What 2002 releases do you have?

I forgot to mention Eminem, and the only reason I have the ...Trail of Dead CD is because of recommendations of people on this board, but it is cool to see that a lot of people have it.

The only things I've bought from '02: Andrew W.K. and the NiN live album.

I do, however, plan to pick up the new RHCP on Tuesday, because I'll be damned if "By The Way" isn't the catchiest damn song I've heard since their "Rollercoaster of Love." I've always been a fan of their more melodic stuff rather than the speed-funk (which is, in itself, pretty swank), and this looks like an even further evolution for 'em. Booyah.

Also have a burn of Source Tags and Codes, but I ended up liking Madonna,, Trail of Dead's first full-length, a goodly bit more than it. That's the one I actually own.

* ...And You Will Know Us By the Trail of Dead - Source Tags & Codes

* Blackalicious - Blazing Arrow

Dave Matthews Band - Winter Olympics 2002 (BOOTLEG~!)

Green Day - Surprise Gig at CBGB Studio (BOOTLEG~!)

Lisa Loeb - Cake and Pie

Unwritten Law - Elva (edited?! damn reviewer's copy...)

VA - Japan for Sale volume two

Wilco - Yankee Hotel Foxtrot

* X-Ecutioners - Built From Scratch

I think that's it. I also have a ton of promo singles that I'm not going to bother looking for and typing up because you can't buy them and most of them aren't even that good. The only ones I'd really recommend I've marked with a *. It DOES seem like this year sucks music-wise, and I thought last year was pretty bad... at least there were a ton of reissues and good stuff near the end of the year. If I fish out anything else, I'll edit and re-add it.

And I know I'm going to catch flack for not recommending Wilco, but I just can't bring myself to do it. Although I really like a lot of the songs, the rest I'm just indifferent to, and even though I still have yet to hear all of Summer Teeth I've liked all the songs on that album I've heard so far. When I recommend something that means that even non-band fans (and as a stretch non-genre fans) should be able to enjoy it just as much as I have, and I just don't see that happening with Wilco. I barely see it happening with ...And You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead, but I think people are starting to look for meaning within their heavy music, and that's what that album is all about, at least to me (and I normally don't like heavy music). It's the same reason I didn't recommend Japan for Sale vol. 2, because if you didn't already like that style of music, with the exception of a few songs you'd think I was a fool.

Judging by my father's even-more-negative-than-usual reaction to Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, I'd say you're right. But there are a few catchy songs on there and the production is superb, so I don't see any reason why reasonably hip people wouldn't like the album. It's got "Jesus, etc." How could you not like that?

Personally my favorite song on the album is "Heavy Metal Drummer".

Hey BottleRocket, how is the new Imperial Teen? They're from the area, and I remember that "Yoo Hoo" song they did that got played a lot in '98 or '99. I meant to buy the album but never did. Is the new album or any of their other albums worth buying?

I might be biased since I'm a big fan of the group, but I really like the new Imperial Teen record. It's just plain fun sexy pop. Handclaps, harmonies, and hooks. Perfect for summer.

In terms of how it stacks up to their previous work, "On" is a bit more synthy and New Wave-influenced than its predecessors, but still just as good.

I think their first album ("Seasick"), however, is still my favorite. It's a little more guitar/garage oriented than the two follow-ups and the hooks are slightly more memorable. It features boy-girl vocals, sexually-charged lyrics, and supposed references to frontman Roddy Bottum's (Faith No More) friend Kurt Cobain in at least two songs. Fabulous.

The middle record ("What Is Not To Love") is maybe a tad darker, a smidge more experimental, and a bit more subtle, but it still delivers the goods on songs like "Yoohoo" (which also appeared in the movie "Jawbreaker") and "Lipstick."

Imperial Teen comes highly recommended from this very biased listener.

Yes, I believe it was originally released in 2000.

AWK - I get wet

Ten benson - satan kidney pie

those are awesome but pretty much the only new things i've bought. I have the hives 'your new favourite band' as well, but i think that was last year. The only other things out this year i want would probably be the Tom Waits ones, custom and the butthole surfers rarities collection.

Oh, and I also picked up "Course of Nature"'s "Superkala". They did that song "Caught in the Sun" which was featured on the FIFA World Cup. Definetly worth a listen.
