Best Ad-Libbed Finish. Ever.

Recommended Posts

Guest The Hollywood Fashion Plate

Just watched the main event of RAW and thought the other 9 guys did a good job BS'ing a finish, which got me thinking: what's the best finish that's ever happened when 1 guy got seriously injured midmatch?

I'd say Perfect-Rooster at SSlam '89, where Rooster blows out his knee. He rolls to the outside, where Perfect hammers away on him for 15 seconds, rams him chest-first into the apron, then hits a Perfect-Plex (applying no pressure to the injured knee) for the pin.

This reminds me of an NWA house show at Cobo Arena in Detroit.Eddie Gilbert was wrestling Kevin Sullivan.I couldn't tell you what happened to cause the injury but Sullivan suddenly pinned Gilbert out of seemingly nowhere.Medics worked on Gilbert for at least 15 minutes in the ring before they even tried to move him.If I remember correctly,Gilbert did something major to his knee.I do remember many assholes around me booing and bitching that it was taking to long and to get the next match in there.I thought it was pretty obvious it was legit since they were working on him so long.

The quickly improvised ending to the Guerrero-RVD ladder match after the ladder gave out from Rob was a good one.

Final Four Main Event, Bret/Vader/Taker/Austin....Austin blew out his knee and they improved EVERYTHING for the last 10 minutes (I think, haven't seen it forever) that led to Bret winning the title instead of Austin.

The worst improv was Owen/Austin @ Summerslam 97...but obviously you can't do much in that situation.

i think the funniest ad lib is Luger shoving the ref for the DQ and running for his life after Brody stopped selling his offence in that cage match.

they did a good job of covering in that match i would say.

my favourite was kurt angle knocking himself out before the main event at summerslam 2000.

HHH finishing with the quad injury. He went into the Walls of Jericho, which puts pressure right on the injury.

The Rock vs. Kurt Angle, No Way Out 2001

The referee messed up the three-count, so The Rock just picks Angle up and Rock Bottoms him again. And he makes sure the ref counts three

now, its been a while since i've read angle's book, but i'm pretty sure the concussion was supposed to be a work and he would go to the back and come out later, but he actually suffered a concussion, but did come out later anyways. at least thats what i remember.

Best was the Final Four matchup.

Worst was the WCW Sin match where Sid broke his leg, ruining the match. Then Animal returned, and ruined the match some more. But, much like the Austin/Owen match, there's not much you can do when one guy has one leg to stand on.

JR's "one legged man in an ass kicking contest" line would have fit perfectly into that match.

i know he was supposed to be gone from the match for awhile but he wasn't supposed to have smashed his head like that and really knocked himself goofy. he was even slurring his words on raw the next night.

i agree about the wcw sin ending too. this mystery man is hyped for weeks and once sid broke his ankle all animal could do was walk into the ring and hit sid with one punch. for how little time they had once sid was injured, they did all they could but it came off as looking weak.

Flair and Ricky Steamboat ad-libbed the ENTIRE 2/3 falls match from the Ragin' Cajun clash. Swear to god, Steamboat said that himself at Pillman 2000. They went in knowing Steamer was winning with a rematch later down the road, and that was it. improvising a ***** match? can't top that. He also said that he and flair wrestled at least 1000 times. As far as covering an injury or bad mishap, definitely the Final Four match, you can't even tell what happened really unless you know what to look for.

Not the best...or really a adlibbed finish. But RVD/Jerry Lynn, when Jerry broke his face on the floor. Rob stalled, which looked normal, pulled him in and tried to finish the match, but Jerry kept kicking out and telling him to keep going.

For covering an injury and actually changing the planned finish, I would have to go with Final Four 1997. They all knew that Austin was booked to win and once Austin blows out his left knee, you can't even tell when he does, and you can't even tell that the others realize what's going on until Bret throws Austin out, which led to his Championship crowning. Great improvisation by all four. It was a **** match in my opinion.....

this was brutal. lynn looked pretty wrecked after taking that fall and his face didn't look like he was going to continue on in that match. i was surprised when he kicked out after being covered for the first time.

The 12 man at Fall Brawl 2000

Orndorff gets injured, and Rey improvs an entire match with multiple opponents, dragging the rookies through a really good match

I would have to go with the Final Four match. I didn't even know the finish was improvised, which in my opinion is what truly matters. I just found out just now that the match ending was improvised because Austin blew out his knee.

Madusa/Hokuto--Madusa swore she would retire if she loses. She had a long stretch of offense, but then jumping off the top rope, she hyper-extended her knee. Freakish almost like Nash's. The fight had to be cut short, with Hokuto winning. Mean Gene berated her after the match, as she was being carried out, probably thinking it was a work. But the brave Madusa was crying, so even the fans knew she was really injured and yelled at Gene "Leave her alone".
