Agreed. They do give credit to the wrestlers for working hard, and are positive about that, but Bryan and Vinny are merciless about ripping into the writing and booking. I might upload the show that talks about the latest Impact, but I don't think the TNA fans here would appreciate it. Who cares? I consider myself a "fan" in that I follow TNA, which I can't say for WWE, but I still realize the company is far from being good. There really aren't many people around here cut from the Impact Zone/YouTube doofus cloth. Consider this one TNA fan saying it would be APPRECIATED!

WWE General Discussion - September 2007

Fair enough. Like I said, I'm not defending Huffman because I genuinely don't give a shit if he's with WWE or not. I'm more just saying I understand where he's coming from in quitting. -

I posted this stance in another thread, but given the snarky tone here it really deserves reiterating. Are people cutting Booker slack because he's a net favorite? Yes. However, is his stance understandable when obvious juicers like Batista are in no trouble, and the boss himself is jacked out of his mind? Yes. You don't punish people because they look like they might be on something. Batista is subject to same rules and policies as everyone else, and as far as we know, hasn't tested positive yet. As for McMahon, he's not on the payroll anymore as an active wrestler and is therefore not subject to testing. He's not pushing steroids on people. You can't assign blame to him because some net favorite got in trouble. Get real. It's not humanly possible to look like Batista and not be on something. It's just not. If I showed up to my job looking drunk or stoned, I'd get fired without having to take a drug test. Granted my workplace is much different, but I look at it like this: if I got suspended for that, yet co-workers who were the boss' boys showed up to work looking high or drunk were getting raises, and the boss was showing up looking high or drunk, it'd piss me off and I'd quit. All this shit about getting tough on drug use in the WWE is just that...shit. You can look at certain people and know they're on juice. As for McMahon not being an active wrestler, it doesn't matter because him being roided out of his mind just furthers the (true) notion that the Wellness Policy and all this egregious outrage coming out of Stamford is more bullshit. Personally I don't give a fuck about Booker T. being suspended or not. I don't really watch WWE programming much any more. My point is I can understand why the man Robert Huffman would quit over this hypocrticial company stance. It's a goddamn joke and yes, I can assign blame. It's actually quite easy when this organization is run by a meathead who passive-aggressively makes it clear you only get pushed if you're on juice (males) or have fake tits (women). All this cracking down is a huge, stinking crock and really, really superficial facade to try to look OK during this wave of public outcry. -

I'm not saying they're going to "suck," per se, but they're just going to be the usual TNA garbage matches and stupid gimmicks that we've seen a hundred times. Abyss will bleed like a stuffed pig again, thumbtacks and glass will come into play, the reverse battle royal will look hokey and fake like last time, a bunch of tables will be broken, excessive chairshot, etc. And all that stuff will lead absolutely nowhere and they'll do it again the following month. Ah, Ok. Yeah, I agree with that.
-
I don't get the "these matches will suck." TNA does a lot of stuff wrong, but their PPV matches generally aren't one of those things. The endings might not be the best, but the matches themselves are usually quite good.

This is something that's been touched upon in the WWE folder, but what if WWF had gone under in 1997? Would ECW have added the old WWF fans to become No. 2 to WCW?

God, the Goldberg WWE run was like Vince McMahon's final FUCK YOU to WCW fans. -
Is it not the stigma he now has in American Wrestling? People give him 'X-Pac' heat cos they think its cool, well, probably not everyone, but seriously the guy needs a break - though he did have sex with Chyna so yeah Sucks, but he's a real target of smark fans. His last TNA run he worked his ass off and put on great matches with Raven, Jerry Lynn and AJ Styles. Now in AAA (Mexico) he's having great matches in an awesome stable I just mentioned above.

Insert obligatory anti-TNA comment here.

I really gotta go with cabbageboy here. I was a huge DDP mark from when I first got into WCW (fall '96) until this time. His first career title win was something a lot of WCW fans wanted to see -- in '98 I would have considered him the No. 2 face behind Goldberg. But that first title win, which should have been special, was botched pretty badly. I for one felt pretty slighted by the whole run -- winning the title only because of Savage's help, jobbing it to Sting and turning heel inexplicably, unceremoniously losing to Nash at the next PPV. None of it made sense, and it was a piss-off for DDP fans.

"I Can't Believe That Got Over!!!"

First time I saw Rikishi on Heat, I thought there was no chance he'd get over. Turning him heel with the Austin angle was a bad move, it killed his momentum. That summer he had slowly progressed from dancin' jolly Islander to a legit bad-ass with the Val Venis feud and deep KOTR run. -
I want Waltman back, but as part of a stable with Sabu, Killings and Konnan as either manager. Yeah, I'm way too into AAA for my own good.

Does the younger generation remember WCW?

Russo's was worse from the standpoint of putting the final nail in the coffin, that's true and killing any hope. The coffin was already built, the ditch dug and the headstone carved by the time he put that final nail in, though. Me personally, I found Nash's stretch much much more difficult to watch. Like I said, I preferred Russo's for the simple reason new guys were getting a shot, even if it was under ridiculous circumstances. I also think something that made Russo's run more damaging was WWF was getting really good during his two runs, especially the second. That second Russo run, WCW was up against the Jericho-Benoit series, Kurt Angle's rise, Rock-HHH, Undertaker's return -- that was arguably the all-around best period of WWF's popularity. I guess I also dislike that Nash tenure more because it was done solely to make himself the top guy. Every angle in that period (except for the tag team stuff with the Jersey Boys, Benoit/Malenko and Raven/Saturn which was great) was awful. The Nash laundry list was just embarassing: - Nash as Austin-like rebel champ when the whole world knew he was booking - A near-crippled Macho Man as the top heel - A Sting heel turn no one wanted to see - ARLISS~! - Nash dumping feces on people - No Limit Soldiers - "Hardcore" wrestling that the announcers shit on, culminating in a tournament that injured half the roster - Bagwell in boxing matches against Piper, Cat in kickboxing. Why draw attention to the fact your fighting isn't real? Dumb And in the summer of '99, WWF booking wasn't that great. I think this period really got the ball rolling against WCW. Anyway, I realize it's a matter of preference, just giving you my thoughts on it. -
YES! I remember that match vividly because it was Mike Awesome vs. DDP, both guys I was a huge mark for, and if memory serves, it was Awesome's first WCW match.
-
What's that? I missed most of the invasion angle. The first WCW match was Booker vs. Bagwell, and it was AWFUL. Just a totally abysmal match. The crowd was dead anyway because it was held in the Pacific Northwest, not exactly WCW territory. Why they didn't kick off WCW in the South is a mystery. So the match is shit in front of a dead crowd and made any hope of WCW as a standalone entity die.
-
Man oh man, I'm surprised the ring didn't get sucked into a vortex because of the combined ego in that match.
-
People 'round these parts who bitch that TNA is "worse than WCW ever was" need to go back and watch tapes from the summer of '99. I know we were talking about it in the WCW thread in General Wresling cabbage, but for the sake of others in this thread I'd like to reiterate my stance that Kevin Nash's run as WCW ranks as arguably the worst mess in wrestling the last 20 years.
-
I'm not going to pat Booker T. on the back for leaving because he got busted. Then again, I'm not taking the apparent opposite stance of "it's his own fault." Yeah, to a degree it is since 'roids are illegal. However, I can understand him being pissed when obvious juicers like Batista are in no trouble, and the fuckin' BOSS is on them.
-
And to Hogan, no less....TWICE! What was the deal there anyway? Was Savage stuck in a no-win situation here, since Hogan could use his creative control clause just to ruthlessly fuck with him? God, that creative control clause was the bane of WCW existence. Someone else here might know better than me, but I wouldn't be surprised if that's why Macho is always challenging Hogan to street fights nowadays.
-
Not that it makes any less of a goofy booking decision, but Lethal losing goes with the Savage gimmick, since Macho used to lose the title immediately after winning it when he was in WCW. EDITED for grammar error

True, it wasn't the best collection of workers by any stretch, but I did like the proposed plan of Goldberg systematically running through the group before getting to Steiner. Those two always worked well together. It's strange, I was a workrate fan from about '97 on but for some reason marked out like crazy for Goldberg. -

Corkscrew_Senton replied to Boxer's topic in General Wrestling
It really is a shame that WCW gets so badly buried, when it was what rekindled my interest in wrestling. In '96 I still watched WWF, but only sparingly. I happened on Nitro one night and saw Hulk, someone who just a few years earlier had killed much of my interest, as an awesome heel. He was dropping legs on Savage, spray painting him while Elizabeth cried and fans threw trash in the ring. It was surreal, and it was a raw emotional moment. Then I tuned in every week and was blown away by people like Ultimo Drago, Jushin Liger, Dean Malenko, etc. The NWO storyline was why I started watching, but the amazing undercard kept me glued to the TV for the entire show. Even after Starrcade '97 when things started going down hill, I kept watching 'til the company's death just because I knew the company had the potential to turn things around. And what's crazy is they tried so many times to turn things around. There was: - Nash in charge summer of '99, which IMO is in the running for worst post-NWO era. - The first Russo run in the fall and early winter. This one was weird because I could tell they were trying to copy WWF attitude, and while everyone shits on this stretch some good guys were getting pushes. Scott Hall was finally starting to get booked like World Champion material, Bret Hart became champion, Revolution and the Animals were in the spotlight including a very strong Benoit push. Granted all the angles that gave these guys there pushes were ludicrous, and any foreign or cruiser wrestler got buried, so I wouldn't call this a "good" era by any means. It was at least better than Nash's. - Kevin Sullivan from Jan. 2000 to the reset, which rivals Nash's run for worst era in the final years. The return of Hulkamania was enough to make me wretch, the Scott Hall/Nash/Sid/Jarrett stuff made zero sense, Tank Abbott was fighting people for jackets and Booker T. was fueding over an f'ing letter. Kidman and Vampiro started getting pushed, which was good, but that was surrounded by shit. - Russo from April to fall 2000 was maddening. The New Blood could have and should have saved WCW, but of course the old fuckers refusing to play ball killed it. Of course, it didn't help that Russo booked David Arquette in the main event and nightly title changes and swerves. The New Blood angle still frustrates me when I think about it. Had it been the older guys as heels, a faction of face young guys led by Russo (which could have worked -- he came across as a face at Bash at the Beach when lining up Booker T. for the main event and that shoot should have been his whole character), and a renegade heel faction of young guys who want to run the company it would have been outstanding. And of course, eliminating the ridiculous shit like "Viagra on a Pole" and "Mike Awesome: fat chick thriller" was a must. - Fall 2000 to the end...how depressing to think about this era. Things finally started to come together but it was too late. The cruiserweight division was treated like it should be: an athletic showcase, even expanded with the tag belts. The Magnificient Seven taking over made for a great main event story. When I read about the sale on the Net I really hoped Bischoff could work something out to keep this WCW going. Man, writing this post bummed me out, haha. -
