Guest godthedog Report post Posted July 12, 2002 simple concept, ripped off from 'high fidelity': pick your 5 favorite songs that ended albums. for example, 'something in the way' from nevermind (or 'endless nameless' if you want to get technical). mine: beatles: 'a day in the life', from sgt pepper (best finale ever, will probably never be topped) the who: 'won't get fooled again', from who's next (textbook example of epic rock song, & they pull out all the stops) sarah mclachlan: 'fumbling towards ecstasy', from fumbling towards ecstasy (it just makes sense as the album's logical conclusion, after the songs of fear & doubt this is a really comforting track) john lennon: 'my mummy's dead', from plastic ono band (a nothing track in itself, but in the right context it makes the whole album scary) velvet underground: 'oh! sweet nuthin', from loaded (so sue me, i like this song better than 'sister ray') honorable mentions--tori amos: 'yes, anastasia' from under the pink, beatles: 'tomorrow never knows' from revolver, hendrix: 'voodoo child' from electric ladyland
Guest Cerebus The Aardvark Report post Posted July 12, 2002 Lemme have a crack at this... 1. "Disintegration"--The Cure, from the album Disintegration. On the original release, it is the last song; the CD has 2 bonus tracks. Probably my favourite song of all time; chaotic, depressing, energetic...it has everything. 2. "Dream Attack"--New Order, from the album Technique. Optimistic song after a series of generally pessimistic tracks; sometimes it's good to end things on a positive note. 3. "Omerta/The Vampire Lanois"--The Afghan Whigs, from the album 1965. Technically, they are two different songs, but "The Vampire Lanois" is an instrumental that continues from "Omerta", so I consider them to be one track. Just sleek stuff, with a faint hint of jazz. 4. "Indifference"--Pearl Jam, from the album Vs. My favourite song for roughly 5 years, it's difficult to let it go. Quiet and powerful, it definitely latches onto you, forcing you to listen to it again and again. 5. "Space-Dye Vest"--Dream Theater, from the album Awake. Just an overall great song. It's really effective if you've just broken things off (or, more accurately, had them break it off) with your girlfriend/boyfriend/tree/rock/chest of drawers/whatever you're into. Honourable mentions: "The Dancer"--PJ Harvey, from To Bring You My Love. "The Boy's Asleep"--Therapy?, from Semi-detached. "All Is Full Of Love"--Bjork, from Homogenic. "A Murder Of One"--Counting Crows, from August & Everything After. "Butterfly"--Weezer, from Pinkerton. "Clean"--Depeche Mode, from Violator. "Milk"--Garbage, from Garbage. Enjoy. Guest bps "The Truth" 21 Report post Posted July 12, 2002 My favorite song was the last track of an album. "Coma" on Use Your Illusion 1. Other than that I'd have to think...which I am not prepared to do at this time.

Guest Incandenza Report post Posted July 12, 2002 "Fillmore Jive"--Pavement, from Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain "Kiss Me, Son of God"--They Might Be Giants, from Lincoln "Sister Ray"--Velvet Underground, from White Light, White Heat "Soon"--My Bloody Valentine, from Loveless "Suffer Little Children"--the Smiths, from The Smiths Honorable Mentions "Viva Las Vegas"--Dead Kennedys, from Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables. For reasons I don't think I'll entirely understand, I didn't feel comfortable putting a cover song in the top five. Still, one of DK's shining moments, and possibily one of the best covers I've ever heard. "Waitin' for a Superman"--Flaming Lips, from The Soft Bulletin. This is an alternate recording (a demo?) of one of my very favorite songs ever, which appears earlier on the same album. This version is a little rougher around the edges, and that wonderful piano has been replaced by an acoustic guitar. Even the smallest changes can make all the difference, but this is still a fan-frigging-tastic song, regardless.
Guest redbaron51 Report post Posted July 12, 2002 I don't have that many to choose from really...but here I go 1.) Hallowed Be Thy Name: Iron Maiden (Number of the Beast, 1982) Tremendous Song to hear, with the bells and Dickinson's low eerie voice at the beginning. Then in the middle of it all, its just an epic. 2.) We Won't Get Fooled Again: Who (Who's Next, 1971) From beginning to end, this song is best when its Loud, really loud. This is Rock music. 3.) Dyer's Eve: Metallica (...And Justice For All, 1988) Really a truly way to end after a solid CD, and especially a killer instrumental such as To Live Is To Die. Just sheer aggression, which leads me to this... 4.) Metal Militia: Metallica (Kill 'Em All, 1983) Pure solid thrash metal at its finest, just listening to the intro of the song, you knew that this was gonna change music, and hell it almost sounded like early elements of hardcore IMO 5.) Whole Lotta Roise: AC/DC (Let There Be Rock, 1979) Call me crazy, but this easily AC/DC best, loudest, song they have ever recorded, and its a great thing that Bon Scott did it too. Also one of Angus Young best solo too.
