For those who don't know, it's the first film written by Owen Wilson and Wes Anderson and it pretty much gives the Wilson brothers their start in Hollywood. I picked it up awhile back because I think Owen Wilson is the funniest man on the planet and I wasn't disappointed by this movie. It's just absolutely hilarious, and Owen Wilson just rules in it and I can see exactly why he started landing big roles. Has anyone else seen it?
Guest Incandenza Posted July 10, 2002 Report Posted July 10, 2002 I've seen it a number of times. Flawed, perhaps--some of the scenes come off a little awkward, but Anderson was rather new to this, and not everyone can make Citizen Kane their first time out--but I love it.
Guest Anorak Posted July 10, 2002 Report Posted July 10, 2002 I love Bottle Rocket as well, its one of those films you just want to recommend to people because you enjoyed it so much yourself first time around. I actually saw Bottle Rocket after i'd seen Rushmore and I feel its definately the equal of Anderson's second effort. Some of the filmmaking touches and directorial flourishes are a bit more pronounced than the rather more flat looking Rocket, the film is equally brilliant in terms of its story, characters and performances. Like Rushmore there are a lot of small details (ultra brief snippets of revealing dialogue and subtle visual language) that make it a deeper and more satisfying film on repeated viewings. Some films announce themselves loudly and self importantly when they are pretty empty underneath the surface, Wes Anderson's films seem to do the opposite.
