Guest HartFan86 Report post Posted July 6, 2002 On Wham Bam Bodyslam!, they have a match from the Cumberland County Civic Center in Portland, Maine (the arena that is like 10 minutes away from me) with Owen vs. Bret in a Lumberjack match for the WWF Title. This match looks somewhere around from 1994. Bret has Owen in the Sharpshooter and Owen is tapping. Anvil runs in after the ref is distracted by an altercation between Well Dunn and The Smoking Gunns (both teams are lumberjacks) and clotheslines Bret from behind. Owen PINS Bret for the 1-2-3 and is awarded the belt and announced on the PA system. The ring fills with the heel lumberjacks as they put Owen on their shoulders and go nuts to a STUNNED crowd. The babyfaces argue the decision as a few refs come down to tell the ref what happened. They watch the replay on the video wall and the ref restarts the match...followed by Bret eventually beating him. I just couldn't believe Owen actually was awarded the title. I've heard about this before, and I'm proud to say I have it on tape.

Guest Daredevil21 Report post Posted July 6, 2002 I too own the tape, and even though I was surprised to see Owen win the title for a moment, I had heard about it earlier. Anyone who read the WWF magazine back in the day will probably remember an article about Owen winning the title. I believe Vic Venom (Russo) penned the article in which he bitched about the title being taken away from Owen. The match was a great one, despite the goofy false title switch. Actually, the entire tape is good, which is surprising, considering what a terrible time it was put out (1995).

Guest HartFan86 Report post Posted July 6, 2002 The Fink sounded like he was giving a death announcement from the somber tone of his voice. That is SO true. He's like "And NEEEEW World........Wrestling.........Fed...er....ation....."
Guest Human Fly Report post Posted July 7, 2002 I always thought the WWF should've had Owen win the title from Bret, even if he turned around and lost it back to Bret a few months later. I also thought the WWF should've had Owen beat HBK for the belt but that's neither here nor there.
Guest dreamer420 Report post Posted July 7, 2002 i didn't think owen was championship material back at the time. he had insane heat and was wrestling brilliant matches but he wasn't ready to lead the wwf as champion.

Guest MillenniumMan831 Report post Posted July 7, 2002 Don't know the exact date, but it was at the last SuperStars taping before SummerSlam 1994.
Guest Grenouille Report post Posted July 13, 2002 Does anyone know the date that match occured? Thanks, Andy August 17, 1994. I still have my ticket stub. What a weird feeling when Owen was announced champion. Too bad it never really happened for a real reign.
Guest bps "The Truth" 21 Report post Posted July 13, 2002 The only time in his career that he was a beleivable world champion material was the night he made his return to Raw after Bret got screwed in Montreal.

Too bad I was watching Nitro in those days and didn't give a f about WWF. How did he present himself that night? What happened?
Guest bps "The Truth" 21 Report post Posted July 13, 2002 As I recall he came out while McMahon was in the ring...wearing black pants and a black top and shades and just pretty much being very cool and very over. I think part of his promo was even about getting respect and so on. That's when they named him the black Hart isn't it?

Guest dreamer420 Report post Posted July 16, 2002 how about when they had jim neidhart join dx only to kick the dogshit out of him. like anyone believed that jim was going to be a member of dx.
Guest MillenniumMan831 Report post Posted July 17, 2002 Even though you knew it was coming from a mile away, it was still pretty sad to see Bret's original WWF tag partner humiliated as a message to The Hitman.
Guest dreamer420 Report post Posted July 17, 2002 i can't believe neidhart agreed to go along with it in the first place. i think it must have been his ticket out of the wwf as i think it was his last appearance before joining bret and davey boy in the wcw. Guest HartFan86 Report post Posted July 17, 2002 From what I heard, Anvil was forced into doing it basically. Sad, but that's life.
Guest TheSmarkzone Report post Posted July 17, 2002 They could have just as easily put the title on Owen at Survivor Series 1994 instead of Bob Backlund. It's not like it mattered...Backlund jobbed it to Diesel a few days later.
Guest Your Olympic Hero Report post Posted July 17, 2002 LOL.. it's sad that the refs would even care about the Smokin Gunns or Well Dunn getting into a fight while a World title match is going on. TIMOTHY WELL AND STEVEN DUNN... remember that load of crap? The NEW Generation, BABY!
