Phillip Miller defeated James Zikic by unanimous decision 4. Genki Sudo defeated Leigh Remedios by submission (Rear Naked Choke) - 1:38 Round 2 5. Mark Weir defeated Eugene Jackson by KO - 0:10 Round 1 6. Ian Freeman defeated Frank Mir by TKO - 4:35 Round 1 7. Matt Hughes defeated Carlos Newton by TKO - 3:27 Round 4 I was busy and didn't get to watch the card on PPV. I'm gonna catch the replay. Obviously the thing that jumps out is Mir losing to the mediocre Ian Freeman, and quite convincingly for that matter. He was surely on the fast track to being a main eventer before this loss. Zuffa has to be really disappointed. Apparently Sinosic got beat up bad and was gushing blood everywhere but still never gave up and finished the fight. Very weird, considering how his fight with Tanner was stopped almost as soon as it started due to a tiny cut. And then we have Matt Hughes, who has now taken two of the world's most exciting fighters, Sakurai and Newton, and has managed to beat them in incredibly BORING matches! Again, I'm only going on what I've heard but this was apparently another snorefrest where Hughes smothers his opponent and smooshes them against the cage, eventually winning by GnP. Obviously it works for Hughes, he's incredibly strong, but it's just frustrating. It makes a strong case for removing the cage even though it's the trademark of UFC. Matt Hughes defeated Carlos Newton by TKO - 3:27 Round 4 I live in England and so tonight was my first opportunity to watch a live UFC PPV. I have seen quite a bit of UFC before though. Here are my thoughts (in case you were wondering). Man, Elvis was alive tonight in london, but he almost wasnt. He took a hell of a beating but must be given credit for refusing to quit when asked and finishing the fight. No doubt about the result. Cant remember much about the tanner fight. Miller and zikic looked very inexperienced but pt on a good fight, that the crowd seemed to get into. They both took quite a beating and was an enjoyable bout. genki sudo was very good in this one and dominated from the outset, leigh looked inawe of his opponent and very green in the octagon. The nights only submission. i think this was said to be the quickest victory ever in the UFC. He caught his straightaway with a forearm that knocked himdown and before he could even hit the floor, he had hit sqquare in the face twice more. He then it him three times when he was on thefloor and the ref could not break it up quickly enough. WOW, what a performance. It is unfair to say that the mediocre Ian freeman won tonight. It would be fairer to say that the intelligent, agressive Ian freeman won tonight. As i said i dont get to see UFC or PRIDE that much and so had never seen Mir fight before. He did not look anything like a main eventer. Freeman knew what his offence was going to consist of and countered it superbly. He was too powerful for mir and on this display looked like a much better fighter. Mir had him in a dangerous leglock but freeman did not tap and punched his way out of it to victory. Mir took about 12 very powerful punches to the face in the space of about a minute. A great performance in front of his home fans. I did not se much of the main event as i was at a party and had to be a bit sociable but the people who saw it seemed to enjoy it. As a UFC movice, I enjoyed tyhe show and think it is worht catching the replay, a good performance for there first time in england.
Guest NICKO Report post Posted July 19, 2002 I was there in person, and the event rocked. Highlites were: Genki Sudo....this guy is amazing, before his choke he tried to grab Lee by the feet and pull off a giant swing (he has done this before in Pancrase). Ian Freeman...he owned Mir. I now read that Mir's trainer is stating he didn't train for the fight...how fucking stupid is that? Babalu..far too good for Elvis, but Elvis showed the heart of a true warrior and made it to the end of the fight (and stayed ringside after his fight, shooting photographs) Mark Weir...one word "wow" Matt Hughes...he stays in his game, and thats how he beats fighters...not amazingly exciting, but he does enough. The event was amazing live, and it was cool to meet so many of the fighters. Also we were sat right above Elle McPherson, and spent the time between fights blimping down her top
