Modest Mouse?

Guest What?

So far, I've only heard the songs "Doin' The Cockroach" and "It's all nice on Ice" but from just those two songs, I think MM kick ass.

What do you guys think?

If you like them, which CD should I buy of theirs?

They are pretty great. If you see the Interstate 8 CD anywhere, pick it up, it's great, but it's pretty rare these days I think. Maybe start with The Lonesome Crowded West or Making Nothing Out Of Something.

Woo! We were just talking about these guys on the "Recommend music" thread.

I love them. The two tracks you mention are from The Lonesome Crowded West, probably their best album. Buy it without hesitation. Building Nothing Out Of Something is also amazing, and This Is A Long Drive For Someone With Nothing To Think About trips me out every time I hear it.

Seriously, these guys are one of the most innovative and impressive acts recording today. And they tour like gangbusters, probably playing around 80 dates a year. The music is so amazingly earnest, complex, and altogether absorbing that rarely a week goes by that I don't give one of their albums a full spin. Modest Mouse is THE band I recommend to people, plain and simple. Dooo it.

I like them. The only pitfalls the band has are that Issac Brock's vocals are an acquired taste--I've seen his voice compared to that of a toothless old man--and that their albums are ridiculously long and rife with filler. Just one man's opinion, of course, but while I personally prefer Building Nothing Out of Something, I'd say The Moon and Antarctica is probably their most defined and concise statement.

Funny when a band's 59-minute album is their concise statement. The sprawl does get to me on Long Drive, and there are slight complaints to be fired when the bass-lick on "Trucker's Atlas" from goes on for 6 minutes after the rest of the song is over, barely changing a step.

Damn artsy indie kids! Still love em to death...just need a little over an hour to do it properly.

As a general rule, I'm partial to shorter albums. Not too short, like the 26 minute crap Weezer's been releasing lately or Nashville Skyline, but to the point where every song is worthwhile and nothing seems like an excuse to stretch the album to the maximum length of a compact disc. I have a whole theory about the CD doing significant damage to the album as an artform, but that's neither here nor there. I've just always felt that Modest Mouse could use dash more of the self-editing reflex.

But here I am disparaging a good band in a thread meant to celebrate them. Ignore me. Go out and buy their stuff. And..uh...get that "Royal Tenebaums" DVD. It's awesome.
