MLB All Star Game 2002

Recommended Posts

Baseball will always be the one sport that has a meaingful All-Star game. Nobody watches the Football game (and more people no show that) or the Hockey All-Star game or the NBA all-stars. The all star games of all sports mean nothing anymore. It's the side-show events that draw the most.

Slam Dunk contest.

Home Run Derby.

Hockey Shootout.

Perhaps we should just have a Talent show instead.

I like the NHL skills competition. All sports should just do that, instead of having an actual game that bears no meaning on anything.

Baseball: HR Derby for hitters, Have the pitchers throw baseballs at milkcans or something.

Hockey: Keep the skills competition, that's all that's needed

Basketball: A shooting contest. With guns! Iverson will feel right at home. Seriously, do an all around skills competition, 3 point shooting, HORSE, slam dunk contest, and a three on three tournament or something.

Football: Wow, this all star game needs help. Do another all around skills competition, with passing, field goal kicking, and punting, with a few drills mixed in.

Nobody cares about the NBA All-Star Game because the players don't.

Nobody cares about the Pro Bowl because of the pussified rules. Sorry, but it's AFTER the season and you're worried about injuries? Yeesh.

The NHL All-Star Game would be fine if the goalies had a snowball's chance in hell.

Before Tuesday, I'd have said the baseball All-Star Game was the only one that mattered, but the tie more or less shot that to hell. But at least most of the players still give a shit about being there.

"Say we're in the 18th inning, so the pitchers that are in there are closers who have pitched three innings. Do you think they're calling the game because there's no more pitching?"

I see your point, but you're comparing apples to oranges. Even regular season games are played because they impact the standings, pennant races, draft order, etc. The World Series obviously has higher stakes. The All-Star game is an exhibition game that is basically a showcase for the fans. They get to see the players they deemed the best compete against each other. I don't care if anyone won or not. The fans got eleven innings of a very good game from the sixty best players in MLB. Anyone in attendance who said they went home cheated is an imbecile.

Besides, most 18-inning games -- especially in the postseason, where prime time games are the rule -- would be postponed because of local curfew laws. I think most ML cities stipulate that an inning can't start after 1:00 am; it might even be a baseball rule. The game is halted and resumed the next day. But in the World Series, you have to play until somebody wins, which just isn't the case in an exhibition game.

I believe the 1am thing is indeed an official baseball rule. Specifically, a new inning cannot start after 1am.
