    Fighting liberal bias through legislation

I've had lots of conservative profs, generally in the more scientific fields, but I have had them in history as well, as well as a bunch of staunch liberals. But I never had one who would not let you voice your opinion, although they would argue against it, and I never had anyone let their personal views influence my grades. I'm sure glad I was never in 2Gold's situation.

The OAO SmackDown! Thread for 2/10/05

Angle/Misterio was good, as was Funaki/Chavo, and I expect Akio/London to be a good match too, but JBL makes even the worst show entertaining, and that was what I was getting at. I thought it was a better show than RAW to be honest.

Its nice to see that people are starting to come around on JBL now. He makes Smackdown worth watching pretty much single handedly.

Who should of won the WWE world title...

Dibiase deserved one, but in retrospect it worked better with Savage's year long reign and Dibiase was never at the same level afterwards. I'll go with Mr. Perfect who was easily over enough to be WWF Champion in 1993. Certainly would have been better than Hogan's reign. If you include the WCW Title, then Rick Rude definitely should have won that one.

    The Apprentice 3

Robfather will be joining them soon. I think it is time Trump fires them all and moves on to Apprentice 4.

    Shows you've been to.

Not too many. Sometimes I can't get up to go for a show if it is in a down period, and I have missed out on several in Ottawa due to midterms being at the same time (in at least one case the next morning). Martel also beat Santana in the opener, but that's not mentioned here. And there was a WWF Tag Title match (Demos/Rougeaus, won by Demolition) in between the WWF Title match and the main event (Roberts/Dibiase). Also, I seem to remember Hogan winning clean this time, but I may be wrong on that, I was more concerned with Bret/Perfect & Roberts/Dibiase at the time. The rest is accurate, including the awful Brainbusters pinning each other finish. Not a great show on paper to say the least. It was funny seeing Roma lose to a jobber though. Another screwed up Toronto card. First, Simba beat Martel via forfeit when he didn't show/make his flight/whatever, not Diamond. The Rockers/Power&Glory match didn't happen, I never saw the Rockers live in my entire life. It was Harts/Rythm&Blues. The rest is accurate. Main event was Perfect/Von Erich were Perfect won the IC Title but Piper screwed him over, and Earthquake did beat Hogan. Advertised main event was Savage/Slaughter with Slaughter giving him the WWF Title shot that he promised him at Royal Rumble. But Savage broke his wrist leaving us with a mystery opponent, which ended up being Warrior who went nuts and lost by DQ. Last time I have ever been to Maple Leaf Gardens, and a pretty good show. I was a huge Jeff Jarrett mark at the time so I was happy to see him. Only time I've ever seen a ladder match live. Orginally it was supposed to be Ramon/Douglas, but he was on the outs at this point. The ending was a big brawl with Camp Cornette running in to beat up Bret and Diesel running in to beat up Taker. Shawn was supposed to be here fighting Goldust and causing the homophobes in the crowd to explode at the site of those two in the ring, but he was busy selling his collapse on RAW. Dibiase was here which was nice. He even did the ol' stuff the $100 bill down Razor's throat bit. My favourite show that I've attended live, it was just a fun time all around. The best part was that when I bought tickets in January I had no dream of seeing my two favourite wrestlers at the time (Malenko & Benoit), but then the walkout occurred right after and I got to see them here. A couple of errors with the site. Benoit was in the IC Title Match, which was a warmup to the Wrestlemania 2000 match. It was actually better as it was given more time and didn't have the two fall gimmick dragging it down. Albert/Crash was confusing as it was announced as being a Hardcore Title match, and after Albert won he was given the belt only to have Crash steal it again. Yet it was played as a straight match, and it was advertised as non-title. I think Chimel just screwed up. Trip jobbed clean to the People's Elbow in the main event and Tori got tombstoned. X-Pac got caught with drugs at the border (or he got the flu or something, I forget) and missed the show. Boo hoo... Already talked about earlier, but I will add that thinking back and seeing Orton job clean to Tommy Dreamer is pretty funny. I was hoping for Benoit to return, and got X-Suck. Just look at the card. RAW was terrible at the time, but they could have at least put Jericho on.

    X-Pac hating....

It was actually pretty good at that point in time, at least in comparison to recent times. They had Edge & Christian, Dudley Boyz, Hardy Boyz, Head Cheese, T & A, Too Cool, Bossman & Bull, APA & The Radicalz all around in the spring of 2000 when X-Pac & Road Dogg were teaming.

Paramount releasing Classic Nickelodeon on DVD!

They should put some of the game shows on DVD. I spent hours watching Nick Arcade.

    Whose side were you on...

Sid was a heel, but he was getting cheered half the time so it was hard to notice. Plus, Hart hated him and he was rapidly becoming the most hated guy on the roster. Sid turned face immediately afterwards because of it.

    Non-Spoiler Velocity/Smackdown match listing

VELOCITY 1. Paul London vs. Akio (The match gets time) Should be good. This is why Velocity is so much better than Heat. 2. Hardcore Holly vs. Rene Dupree I wonder if Dupree is going to visiting the hospital again this time. 3. Charlie Haas vs. Spike Dudley Poor Charlie. He is possibly the most misused guy on the roster. Could be good if given time, but I imagine Haas is jobbing. SMACKDOWN 1. Eddie Guerrero vs. Kenzo Suzuki I like Kenzo, I admit it, but he's treated as a joke. Eddy is a level beyond regardless. 2. Luther Reigns & Danny Basham vs. Mark Jindrak & Doug Basham Intriguing. I love heel vs. heel and mixing up the teams could make for an interesting match, even though it will probably be lousy from a technical standpoint. 3. Funaki vs. Chavo Guerrero Time to put over the home country guy. Could be good. 4. John Cena vs. Orlando Jordan I hope and expect a lot of interference from JBL & The Cabinet to build that issue. If not, then this match is pointless. Cena wins anyways. 5. Kimono Match: Torrie Wilson vs. Hiroko Blah... 6. Kurt Angle vs. Rey Mysterio Jr. These two always perform well together. 7. The Undertaker vs. Heidenreich(probably dark match) I thought Johnny was dead. I hope its a dark match. Overall, if you include Velocity, this looks like a much better card than RAW had.

Edge and Orton In the Midcard !

Edge's gimmick is like Bret Hart's in early 1997, basically that he keeps getting screwed over when he normally would have won the title. He is supposed to get whiny bitch heat.

Dean For DNC Chair Thread #2

The left will vote Democrat anyways, so they don't have to worry about that. They sure as hell aren't going to vote Republican and the Green isn't big enough to make a dent. It is the moderate vote that they need to win in order to get elected. The only successful Democratic president since Truman, and some would say Roosevelt was Bill Clinton, and he did it by swiping the moderates away from the Republicans. You may agree with extreme leftwing policies, but 50+ years of history says that they won't win the election if they follow that route, barring some Watergate type disaster from the Republicans. Would you rather have a moderate-style Democrat like Bill Clinton as president or a hardcore conservative like George Bush? Because those are your choices. Even in Canada, which is a far more liberal country than the US is, the NDP routinely get trounced in elections. They barely win enough seats even to be recognized as an official party these days. Here's a little secret for you, and followers of the Democratic party. The Republicans since World War II and probably even the Civil War have a much easier time getting elected than Democrats. They can make some mistakes and get away with it. The Democrats can't. If they don't play to the moderates they will lose, because the Republicans will just mobilize the bible thumpers and seniors and blow the Dems out of the water. It happened in 68, 72, 80, 84, 88 & 02, and it will continue to happen until the Democrats wake up. This isn't about pushing forward your platform, this is about getting votes and winning an election. If that means making compromises, you do it.

    Yes, especially towards Steiner.

Because the standard American is slightly right of centre. Therefore if the Republicans are at the extreme right and the Democrats are at the extreme left, they will go towards the Republicans. For the Democrats to be successful they need to be like the Liberals in Canada, position themselves as moderates in between the insane left (NDP) and the right (Conservatives). It doesn't have to be true, but it has to appear that way.

Oh me too. In retrospect, Hogan was much better. I like Hogan better now than I ever did as a kid.

    X-Pac hating....

It's where the fans hate you, but in a "I don't want to see you here" way, rather than a "I will pay to see you get beat" way. Yes, so instead of paying to see you lose they simply turn the channel. Test had this heat too. It is easy to figure out for faces, like with Rock's initial face run and Randy Orton now. The hard part is trying to differentiate it from legitimate heel heat, like JBL gets. Think of it as similar to the heat that HHH gets around these parts, except extended to 90% of the entire fanbase.

    X-Pac hating....

I started really hating him in 1994 when he went over Jarrett in the first round of the King of the Ring. Until then he was just a minor nuisance. I never liked him.

    Dynasty?

The Pats have already matched Dallas, are one away from Pittsburgh, and two away from the greatest NFL team in history, the Lombardi Packers.

    Whose side were you on...

Warrior. I never really cared for Hogan or Warrior (of the big three faces of the late 80s, Savage was the one I preferred by a wide margin), but Hogan was definitely getting boring by this point and I wanted something new.

The Democrats need to push social issues and the economy. If criticizing national defence policies is their main campaign point, such as in the last election, they will lose every time. Rightly or wrongly, Americans simply do not trust the Democrats in that area. They didn't with Korea, they didn't with Vietnam, they didn't with the Cold War, and they don't now.

    Should the Ultimate Warrior..

No. His career was short, he was a complete flop as champion, and anything after Wrestlemania VII, aside from his return at VIII, was a complete disaster.

When did you know WWE would regain the #1. spot

When Vince said on RAW that there was no way in hell that he wanted Austin to become champion in early 98. I knew that was the storyline that would carry them to #1 again. Tyson would get people talking, but he would be gone after Wrestlemania. Austin/McMahon is what would keep them there.

When did WCW hit The Point Of No Return ?

The fingerpoke was what started the downward spiral (some would say Starrcade 97, but WCW actually managed to survive that thanks to Goldberg), but it wasn't the point of no return. I also felt that they could have saved themselves as a company for awhile. They were going through a bad period, but they could rebound. What finally killed them was the departure of the Radicalz. WCW had just lost Bret Hart, who never would be able to return, and then to lose the top three wrestlers in the company and a good midcarder in Perry Saturn, one of which was the WCW Champion, meant there was no saving it. In the eyes of most people, the situation was so bad for WCW that possibly the most respected veteran in the industry passed on the World Title, which he had never come close to getting before, in order to jump to the competition. It also was the first week of the new managerial regime following Russo's firing. It absolutely killed WCW's credibility, and they never could recover. Losing Guerrero, Saturn & Malenko was bad enough, but they could never have afforded to lose Benoit. When they did besides the damage to WCW's reputation, it completely decimated the card of its wrestling talent. Jeff Jarrett was probably the best technical wrestler remaining on the roster after the splitup, and a high profile wrestling company cannot survive like that. They did a lot of bad things to get them to that point, but that was where I felt the cancer had spread too much.

    Moments you *did* see coming

I figured most of those out on my own. And things being spoiled isn't anything new. The fact that Mean Mark Callous was going to be Dibiase's mystery partner at Survivor Series 1990 was known well in advance. It was how they did it that was the surprise. Is that from an old Observer or Torch newsletter? I don't know. It was in the local papers up here prior to the event in the old wrestling columns that they used to have in the sports sections. Studd winning the 89 Rumble was another thing that was spoiled, as well as Andre winning the WWF Title in 88, although what happened afterwards was not reported. On this topic, one moment which was supposed to be shocking but even my dog could figure out was Owen turning on Bret at Rumble 94.

    Dynasty?

They're a full dynasty, in my view. They won ten straight division titles, and led the NL in wins for five years in a row. The 1949-53 Yankees are the only other team to do that. They won three NL titles, and a world championship. Great players? Greg Maddux, Tom Glavine, Chipper Jones, and Andruw Jones are likely Hall of Famers, and John Smoltz and Javy Lopez have a chance to post HOF numbers by the time they are through. Yes, they have their postseason failures, but its not easy to win an eight-team tournament, and that is the ONLY strike against them. The thing is dynasties usually refer to a single team, but Atlanta has gone through numerous transformations in that decade. Aside from Smoltz, who else is still playing for Atlanta in 1991? I consider that more a great franchise that has good management and a knack for finding players than a single dynasty.
