    Yankees/Devil Rays Tomorrow!

In other news, statisticians worldwide were stunned to find out that the Detroit Tigers have already been mathematically eliminated from playoff contention prior to Opening Day. I honestly don't think they will finish last this year overall, if only because they are in the terrible AL Central. They will be last in the AL definitely, but I like them better than the Pirates or possibly the Brewers.

I don't follow. I think what he means is that they might finish ahead of Baltimore.

Toronto Blue Jays Good enough to make the post-season, but need help to do it. If the Yankess or Red Sox stumble (and the Yanks aren't off to a good start), then they will be right there. Their lineup is great. They were second to Boston in runs scored last year, and their staff is much improved. Halladay, Batista & Lilly should be great assets to the team. The biggest question marks are Hentgen, Towers and the bullpen. They are certainly a level above the D-Rays & Os.

    EU Not Liking Kyoto Protocols

The only constant about climate change is that it changes. It is either going to get colder or warmer, it won't stay the same. This can happen in theory, but has a problem in practice because it would require a vast amount of ice to do it. If there was a continent like Antarctica sitting in the north, things would be a lot more serious. The way the ocean currents work has effectively isolated the Arctic Ocean from affecting the Gulf Stream. The problem is Greenland, but there simply isn't enough ice there for it to happen. It is certainly something to look into, but it doesn't look possible given the current orientation of landmasses in the Arctic. It is true that in the case of global warming that the eastern seaboard would get colder, and it is certainly bad locally. What many people fail to mention is that the weather in the heartlands and in Ontario would be improved as far as farming is concerned. Places like Ontario, Michigan, Ohio & Indiana stand to benefit greatly economically. It is all a matter of location. What we should be doing is to try and find out the cause for this, and then adapt accordingly? If it is something that we are doing, then we stop it. But if we aren't, then lowering CO2 levels will simply waste time and resources when we should be learning how to adapt to the inevitable. That's why we need to find out. Right now, it looks like the level of CO2 is a reactionary effect. The temperature goes up, and then the CO2 levels rise. Not the opposite. Actually, it isn't that bad, at least per capita. Most third world nations are much much worse in terms of pollution, due to lower environmental standards and allowing certain chemicals (specifically CFCs) which actually are really bad. The earth's atmosphere is well below the threshhold now, but it was a big problem for much of the 20th century. This is one of the main reasons that is attributed to the restoration of the ozone later which has been going on since the early 90s. Exactly. We should be worried about pollution, not because of Global Warming, but because it is bad for our health to breath in this crap. Most of us are only annoyed because generally speaking we are in the prime years of our lives. It becomes a far more important issue for children and the elderly. Here is the problem. Too many people assume these issues to be linked, and they aren't. All the time and money wasted on lowering CO2 levels, could be much better used on a very real problem, such as the polluting of our lakes and rivers. That is quite true, that that is happening. There is only so much time and so many resources to go around. You have to priortize these things, and right now making sure we have breathable air and clean water/food supplies is of a far far bigger concern than whether or not we may have something to do with the 1.5 degrees Celcius increase in global temperatures in the last century that we may or may not have had much to do with. 1000 years ago the world was warmer than it is now, and we didn't have the doomsday scenarios that many people seem to suggest (actually the drop in temperatures in the 14th Century was of far greater concern). We need to get focused on the real problems, and Global Warming isn't it.

Jersey Girl does poor box office

I said that the backlash against PH was so strong that people think it is one of the worst movies ever. PH was extraordinarily unpopular among critics and viewing audiences. A large part of this was due to the large amount of hype on this film that proclaimed it as the ultimate war movie surrounding Pearl Harbor. It wasn't, and the backlash was tremendous. JP3 & Tomb Raider were never thought of as anything but dumb action movies. You saw it last summer too. Chances are you have heard far more people complain about Matrix Reloaded or Hulk than you have about Charlie's Angels 2, despite the fact that they are clearly better films. It is a combination of the two. Back a few years ago people would see a disaster movie just because it was a disaster movie (Volcano, for example). I believe I already have complained about the marketing for this film and its release date. TDAT has the latter problem as well. Dennis Quaid is the most well known actor in the movie, but he's hardly an A-list star. He wasn't that 'popular'. More like he was the only character you didn't want to punch out everytime he opened his mouth. I guess Will Patton's character was okay too. I saw Core trailers playing with virtually every movie for months leading up to release, and it annoyed me greatly. People definitely knew about it, they just didn't go and see it for the same problem. The problem with TDAT is that their trailer is very similar to the Core trailer, only has been shown less. I said it came out between Val Helsing & Troy. Shows how much I know about the film, and I see lots of movies. My parents, who generally enjoy this type of movie, have never even heard of it. It seems most of us agree though that it will underperform. On some other boards you will have people claiming that it will gross more than Troy & Passion of the Christ combined, and be the only challenger to Spider-Man at the top of the summer BO.

Several of the guys who worked on both shows (including Matt Groening) have said that they enjoyed working on Futurama more. That and Billy West & John Dimaggio are much more talkative than the Simpsons cast.

People might like it, it might even be a good movie. But it will have a big problem finding an audience. It is also from the same guys who made Godzilla and that alone has set alarm bells off in many heads. That's a large part of the problem. The big movies of the summer (Troy, Van Helsing, Spider-Man, Harry Potter) have all been advertising heavily for months. People are really anxious to see Troy & Spider-Man. That isn't happening with the Day After Tomorrow.

Jersey Girl does poor box office

I'm pretty sure Armageddon came out after Godzilla. I don't know and neither do most people. We just assumed it would be terrible, but nobody actually saw it. That's the point I was getting at. TDAT is getting much the same buzz The Core got, and it will get crushed coming out between Van Helsing (a likely bad film that will gross a lot regardless) and Troy.

IMDB.com User Ratings Armageddon: 5.7 Deep Impact: 5.9 Rottentomatoes.com Average Ratings (Cream of the Crop in Brackets) Armageddon: 5.1 (3.7) Deep Impact: 5.6 (5.8) ------------------------------------ These are hardly conclusive, but do give a general idea of what people think. If you check the breakdowns on imdb.com you will also notice that Deep Impact's ratings are less skewed. Armageddon scored in the high 6s among the under 18 crowd (ie. the idiot crowd) and much lower for over 18.

How long has it been since they saw them both? Armaggeddon is pretty much considered to be a video game with ridiculous characters and a story that you can't get into. Deep Impact, while flawed at least had more tension and the characters were people you cared about. One of Armaggedon's biggest flaws was killing off the most popular character (Owen Wilson's cowboy geologist) first. Regardless, certainly with the people I know, Armaggedon pretty much single-handedly killed the disaster genre. The Core was killed before it even hit theatres (nobody actually wanted to see it), and we are seeing a similar thing now with The Day After Tomorrow. TDAT will probably be one of the bigger flops of the summer (although Catwoman & King Arthur will do worse). Even those that liked Armaggedon tended to hate the Ben Affleck character, so that doesn't help him anyways. I actually don't mind Affleck, but even I wanted him to die in that film he whined so much. None of those had the hype of Pearl Harbor, and many of these people probably didn't even see a lot of them. Perhaps it was the disappointment factor, but regardless there are many people who absolutely loathe Pearl Harbor.

How long have you watched wrestling?

SNME in March 1988. My hook was Randy Savage & Ted Dibiase, especially when they were in the finals of the Wrestlemania IV tournament a couple of weeks later (as of airdate, not when it was taped).

I have to agree, but only when the hobbit actors are together... they are lots of fun to listen to (not that the other actors dont have interesting stuff to say, they do, but its not nearly as fun as the hobbit actors joking around). I wish they had the whole movie to themselves to comment on The Hobbits are the most entertaining, but you can also get plenty of insight from Ian McKellan, Christopher Lee & Sean Bean. Orlando Bloom & John Rhys-Davies are basically wastes of space and don't say anything they didn't already talk about on the documentaries.

I hear people mentioning Armaggedon & Pearl Harbor alot regarding Ben Affleck's successes. I would regard them as failures. Although they made a lot of money, there was a HUGE backlash against them down the road and hurt his image for future releases. These days Pearl Harbor is often considered to be one of the worst films ever made, and Deep Impact tends to be much more popular than Armaggedon among anyone older than 16. They had the same affect on Affleck's career as Batman & Robin did on the superhero genre. A financial success can still hurt a career if people end up hating it. I honestly think Affleck would be better off if he had not done those two films. People wouldn't hate him as much as they do now, even when he puts in good performances (like in Changing Lanes).

    Weekend Boxoffice Report

Opening weekends usually aren't what decide whether a sequel will be made, it's the second weekends that usually decide that. Opening weekends get the talks started but those talks have already started on Scooby 3 So sadly, I think "Scooby 3" was already in production and if the Scooby movie holds even 15-20 million next weekend then Scooby 3 will begin. Very true. Look at the Hulk, it made $62 million the first weekend and finished with $132 million. Don't look for a Hulk sequel anytime soon. Hulk 2 has already been confirmed. Whether Ang Lee will be back or not though is a different matter entirely.

  20. The success of Eddy Guerrero & John Cena can be directly attributed to the draft. Neither would have gotten the initial pushes that got them over if HHH was hogging all of the spot light. I get the feeling they would have pushed Benoit just as a career achievement thing anyways, but Cena & Eddy would be feuding on Velocity. Big Show is another one that got saved not only by the split, but by the move to Smackdown. So it does happen.

    Judgment Day has come

I actually like Bradshaw's new gimmick. It is just that it works more as a managerial type gimmick and Bradshaw can't cut it in the ring anyways. He would be a lot more valuable to the company managing (or 'investing' in) wrestlers like the Bashams or Charlie Haas. Guys who need a bit of a boost. Give him Big Show too, so that Bradshaw gets some credibility as a manager.

Just so you know what you're voting for...

Up here we have numerous strikes involving teachers, medical workers, public transit, transportation ministry, snow plow service, postal workers, etc. Essential services in the employ of the government. When some guy can't get needed surgery because hospital employees are on strike (and it has happened in Toronto), it has gone too far. Unions have their place, but there are essential services out there that should not have the right to.
