail in such a spectacular manner. **** For more pro-wrestling and MMA news and analysis with Bryan Alvarez, please visit www.figurefouronline.com.

WWE General Discussion - December 2007

So Dr. Phil Astin was in court last week hoping to get his bail conditions eased up so that he could go to work. He's totally broke and has been offered a job at a local towing company. Well, he got to court and the government produced surveillance photos of him gallivanting all over town. He's allowed to leave his house to go to church, see the doctor, visit with his attorney or attend court hearings. Well, he was shopping at stores, eating at a local restaurant, and even showing up at the home of his ex-wife who has a restraining order against him. Apparently Astin's attorney was taken completely off guard and called this a government ambush. The prosecuting attorney said the judge should increase Astin's bail conditions rather than ease them up. Judge said she'd make a ruling next month. Worse, Assistant US Attorney General John Horn announced that the government had obtained evidence showing that Astin had been overprescribing painkillers for Benoit and Nancy (and numerous others) long in advance of the killings. Horn said Astin had prescribed methadone and Oxycontin "well in excess of what is legitimate medical practice". Latest on Hulk Hogan is that he will likely be held liable at least to a degree in the expected Nick Hogan/John Graziano Family civil lawsuit. The two keys are that Hulk is the registered owner of the yellow Supra that Nick crashed in August, and that he signed for Nick's driver's license. According to state law, any parent that signs "shall be jointly and severally liable with such minor for any damages caused by such negligence or willful misconduct." The third key is whether or not he provided the alcohol that was in Nick's system at the time of the crash. Hogan bought nearly $100 worth of beer that day for himself and several of Nick's friends, all of whom were over 21. Nick was seen sipping from a plastic cup when everyone tried to get into a Tiki bar that afternoon, but nobody knows what he was drinking. There is no proof that Hogan gave him any alcohol, and in fact the story (granted, this is from the Hulk side) is that Nick was drinking while Hulk was in the shower, then left to go to dinner with Graziano and his friends, all without Hulk's knowledge. Of course, Hulk also said that he was irate when he found that Nick left while he was in the shower, and the question is why would he be so irate if he didn't know that Nick had alcohol in his system? These things will all be determined in court. The other big question is how much liability will be placed by the court on Graziano for not wearing his seat belt. Graziano, at 22, was of age and was thus responsible for his own actions in that matter, and he was not buckled in. What percentage of the responsibility for his injuries rests with him will be taken into account when totaling damages. Obviously the Hogan side will claim that had he been buckled up he wouldn’t have suffered the cracked skull and head injuries that have left him likely needing nursing home care for life. Nick was buckled up and was able to walk away from the crash. The Major Brothers are legitimately neither twins nor brothers. They both grew up in Glen Cove Long Island and were friends for life, breaking into wrestling under Mikey Whipreck. They're young, 21 or 22 years old, and look remarkably similar, hence the brothers gimmick. Vince McMahon apparently didn't know they were really related until a few weeks ago and was upset about it. They were having a creative meeting and got into a discussion of relaunching them with some sort of new gimmick on Raw or Smackdown and the subject came up. Someone noted how impressive it was that they were pulling off this twin brother gimmick given the fact that they weren't even related. Vince was "stunned and frustrated" to learn this fact, saying (and think of how funny this is) that if two guys aren't really brothers they shouldn't be booked as such, because fans are too smart about things like that nowadays. Aside from the obvious comedy of all the fake brothers in WWE history, including Kane and Undertaker, and the fact that Vince himself has a fake midget son running around on TV every week, this is a situation where VINCE didn't know, and if he didn't know I'm pretty sure the wrestling fans weren't going to figure it out (or, more importantly, care). So anyway, he told them to talk to the Majors and come up with new names. Michael Hayes wanted them on Smackdown to be a Von Erich-style young babyface team to fill the void created when London and Kendrick went to Raw (and what a bust that has been). The new idea, with the Rated Rmy (much better name than Edgeheads I have to say), is to bring out more of their personalities. Hayes also seems them as very similar to a young Edge and Christian when they debuted in WWF in the 90s as protégés of Gangrel. The difference, of course, is that Edge and Christian had both worked quite a bit in Canada before breaking in, plus had trained extensively with Dory Funk Jr., who was probably the best trainer in America during that period. The WWE tour of Mexico is actually a South of the Border Tour with February 9th in Guatemala City, February 10th in Guadalajara, February 12th in Quito, Ecuador, and February 14th Santiago, Chile. Because of international touring, they're also taping two weeks of TV on February 4th, 5th and 6th. On the 4th in Austin, TX they'll tape two weeks of Raw, on the 5th in Corpus Christi it's Smackdown and ECW, and then on the 6th in Houston it's another Smackdown and ECW. According to the Record newspaper in Mexico, WWE is back in talks with Mistico. We can confirm that others have heard the rumor, but we don't know how serious it is. When the idea for the WWE Juniors division was first conceived, it was to be a vehicle for Mistico. Suffice to say, this was lost in translation. Talk heated up big-time earlier this year after (seriously) he became the first luchador in history to win Wrestler of the Year in the Observer. He was brought in this past February to work a dark match in San Jose (which is, in fact, the hometown of Dave Meltzer, but the decision to do the match there was made from the Mexican side, not the WWE side) and did well. It was thought at the time that, pass or fail, this would great effect the wrestling world in 2007. Strangely, he did his tryout (which actually took place before the show with Dean Malenko), people were impressed, and then he just went back to Mexico and life went on as if nothing had happened. The issues are obviously that he has no experience working WWE style, the ring is very different than it is down in Mexico and would require him to change his style, he can't speak English, he's very small (well, about 160 pounds at 5-8 or so, and that may be with the aid of some protein shakes), etc. Nothing we haven't discussed a hundred times before about any outsider coming in. WWE signed Apollo. He'd worked for IWA in Puerto Rico forever before jumping to WWC last year. He'd also spent some time in TNA over the years, working at one point under a mask as Leono, then later becoming part of LAX before he no-showed some events (including the Final Resolution PPV in 2006) and was replaced with Machete. He's had a number of different issues backstage, and he also just happens to be the guy who superkicked Scott Steiner in the neck during a tag match in Puerto Rico in June and nearly killed him. Steiner suffered a trachea injury and was hospitalized for weeks. This signing baffled me, but he's BIG so I shouldn't be surprised. He had a tryout in OVW last week and they liked what they saw. Eve Torres, who won the Diva Search this year, is heading to OVW after Christmas. WWE signed Silas Young to a developmental deal. The new Raw DVD at Walmart has an insert listing all the PPV events for 2008, and both Cyber Sunday and One Night Stand are listed. Duane Gill in an interview with Alex Marvez talked about meeting the real Goldberg for the first time in 2003. For years, he'd been playing Gillberg in WWE as a spoof on Bill. "He was pretty cool and actually took some pictures with me. But you could tell that night he hated my guts and everything that had to do with me." He said he'd always wanted a PPV match between himself and the real deal, though in hindsight he's very happy that Vince McMahon didn't book it, because he figured Bill would have "killed me credit:F4W Newsletter

Source: Wrestling Observer "The Boogeyman hasn't been seen on WWE TV since November when he was involved in the one night only return of DX. To put it bluntly, WWE don't know what to do with him. WWE writers Ed Koskey and Brian Gerwirtz are Boogey's main supporters as they like to write comedy segments for him. Working against this though is ECW head writer Dusty Rhodes, who wants to limit skits and promos on ECW with more solid in ring action. The general feeling is that his act grows stale quickly, so they will use him on a non regular basis, possibly moving him to Smackdown for the younger children."

PWInsider is reporting that Steve Madison is now gone from WWE's Florida Championship Wrestling developmental territory. Madison had been working under Steve Keirn. It is also being reported by PWInsider that Lacey Adkisson/Von Erich, the daughter of Kerry Von Erich, was also dropped as a WWE developmental talent. Lacey was described as very beautiful, but many felt she didn't grasp what the business was all about and wasn't around much last month for her scheduled training in FCW. Lacey has a "MySpace" account at this link and is usually pretty vocal about her WWE status, so it's possible she could comment about it soon. DetNews.com has an article up at this link regarding WrestleMania 23 generating an estimated $30 million to Detroit earlier this year. It was noted today by The Wrestling Observer that in reality there is no real way of knowing if that figure is correct or not. No Von Erich I guess...

From 411mania.com/wrestling: Another Puerto Rican wrestler going to the big leagues. The following was posted in the LuchaLibreOnline.com website, the biggest and most reliable Puerto Rico wrestling site: It was come to our attention that German Figueroa, better known as Apolo, has recently signed a deal with the WWE and will be reporting to Florida Championship Wrestling at the beginning of next year. Apolo worked in TNA during it's beginning, is a former NWA World Tag Team Champion with D'lo Brown and was part of the original incarnation of LAX. He also works for IWA Puerto Rico and worked for World Wrestling Council, Planet Championship Wrestling in Florida and several other promotions in his career. Credit: LuchaLibreOnline.com

Yeah, that was ODB. She was part of OVW for a while, until TNA signed her. The more I watch her, the more I'm surprised WWE didn't offer her a developmental deal. Now I never say things like this but ODB is creepy lookin....one of my female friends likes wrestling and insists that's a man with tits.

The WWE will never ever be bringing back Cyrus/Don Callis, that guy had more heat than anyone ever. He was hated by damn near everyone including guys like Taker... He was disliked so much, Matt Hardy told the story..Where he'd dress in his car. So one day..they broke toothpicks off in the locks of Cyrus car so he couldn't do that or get to his stuff.

In the latest F4W, Alvarez says that CMLL thinks Mistico is milking it... CMLL's final TV taping of the year took place before 8,250 fans at Arena Mexico on Friday night. Most of the major stars have now been given the opportunity to go home to celebrate the holidays, and they'll return full-time in January. It should be noted that there are people very skeptical of Mistico's latest injury, believing that perhaps he's not injured badly and this is a great way for him to allow himself time to go home and heal as opposed to just having to cancel (or work) his eighteen million dates over the next several weeks. He's undoubtedly hurting, don't get me wrong, but the belief is that his latest injury isn't so severe the he can't compete, particularly since he supposedly suffered it right after Sin Piedad and will be OK to return right when the company gets back into the swing of things. The next big megacard is not until March 21st, which is the Salvator Lutteroth (CMLL founder) anniversary show. Anyway, semi-main on this show saw Atlantis & Ultimo Guerrero & Hijo del Lizmark beat Dr. Wagner Jr. & Dos Caras Jr. & Marco Corleone when Guerrero pinned Wagner in the third fall after a blind foul. Wagner has returned to CMLL and is super over. The idea, obviously, was to smurf him over so the fans would pay to come back and see him get his revenge. Main was LA Park & Shocker & Negro Casas over Los Perros del Mal when Park pinned Garza with a sunset flip into an inside cradle. Garza demanded a singles match afterwards and Park said no, I don't want you, I want Perro so I'll wait.

Latest in the Benoit case. The estate battle could end this week as the Benoits and Toffolonis will decide whether this can be settled amicably or whether they are going to court. Who gets the $1.5 to $3 million estate, of course, all rests on the order of deaths. If Nancy died first, which is what is widely believed, the estate goes to the Benoit family. If Daniel died first, the estate flows to Nancy and then on to her family. The belief is that the Toffoloni family doesn't have much of a case here since the coroners, police and medical examiners have all stated that Nancy was killed some time before Daniel. Also, Michael Benoit's family offered the WWE the chance to pay the children a $2 million settlement in exchange for a wrongful death lawsuit to not be filed. WWE said they were not interested in discussing the matter. Benoit's attorney said his client has not yet decided whether he will file suit. However, the Atlanta Journal Constitution, which has been at the forefront of reporting on this case, believes it "appears to be just a formality." The $2 million payment, Benoit's attorney Cary Icther (of WCW racial discrimination lawsuit fame, and a key member, coincidentally, of the Georgia Athletic and Entertainment Commission) said, was for "recognition of their father's contributions to the company". He added, "Had the WWE taken the slightest interest in its wrestlers — before it became the object of the interest of district attorneys and Congress — there is little doubt that Chris Benoit and his family would still be with us today." That, of course, is greatly open to debate, and I can tell you with some certainty that WWE feels that they are not in any way responsible for what happened. There is a feeling that because the Benoit side only asked for $2 million, they don't feel like they have much of a case. Hogan told OK Magazine that, in hindsight, the idea of doing Hogan Knows Best probably wasn't for the best. "There’s an upside to it and there’s a huge downside to it, especially with family members who weren’t used to it. There was a lot gained and a lot lost by doing that. I had some crazy days and some things that caught me off guard that I didn’t know were going to happen. I’ve been riding the highs, surviving the lows, leaning into the wind. All that stuff is all an attitude thing for me — being positive and knowing things are going to get better. My main concern in life is my son and his situation and the boy that’s in the car. There is no other choice but to do okay. Jumping off a bridge isn’t an option.” They asked about perhaps one day doing another series, and he said he didn't know if they could ever regroup again, but made sure to throw out: "Never say never!". Ads for the No Way Out PPV at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas list an elimination chamber as the main event. Most likely the winner will get a title shot at WrestleMania, so I would expect Undertaker to be in there and win. The latest we've heard is that the Congressional hearings on January 23rd that were scheduled last week upon the release of the Mitchell Report will only cover baseball and not professional wrestling. The group arranging them, headed by Tom Davis and Henry Waxman, claimed several weeks ago that the hearings would cover both, so I don't know what happened to change their minds. Rey's knee jammed during the MVP match at the PPV, but he was telling people later that night that he was all right. There was a hearing Tuesday regarding the new pro-wrestling regulations suggested by the Georgia State Athletic and Entertainment Commission. If you'll recall a month or so back we did a story on this and ran down a list of the totally antiquated rules they were proposing. Basically, the rules suggest that pro-wrestling is both real and fake, with requirements for what guys can wear, how the rules need to be enforced, etc. The big key is that they also want an ambulance on site, two EMTs, and a 5% fee to the commission. The hiring of the ambulance and the EMTs is the deal breaker for most indy promoters, who just simply cannot afford it. Of course, an ambulance used to be required for shows up here in Washington state when I wrestled regularly, and International Championship Wrestling always seemed to find a way to afford it. The rules are scheduled to go into affect on January 7th, which will result in a lot of local shows going out of business. In an interesting twist, WWE attorney Jerry McDevitt announced that due to the strict ruling, if such a thing went into affect they would stop running events in the state. What's also weird about it is that at this point, WWE isn't even affected since the statutes currently don't have any bearing on any company that has total assets of $25 million or more. The Commission is trying to get that exemption stricken, but right now it's still on the books. At the meeting Tuesday, it was determined that they would wait 90 days to put everything into effect so they'd have time to engage in discussions with indy promoters. JBL will be coming back full-time as a Raw wrestler, his first feud obviously being with Chris Jericho. No idea who will be replacing him on color on Smackdown Speaking of JBL, he did a radio show in Philadelphia and said a lot of the horrible things he said about Eddy Guerrero during their feud were actually lines that Eddy himself had come up with. He also said he was sorry for what happened in his feud with Blue Meanie (referring to the assault in the ring at the first One Night Stand), saying he was unprofessional and largely to blame. The feeling on Kennedy internally is that this is a sink or swim opportunity for him, and that if he doesn't rise to the occasion in the feud with HBK he'll be relegated to mid-card purgatory for the foreseeable future. We've mentioned many times that if you can't improve in the ring working a feud with Shawn Michaels, how can the company possibly invest in you? According to one person who has also followed his career since the beginning, it appears -- and this should come as no surprise -- that it is a pattern of inconsistency; periods where he does well and then periods where he crashes and burns. Earlier this year he was scheduled to become World Champion, but then he suffered a triceps injury. He returned and didn't look good and the opportunity disappeared, and I can't see him getting the belt any time in the near future. Then he was supposed to become Vince's illegitimate son, which would have been a career-making gimmick, and blew it by volunteering to go on national TV to talk about steroids, lied, and then get busted for it. He used to be very close to Austin, but Austin in a recent interview said that right now he was listening to too many people. According to another source, he's listening to anyone and everyone for advice, including people who have no clue about what he should be doing in-ring like writer David Lagana. He is said to have little confidence in his own instincts as a performer, which is pretty clear when you watch his matches. Every match it's like he tries to be someone else, largely because every match he's trying something different that someone else told him. Jeff Hardy told Bill Barnwell of IGN.com: "Matt's good, he's at home, his appendix burst when he was in Tampa, so he goes home, he's out of the hospital one week, and he starts having chills and fevers. He went back in and had to get 40 more cc's of infection out of his toe. Now, this is the best he's felt since this all started". For those wondering, yes, the Jillian Hall Christmas album is legit and available on iTunes. I listened to the free preview last week, then one of our subscribers actually purchased it for me as a gift. I believe you get all five songs for $1.49. It's not joke when they said it was one of the most purchased items of the week. It's also no joke when they say it is quite awful. In fact, it's so awful that you're struck with the amount of talent this woman has. She also does her own back-up vocals for most of the tracks. It's so bad it's good, though I can tell you that I don't plan on ever listening to it again. The songs include Have Yourself a Merry Christmas, Jingle Bell Rock, I'll be Home for Christmas, Rockin Around the Christmas Tree, and The Christmas Song. WWE is looking for an editor for a new magazine they're looking to put out that will be targeted towards children. Perhaps the WWE version of Nickelodeon Magazine?. John Graziano's mother stated that he's now semi-conscious and has opened up his eyes. He's still unable to breathe without the aid of a machine or speak WWE has added three Mexico dates for February. It's called the Smackdown/ECW Road to WrestleMania tour. They're at Palacio de los Deportes on February 8th running head-to-head with CMLL (building seats 19,000). http://pwtorch.com/artman2/publish/WWE_New...cle_23979.shtml WWE attorney Jerry McDevitt told the Atlanta Journal Constitution today that WWE will cease holding shows in Georgia if the Georgia Athletic & Entertainment Commission authorizes new regulations for pro wrestling in Georgia. "If those regulations are applied to us, we won't do Georgia," WWE attorney Jerry McDevitt told the AJC. He reasoned that the regulations should not apply to WWE because it's not a sport. "Almost every state knows, and has known for years, that wrestling is entertainment and not a sport," he said. When told about McDevitt's response to the proposed regulations, Cary Icther, the attorney for Michael Benoit, told the AJC: "What else would you expect a bully to say?"
