I think it's just funny how the smart-mark elitist attitude is that "I'm a smart mark and my opinions are better than yours."  And then, when people present other opinions, or perhaps offer evidence to refute an opinion that's being pushed a little too far, the "smart mark" gets a little hissy.

Of course, I'm a little guilty of this myself, so I'll try to keep a lid on it.  ;)

Judging by the crowd it's working. And with the threat they're supposed to be, they should be the focal point, as bad as it is for Jericho. But that all improves as he shifts into a program with HH, because with his pull there is no way he'll fall behind.

Good wrestling matches would be nice, but in today's WWF they are not a necessity.  You can have all the 5 star matches you want, but unless there is a buildup or drama involved, they don't mean anything.  A movie can have dazzling special effects, but without storyline or characters you care about, they are meaningless.  Call me a mark, but I enjoy the nWo and the Undertaker.  People piss and moan about their ages and inability to work a match, as if that is anything new.  Could Yokozuna work a match?  No.  But when I was younger and more naive, that did not matter to me.  Not until the invention of the Internet could nerdy wrestling fans get together and complain about their favorite "underpushed" superstars.  It also has given people (smarks) a reason to feel intellectually and culturally superior to other wrestling fans - basically trying to be a wrestling fan while trying to shed the redneck wrestling fan stereotype.  Maybe I'm zany but I like the product for what it is.  There is a good reason why Christian, Edge, and Lance Storm are not main eventing - because the average fan does not care enough about them and with good reason.

Personally, I hate Rock, I hate Hogan, and I hate HHH and RVD. The confrontation between Rock and Hogan was prettyd amn good, but the ambulance bit bored me to tears, although I did laugh when the Geezer Three inspected their handiwork and ran away.

As a whole, I thought the show sucked some major balls at points and was pretty good at others, so I'll say it was decent. I don't want to see Rock/Hogan at all, but it was a damn good way to make people care.

If anybody has a problem with what I just said, fuck it. To quote Stevie B," It's just a fucking ez(icon)board!"

Bernie you hit it right on th ehead there, however Edge, Christian, and Storm all have enough ability for the fans to care eventually.  All three should be getting some type of solid push IMO.

Did anyone here watch the NWO the first time around? Did you mark out like I did when they first came on the scene?

By the end of their run, weren't you screaming for them to get the hell off your screen (More Benoit Dammit!)

I guess I was, but only because WCW didn't know when to end it.  From BATB '96 all the way to Starrcade '97 I was loving it.  Then it became '98 and it didn't end and it split off into two factions including the godawful Sting/Luger/Nash/Savage Wolfpac, and then 'the band is back together'  it was all too much and yes I did want them off my screen.  The logical conclusion of the angle was Sting beating Hogan and the whole NWO basically disintegrating over it.

As long as the angle is booked well and not drawn out to a 3+ year thing I'll want them on my screen ;)

I think the nWo angle should get blown off at Survivor Series. If the angle were to catch fire, then they could blow it off at next years WM.

Yeah. one year at the very most.  And, by the sounds of crowd reactions, Hogan could have one last babyface run after the NWO breakup.. if they wanted to do that.

That would be the fitting end to his career.  A final babyface run in the WWF.

Guest Tony149

What would they do with a babyface Hogan? Have him go back in the red & yellow to have a "Real American" feud with him & Kurt Angle?

"There is a good reason why Christian, Edge, and Lance Storm are not main eventing - because the average fan does not care enough about them and with good reason"

Why should the (below)average fan care about them when the writers and bookers don't care about them. It's not the wrestler's fault, it's the companies. It has been said countless times: the WWF pushes who it wants to regardless of what we think because they train the audience who to care about. The result is a lacklustre product.

Does anyone remember Jericho's heel run in early '98? He was arguably the most-over heel in the company and he was a CRUISERWEIGHT! It only took a five minute segment each week for fans to hate him. In his feud with Dean Malenko, Malenko said one word in four months: home. And when he took off the Ciclope mask, he received the loudest pop of the night in the blowoff match. The midcard can be a valuable asset to the WWF and to me as a fan, but the WWF doesn't care and that's a shame.

Guest The Man in Blak

I don't know if it is as much that the WWF doesn't particularly care as much as it's just the fact that the midcard has to be a little less weighty in terms of storyline just by contrast to the supremely-stacked upper card.  Most people can't handle all-drama, all the time.

Just another reason for the roster split to happen ASAP.

The main event kicked ass. I came home from work just after that nWo ambualnce thing, and got to see HHH and Angle. That was a great match.

I agree. and when they do split, I hope that the NWO and UT and Goldust and Godfather and Kane and Big Show are in one side and there is no crossover. That way I can dedicate myself to one program of non-suck and enjoy WRESTLING.

When WCW recycled nWo everyone ripped them a new ass.

Now when WWF recycles nWo it suddenly becomes "the greatest angle ever".

Ah yes, the double standard strikes again

Exactly. Everything tonight was like a Crash TV greatest hits. Austin's strike (DX did it in 97). Rematch after screwjob ending from PPV (buildup to WM2000). NWO beatdown (nitro 96,97,98). Ambulance chaos (Stone Cold-Bret Hart, Buff Bagwell-Rick Steiner). Austin getting arrested (canadien Stampede, Nash Attica). Christ, people was tonight really a NEW experience for ya'll!!!!! Great interview between Rock-Hogan, but everything else was just a rehash!

I was kind of hoping they would have drawn out the whole "we're not the bad guys" idea a little longer. That would have kicked ass. Actually, it would have been possible had they not smashed up the Rock's ambulance, since they were technically retalliating at No Way Out and on RAW. Austin turned down their beer, the Rock Pearl Harbored the Hulkster.

What bothered me most about the whole Rock/NWO segment was no other wrestler came down to help the Rock. If the NWO is such a poison shouldn't the back be banded together to fight these guys?

The Rock is a prick to everyone so he should be jumped.

I love this thread and I want to cherish it always.

To those who liked the promo: I'm glad to see that some people can't be bitter over EVERYTHING.

To those who think this angle will send the company into further decay: You're actually helping provide the portion to this angle, that these guys will drive away visitors and kill the company.

Although it won't bring more people into wrestling like Austin/McMahon did, the reason for the drop is the people who watched for Austin/McMahon, those who previously never liked wrestling, are moving on to the latest fad, be it reality TV or something else. The NWO won't last forever nor do I think this completely changes the direction of the company. But cmon guys. Back in 1999, ScoopTHIS was publishing humorous fantasy Hogan/Rock matches. Now it's actually happening.

You have to admit it's not as screwed as the Invasion.

Yes, I remember that. When you see Pro-Wrestling T-Shirts in Elder Beerman & J.C. Penny's, something is up..

It was just a fad, and I'm glad to see all the bandwagon jumpers flee..

Well, that's another wrestlemania ruined by the fucking game, I had fucking tears in my eyes when angle won at nwo and i knew it would be too good to hope that they could ya know have a fucking decent main event let alone a legendary one like angle/jericho...NO! HHH JUST HAS TO RUIN IT!!!

I'm tired of this shit, the new nwo are made to look like losers thus destroying any hope of them doing anything interesting and i'm of the opinion that vince mcmahon is a complete fucking idiot if he thinks hhh in his 20th wrestlemania main event is "Catering to the fans!".

BTW Did anyone else notice that in the looooonng rock/nwo segment when rock was waiting for hogan's answer ross suddenly screamed "Just hurry up and say yes and get out of the damn ring!!!" I just marked out like fuck yeah!

That segment went on all fucking night.

Wake me up when benoit returns.

It's his 2nd main event. And Angle/Jericho wouldn't have drew a dime.

Damn! It looks like people can't mark out for something. Has this all been done before? No shit. Everybody knows it's been done before. Nobody ever thought they would see Hogan & Rock face-to-face. But since we're all "smarks" we can't mark out no more before Hogan sucks. Hell, I don't like Hogan, but I will mark out for something I like.

The Rock/Hogan promo was good.  I marked out for the NWO in-ring beatdown on the Rock (especially Scott Hall).

However....

--the parking lot/ambulance stuff was overkill and, quite frankly, boring.

--Hardyz? *yawn*

--we complain when there's a 20-minute promo to start the show, but we got that plus a *2nd* 20-minute promo

Overall, a so-so show, IMO.

Question:

What do people want to see in the first 20 minutes?  When it's a promo (even an awesome one by Jericho) people complain.  When it's a match people complain because their favorite (RVD, Booker, etc.) is "curtain-jerking".  What is the ideal opening segment??

Guest Carbon Tiger

>What is the ideal opening segment??

A good cruiserweight match up to warm up the crowd.

What's up with all this "we've seen all this before" shit? It's wrestling, there are no original ideas left! Everything is a copy of everything! Hell, even the origional NWO was a copy of a New Japan? (I think) angle. Jesus Hector Christ, can't anybody just suspend their disbelief every once in a while?

Well...this thread certainly turned in to a big clusterfuck didn't it?

Rod Stewert?

That pic is of Eric Bischoff.

I'll just go with my opinions sequence by sequence:

Austin calling out the nWo and his subsequent arrest were just there...The whole Austin being taken out for the evening thing left me with a sour taste in my mouth.  It smelled too much like the events preceding the finger poke of doom for me.

Oh boy the Hardyz...at least they faced Storm and Christian, too bad the crowd doesn't give a shit about those two anymore.  Maybe if they had a purpose, or were allowed to talk...what a novel idea.  Anyway, in their near 2 month absence the only thing the Hardyz could come up with that was new was an inverted bulldog and said inverted bulldog combined with a Russian Leg Sweep.  Now that's extreme!  And then the Hardyz cheat to win because they're Eddy Guerrero marks or something.

Nice to know I'm not an idiot Ric, I didn't order the PPV so it's not like I actually paid for that match thing HHH and Angle had last night.

Yay Mr. Perfect is here!  That promo seemed forced as hell though...Here comes Kane for the squash and thatwasn't perfect at all.

Now for the nWo-Rock moments of today's show.  I enjoyed it, yes I did.  Hogan's response to the What chants ("What?"  Cha gonna do?") was a great touch, and the crowd was eating the entire thing up, and for the most part so was I.  You know someone's over when they're still getting cheered when beating the shit out of the Rock.  The Outsider's Edge and Jack Knife Powerbomb looked like Hall and Nash were having trouble getting Rocky up though.  Otherwise, it was a cool little segment.

As for the ambulance deal...this reminds me of that whole nWo silver and black thing where Bret Hart ran over Sid in his monster truck.  Didn't like it then, didn't like it now either.

Booker mercifully took out the Godfather in a match where Lawler and JR helpfully conveyed the seriousness of what just transpired.  Bleh.

I went to the bathroom when Goldust came out, and by the time I came back the match was over.  No opinion, although those carrot sticks I grabbed from the fridge on the way back were damn good.

Once again, I'll state I'm glad I didn't get No Way Out...otherwise I'd be an idiot.  HHH and Angle was a fun little match, and although HHH-Jericho will draw more than Angle-Jericho, I would've greatly preferred the latter.
