Guest Zack Malibu Report post Posted July 9, 2002 So, just when I finally start accumulating a decent cash flow, stop buying so many unnecessary things, I find out that business is a little slow, and I'll be getting only about 30-32 hours a week (as opposed to the 40-45 I typically work) at my job. While time off is something most people long for, with my job it's not a hassle, since I have almost 2 weeks worth of vacation days, and I can pretty much work when I want, which leaves me time to do things with my girlfriend, friends, etc. But as a young guy (21) who's returning to school in the fall (and paying out of his own pocket...more school and less work won't be pretty!) and just got a new car from his parents (not given...I bought their car from them), the time off from work may hurt more than it can help. Of course, it'll probably pick up in the next few weeks or so, but then I have to worry about my girlfriend leaving for college at the end of the summer, so I'll probably need more days off than usual to get the last couple day trips/romantic dates/quality time in. I've got a good job, with a boss who's very fair, and employees who I get along with great. I also get unlimited net access from work, and can pretty much just 'veg out' at the computer and do things like visit all my buddies here at the Forum~! (shameless plug.) I guess I just felt like venting.
Guest evenflowDDT Report post Posted July 9, 2002 Dude, that really sucks. Last time I had a job, since I was a seasonal worker (which they never told me until one day I called for my schedule and they just said "we don't need you anymore") they kept dropping my hours. First I was at 20 hours a week (which was perfect because I was still in school, and this allowed for me to work weekends, Fridays, and Wednesdays and still have free time on the other days for homework and hanging out), then after about two weeks they dropped me to 15, then after another week 10, then 5, then they just said they didn't need me anymore. Even though I don't have the need for money like you do for the car and school (well, I will need it for school come September), I wanted a job because I get BORED TO DEATH at home with nothing to do, and even though it's cool talking to you guys, I still kinda feel like I'm wasting my life just vegetating in front of my laptop waiting for someone to actually be home or get a day off (because all my friends have jobs) when I call them. Not to mention that being broke sucks because I can't buy any new DVDs or CDs to keep me company. So far though, nobody wants to hire me for the summer since I'm leaving in September... that's really annoying, looks to be another summer of vegetating. Way to go for life after high school, eh? Anyway, sorry for co-venting Zack, but I hope things pick up for you soon, since you need the money more than I do (I'd probably just save it up and waste it on a DVD box set at Amazon anyway). Guest Zack Malibu Report post Posted July 9, 2002 Anyway, sorry for co-venting Zack, but I hope things pick up for you soon, since you need the money more than I do (I'd probably just save it up and waste it on a DVD box set at Amazon anyway). Heh, that's exactly the kind of thing I'm trying to avoid doing. I'm notorious for walking into a store and walking out with no less than 3 new movies. My local Wal-Mart is well known for having weekly "video blowouts", where they get a ton of VHS/DVD's from a dealer, and sell them for incredibly cheap prices. I seriously have so many movies right now, there are some that I bought nearly 2 years ago, still in the wrapping, waiting to be watched. Plus, being the prep that I am, I'm used to buying fairly expensive clothes, but I now pretty much just hit up Old Navy and stores like that, trying to save as much as I can. The way I look at it, come September, when most of my friends, (as well as myself) are back in school, and with my girlfriend away at school, it'll give me more time to save money. I won't be going out as much (I'll probably relegate myself to just chilling at my house, or someone elses), and I can work more, or at least work later, and not have to worry about rushing out of work to do something. I'll probably be able to accumulate more that way, and by then business will definetly be busier (holiday season and all), and I may finally have my raise. Of course, note that I mentioned it would be holiday season, so a lot of money is gonna be invested in Christmas gifts. Geez, at the rate I'm going, I'll be living at home till I'm 45, lol. And thanks for the compliment, 'Flow. I was pretty proud of that promo.
Guest swan Report post Posted July 9, 2002 I feel for you. At this time last year I was working 50-60 hours a week. About 6 weeks ago they knocked us done to 32. I was working between 40-45 at the time. What really hurts is the fact I'm am building a house(not bad for being only two years out of school huh?) at the moment and it makes things a little tighter. Guest HBK16 Report post Posted July 9, 2002 I work 90 hours a week. It sucks though cuz I am really lazy. But I am bringing in bank so I don't really mind. Just when I feel like quitting, I think of the check.
Guest Sandman9000 Report post Posted July 9, 2002 I'm working at Sears for the summer, in the recieving department. It's not a bad job; great exercise, reasonable pay. The only problem is that now all of the idiots are coming out of their caves and are coming in, looking for the air conditioners that are at the warehouse. We give these people instructions, and yet they still can't follow them. Goddamn. And I guess this is now the official "bitch about yer job" thread.
Guest Zack Malibu Report post Posted July 9, 2002 I hear ya on the idiots part, Sandman. At my job, we sell a lot of toys and collectibles, and I can't count how many times a day I'll get retarded calls from kids anywhere from 6-17 asking dumb questions, pretending to have a credit card, or just outright cranking us. Thanks to the wonders of caller ID, I usually take care of the problem. I warn them not to hang up, and that I can trace their number to their address. I also tell them that the phone calls are taped, and handed into the police if I catch them lying. Usually, these lame ass credit card frauds result in some little sap crying his eyes out over the phone, stating how much he doesn't want to go to jail. I get quite a kick out of it, stemming from my belief that if they were the ones trying to steal, I'm not the asshole. BUT...I should have put this in the "how big an asshole are you" thread. Guest TUS_02 Report post Posted July 9, 2002 Haha, I have to work outside for 6 hours a day, sometimes 9. The first few days last week were horrible, the humidity was through the roof. Today was also bad in terms of temp/humid. Anyway, it's my job to pretty much take the complaints from the parents. It's usually not that bad. But on the first day, a parent saw that her childs counselors weren't paying attention, so this mom swooped her child up, bitched at me, bitched at the counselors and left. I find out today that her husband is writing a letter to newspaper. This person also "claims" that everytime she tried going to the park and rec building, she would start to cry, and yesterday was the first day she could actually talk about it and what have you. Now, the counselors responcible were disciplined accordingly and everyone has increased their "watching kids" abilities. But, if that's not over reacting, I don't know what is. Parents always amaze me. That story being the exception, they always assume everything is our fault... like today, this father went to pick up her daughter, but she was already signed out... so he starts throwing a fit, calls his family and finds out the mom picked her up. No appology either. AHHHHH
