Guest papacita Posted July 4, 2002 Report Posted July 4, 2002 Back in the day, the WWF PPV's used to be predictable, with there usually being a reasonable split in match results based on face/heel lines (I.E. A heel would win the 1st match, the face the 2nd, or 2 heels win and 2 more faces win...etc.). But one thing about Mind Games that struck me as strange was that just about all faces went over. Savio over Bradshaw Henry over Lawler Owen and Bulldog over the Smokin Gunns (O and B were the fan favorites going into this one) Taker over Goldust Now...(random "I WAS THERE" plug in 5...4...3...2...1...) I was there that night, and right before the ME between Shawn and Kind, I turned to him, and I said "Friend...all the good guys won...so you know that means Shawn's losing the title"...and he said "Yup!" Now...strangly enough, Shawn DIDN'T lose the title. Now I marked the fuck out like a 13 year old HBK fan (which I was), but I just always found it weird that ALL faces won. Which brings me to this question...was Mankind originally booked to win the title at Mind Games?
Guest Caliban Posted July 4, 2002 Report Posted July 4, 2002 I don't think so, because the event was originally scheduled to be headlined by Shawn/Jose Lothario vs Vader/Jim Cornette. The whole lineup of the event was changed a few weeks before the event because it wasn't considered PPV calibre.
Guest dreamer420 Posted July 4, 2002 Report Posted July 4, 2002 mankind was too early in his wwf run to get the title too. he was only month in before he got the shot. the match made him look great though and probably gave vince and the boys more respect for mick.
Guest bob_barron Posted July 4, 2002 Report Posted July 4, 2002 I heards Mankind was supposed to win and HBK threw a fit but that doesn't seem to make sense to me.
Guest RetroRob215 Posted July 4, 2002 Report Posted July 4, 2002 I heard that the finish was changed on the spot, but Mankind was never scheduled to win the title.

Actually, Mick was around quite a while before that match. He came in around April of '96, Mind Games was Sept. of '96.
Guest dreamer420 Posted July 5, 2002 Report Posted July 5, 2002 still that is only a matter of months and remember that he was coming in from ecw at that time.
Guest Choken One Posted July 5, 2002 Report Posted July 5, 2002 If I recall, Foley said that he was going over Shawn but the finish was changed midmatch (You can clearly see McMahon telling Hebner the new finish). Look at Foley's reaction when Hebner crouches down to him. He's being told te changed finish (I never caught Michaels being told).
Guest Incandenza Posted July 5, 2002 Report Posted July 5, 2002 How was the finish changed, though? Was Mankind suppose to get the title, or was HBK supposed to get the pin instead of the DQ finish that wound up happening?
Guest Austin3164life Posted July 5, 2002 Report Posted July 5, 2002 I doubt there was any way the booking team was going to pull the plug on Shawn's god reign that year. ......
Guest dreamer420 Posted July 5, 2002 Report Posted July 5, 2002 i don't know about this middle of the match switch either. sounds too fishy!!
Guest Choken One Posted July 5, 2002 Report Posted July 5, 2002 I may be way off base but I'm pretty sure that Foley said he was getting the title. However, that would have been horrible business in the end. I'm betting Vince wanted Foley to look stronger, thus no pinfall lost and gave him a DQ win.
Guest dreamer420 Posted July 5, 2002 Report Posted July 5, 2002 i just can't it happening. foley was too new with the company at this point and vince would never haven't taken the title from his precious shawn and put in on an ecw reject. that would never take place. as for foley being told he wasn't going to win the title during the match, i'm not buying into that either. what could vince have seen during that terrific match that would have made him change his mind on the finish.
Guest HartFan86 Posted July 7, 2002 Report Posted July 7, 2002 OK, I just watched the match again on Foley's DVD and here's exactly what happened: They did the tape bump to the outside and Vince immediately threw his headset off and got up. They cut to an angle of Foley/HBK on the ground and Vince is basically shouting orders to Hebner. Shawn hears what Vince says and you can see him shake his head and go "No, No." They then get back into the ring and finish with the Vader run-in. After watching this, I'm assuming: 1. Vince told Hebner to take it home, but HBK wanted to keep going. 2. Vince told Hebner to let HBK/Foley know that Foley was coming out as champion, but HBK said "No, No." Scott Keith reported Mankind was suppose to come out as champion, so who knows.
