"Croc Hunter" Steve Irwin Avoids Charges

There's a cultural disease in Australia called tall-poppy syndrome. As soon as ANYONE becomes remotely successfull and wealthy, then it's the duty of the media and the public to completely destroy his/her life and put them back into place. Yes, it's a common human characteristic, but moreso down under. And I fucking hate it.

Sounds of the Beast: The History Of Heavy Metal.

Yeah, I got it last September. Probably, the best book on metal I've read thus far, with a good writing style that often ruins a lot of music books not written by qualified writers. Christie also seems to know his stuff, but beware, a lot of it is really subjective, especially when it comes to catagorizing albums into the specific sub-genres of metal. Still if you're not a stubborn little wank, it's very enjoyable. Probably the best part for me was the section on the evolution of black metal, and the scandinavian (sp?) scene with all those fucked up black metallers (Euronymous, Varg Vikernes, Death i.e all of Mayhem) burning down churches and eating brains. Death for example (whom suicided), would sleep in dirt and live amongst animal corpses to enhance the whole black metal image. Good for him. All in all, the most informative book on metal I've ever read, with tons of good anecdotes that one can boast to his friends. Before reading this book, I didn't know that it was actually Dio who popularised the 'devils' sign at metal shows (which ironically was intended as the love sign). So yeah, it was good. ALSO: It has an awesome cover design. Especially in hardcover

    DVD commentary tracks

My favourite commentary is off The Goonies DVD. Every cast member (that is, every goonie) is present, and they all have cool stories to tell. Plus, their good natured humour really makes it an enjoyable watch the whole way through. EDIT: Another highlight is the fact that Corey Feldman just DOESN'T shut up. Half the time, nobody is even listening to him.

    Top 500 Heavy Metal Songs

A really good book I read earlier this year was Sound the Beast: The complete Headbanging history of Heavy Metal The best thing about the book is that its written by a fan whose passionate about the subject, so he covers a wide range of topics not usually found in other "metal" collections which seem to concentrate on AC/DC and Metallica as the only bands that people have heard of.

Top 500 Heavy Metal Songs of All-Time

I'll give it a whirl. I've had my fair share of prancing in forests wielding axes and wearing corpse paint. I was also drinking buddies with Guns n Roses when they were touring here in Australia.

    Top 500 Heavy Metal Songs

Yeah, I saw it at a shop today. It's pretty detailed actually, a paragraph is dedicated to each song as well as comments from the composers. I also saw a book titled (I think) 'Bang Your Head: The rise and fall of Heavy Metal'. It looked like a bit of fun, anyone here read it?
  7. That's not the point. They're in the Asia Pacific region that Australia is a part of, and therefore there is no alienation from the nations that count the most.
  8. Australia hasn't alienated itself from the region. Only this year has it gained free trade agreements from Taiwan and China.

Let's all summon the spirit of Euronymous to determine what is true metal.

    Gig Review : Iron Maiden

Nice Review. Good to see that you're a mark for journeyman like I am. Without doubt it's my favourite song off the new album. Great lyrics, great melody, great everything.

    Political Affiliation

I'm still not satisfied. I'm guessing the word liberal comes from 'liberty', which obviously means freedom. But political philosophy over the past several hundred years has used the term liberal to essentially describe a free market society with more oppurtunity and respect for the individual, with less government intervention and more choice for the individual. Thus, even though both parties advocate these principles, wouldn' logic suggest that the politically right leaning party should have the term 'liberal'?

WMD Could've Been Launched in 45 Minutes

I'm certainly not arguing that the WMD issue was not the most publicized reasoning for war. But I believe that the reason behind this, is not that it was the Government's primary reason, but because it was a clear, easy to understand and accessable arguement that any idiot could understand. It had a greater chance of being accepted by the public than other arguements. But just because it was the main issue publicized, doesn't mean that it was in fact the Government primary concern. Clearly, the main reason for ousting Saddam was to create an oppurtunity to establish a democratic capitalist Iraq, and pray that it was forsee an entire reformation of middle eastern politics. The result of this would do more economic good for the world and the US than any bucket of oil would.

WMD Could've Been Launched in 45 Minutes

You have so far provided 2 things in this thread. 1. Ridiculous and Laughable generalisations of your political opposite. 2. A whiny tirade about how you heard Bush talk a lot about WMD's. From reading your posts, I can't even tell if you were against the war at all. When I referred the Iraqi people, I was saying that since we are essentially talking about justification for going to war, why not actually open your mind to the things that matter and stop masturbating over Bush's marketing of the war.

WMD Could've Been Launched in 45 Minutes

Kamui, the arguement your making in this thread seems to imply that you're more concerned about the marketing of the invasion rather than the actual effect/consequences/advantages/disadvantages of it. We all know that the lack of WMD has made Bush's sermons on the matter seem more and more questionable, but really in the long run, shouldn't you be more concerned about, say, the Iraqi people, rather than constantly attempt to ram a president that you obviously never liked in the first place?

    Political Affiliation

I'm a strong liberal in the classical european sense, which I guess makes me a republican. Which leads me to ask, how the hell did America turn the term 'liberal' into a left wing label?

WMD Could've Been Launched in 45 Minutes

Exactly. The sheer thought of Saddam taking WMD out of the country is ludicrous, illogical and defies common sense. Why can't you people see this?

    Funniest people of all time

In relation to comedians, I'm liking Lewis Black. His whole eternally-pissed-off sense of humour really appeals to me.

    Top 100 Metal albums

The title of this thread should have been 'Top 100 Heavy Metal Albums', which explains the absence of death metal, black, brutal, thrash etc. Here is a list from the same authors, of the Top 50 Extreme Metal Albums

    Top 100 Metal albums

Seasons in the Abyss is a better album than Reign In Blood, though maybe not as influential. I think Powerslave deserves its spot, though I'm a mark for metal songs based on literature, and Rime of the Ancient Mariner is THAT fucking good.

The One and Only Survivor: Pearl Islands Thread

This whole 'worst act of deception' promotion for next episode is really interesting, and I'm guessing it involves Jon somehow. I heard one guy predict that Jon gets a letter or phone call by one of his family/friends (as do all the other contestents), only he lies saying that a family member died...and then its discovered that he's full of shit. That would be entertaining, but I can't see it happening. I mean, why does Jon need to provoke the sympathy factor when he's in a strong alliance? As for Rupert, he was easily my favourite survivor, and I wouldn't be surprised if he played SOME role in upcoming episodes. Not as a returning constestant, but maybe as a part of a challenge. Just imagine how awesome it would be if Rupert was some masked man in black that the survivors had to wrestle with, and then he reveals himself near the end. Ah well, a man can dream.

    Goonies Pt 2

I was watching the cast commentary on the DVD, and Chunk isn't even fat anymore. The fat kid was the best of the goonies.

Wow, God hates wrestling. This has probably been posted, but wrestlingobserver.com says: If this is true, then I guess it was drug/alcohol related.
