Guest BottleRocket Report post Posted July 11, 2002 I know he had 3 albums so don't point that out I know you said not to point it out, HOWEVER... Not only did he have only three albums, ONLY one was even released during his lifetime... My biggest problem with people deifying Biggie is that his career was so short. He was not the greatest emcee who ever lived. Yes, he had an engaging flow and was a fairly decent wordsmith, but the nature of the rap game is that artists burn out and fade away fairly quickly. Very few rappers are able to stay on top for more than a brief period. Having consistency and remaining relevent is very difficult to do in a genre that releases so many records and is prone to flavor-of-the-week allegiances. While we we never know the outcome because his life was cut short, I think there is a distinct possibility that Biggie would have fizzled out like so many other emcees, especially since he was so connected to a specific clique. Death Row, Wu-Tang, No Limit...no one can stay on top for long. With or without Biggie, Bad Boy would have fallen and the large man might have gone down with the ship had he still been around. Sure, Bad Boy was able to capitalize on his death and remain relevant for a short time after he passed, but in more recent times, all has not been well in Puffy's empire. Where is his stable of emcees... Craig Mack kicked flava in ya ear and then disappeared. Mase joined the Church. The Lox weren't Bad Boy for life. And, Shyne...well, he's in jail. Puffy's lost artists, had trouble with the law, and had quite a few commercial disappointments. If it weren't for him pushing remixes and a jailbait teen act he would have fallen all the way off the map. What we are left with in BIG is an artist full of potential with a great debut; a decent, but bloated follow-up; and a never-should-have-been released hodge-podge that tarnished his short career.
