Which consoles play DVD movies?

Just out of curiosity. I know PS2 plays DVD's, and I think X-Box does but needs a special remote or something. What about 'Cube and Dreamcast?

 

And Ps2's don't need a special remote or anything, do they?

X-box does need a special hook-up... I think its like $20, and is also about 20 times better then PS2's DVD player

 

Dreamcast doesn't have the ability to, and I think they are in the middle of making an add-on DVD player for the cube...

Lik-Sang this is the only place that I know that sells a GameCube DVD player, which sells modified game systems. Standard Gamecube consoles will not play DVDs, because the game disc are so small.

 

As for the Dreamcast, if it did the system would of had a longer shelf life.

Chris...just stick your DVD in your PS2 and use the controller for your remote.

 

I think why the X-box is better is that it doesn't scratch or skip as much as the ps2...i dunno

I agree. My PS2 skipped DVD's a lot and I just went out and bought a DVD player.

Plus, the $20 or so you have to pay for the X-Box DVD player is made up for the fact that you don't have to buy a memory card.

Well, on the PS2, which was my sole DVD player for about a year, many DVDs have several small problems with playing them and the older models can't even play dual layer DVDs. On Xbox, because of the DVD kit, there are no such problems. It can play pretty much any DVD.

That shows which discs have problems. It says there that you can update your PS2 DVD driver if you buy that $20 remote, but even the newest one seems to have many more problems than the Xbox. There was an old plan, announced in late 2000, for Dreamcast to have a DVD add-on which would play movies and also the new games, but it didn't pan out.

My DVDs are quite visibly better on the Xbox than the PS2 IMO, although I know some prefer the PS2's playback. It's more or less a split decision in all, I guess.

I have never had the PS2 mess up a DVD either, it just doesn't run some of them properly.

I rented "The Royal Tenenbaums" on DVD and tried it out. The movie played, but the color kept fading from really dark to normal to really dark to normal. I messed with all the settings and nothing fixed it. The guy I talked to about it said it sounded like a messed up DVD, but still... I've already pre-ordered LOTR on DVD, and if it doesn't work, then... bleh.

That's exactly the problem. The TV I use in my room is a TV/VCR combo and I have that fading problem in a few of my DVDs, but when I move it to the living room TV, they work fine.

That may be it - I've got it hooked up to one of those TV/VCR hybrids, with the VCR built in. I'll try hooking it up to a different TV - thanks.

I just bought a PS2 yesterday, and while reading through the setup instructions, it says not to hook it up through a VCR when you want to watch a DVD. Seems like you guys already kinda figured that out though.

The long and short of this is that 'da Box's future is in some question. The Cube's not doing so hot either, but that's not here nor there. My point is that it might be worth a few DVD headaches to have the superior and likely longer-lasting game system. Halo is nice and all, but it doesn't justify passing up the PS2.

 

And on a semi-related and quirky note, there IS one system rivaling the PS2's numbers.......the Game Boy Advance.

Actually, it's not even close to reflecting national sales. Even as a big Gamecube supporter, I must point out that in the US the Xbox has outsold the Gamecube. On a worldwide scale Gamecube(4.1 million) is just slightly ahead of Xbox(3.9 million) and much of this gap comes from Japan. Xbox is number 2 in North America, it's very close in Europe, can't say which is in the lead, and Gamecube is way ahead of Xbox in Japan. The numbers you posted would accurately reflece national numbers in Japan, but in the US it'd be something like this:

That shouldn't really come as a surprise, though. I mean, there's no competition for the GBA, it's downward compatible with the GB, and it's cheaper than buying a PDA to play games...
