Mayors wrestle for good cause

The rain couldn't stop the political fireworks at Sweetwater's Fourth of July bash.

 

A crowd of over 500 endured the downpour to see what was billed as a ''mayor smackdown'' -- a wrestling match Thursday night between Sweetwater Mayor Jose ''Pepe'' Diaz and Davie Mayor Harry Venis.

 

Despite Venis' edge -- he is a professional wrestler -- Diaz didn't back down and predicted an underdog win.

 

''I'm ready to rock and roll all over the mayor of Davie,'' Diaz said before the bout. ``We're prepared for war. Miami-Dade County is not going to lose to Broward.''

 

It didn't.

 

With the crowd chanting ''Pepe!'' Diaz pulled an upset, pinning Vicious Vinnie, as he's known in pro wrestling, to win the tag-team match that included Thunder Heart Joe Gomez in Diaz's corner and Taskmaster Kevin Sullivan on Venis' side.

 

The grudge match was settled at the top of a wrestling card at Sweetwater's Ronselli Park, as part of the city's annual Independence Day event, which also featured food, music and fireworks.

 

The bouts raised money for the Jorge Mas Youth Center's ballet program.

 

''I think everyone had a great time,'' said Venis, who added this isn't over. ``I found out after the match that the referee was from Sweetwater. I want a rematch one-on-one, and it'll be in Davie this time.''

 

No telling if there will be a rematch, Diaz said, so for now, ``Dade County's honor is safe.''
