Guest swan Report post Posted July 10, 2002 What was the coolest underground concert you have been to and what kind of shit hole was it at? Me, I’m a big underground music lover and have been to hundreds of small scale shows but the one that really stands out is seeing Mercyful Fate with Angel Witch and a few other bands opening. It was at a shit hole club/bar in Clinton, IA called the Pig Pen. It was on the Sunday night following there headlining date at the Milwaukee Metal Fest. I think this was August 1998. All the bands played on a small riser set up in the basement of the school's cafeteria. It was a really fun night. Here's what The Dismemberment Plan wrote about the experience: "Tour thus far is fantastic again. Our second show was with the Slackers, who are my favorite contemporary ska band. We'd planned on packing up after we played to start our monster drive (Gambier, OH to Milwaukee, WI = 510 miles), but the second the Slackers took the stage, we all got sucked into the crowd. Every direction I looked I saw one of my bandmates dancing. God I love the rocksteady, and their brass is to die for. Our show was no slouchin' either. People danced and we got along well. The only scarey part was the bass shook the drop ceiling enough that dust from the panels was floating everywhere. Now asbestos is a thing of the past, right? Just checking. We rolled out around midnight and drove til about 4am central time, just north of Indianapolis got a Super 8 room for a four-hour nap. Up by 8, showered, gassed, fed and on the road by 9. Last time I went, Nasum was so badass it was like a 500 foot high brick wall falling on your face over and over again. I've never seen a drummer abuse a kit like that..They didn't play Inhale/Exhale, and we were all, "What the fuck? No way they're closing the set without that.." the crowd started getting a little ugly, and the dude's like "oh, you want to hear some more?" he goes to pick his pic up, and in the same motion, hits the first two chords...INHALE!
